Three people are enjoying a rare moment of freedom and liberation at the secluded back gate of the campus. Kevin tugs at his messy black hair, Jack just opened a can of beer, and Lily is lighting a cigarette. In an instant, it seems like this place has become their own little world, far away from the strict rules of the school and the pressures of society.
However, just as they are immersed in this carefree youthful atmosphere, a sharp and rhythmic sound of leather shoes suddenly breaks the tranquility as they hit the floor.
Lily's heart suddenly tightened, her face turned pale in an instant, and she nervously screamed, "It's the instructor!"
Kevin and Jack immediately snapped out of it, their actions faster than their thoughts. Jack quickly threw the beer bottle in his hand behind a bush, while opening a bottle of cherry-scented air freshener, spraying it frantically into the air, hoping to cover up the smell of beer and tobacco.
Lily hurriedly extinguished the cigarette, threw it into another bush, and quickly chewed a piece of gum, trying hard to cover up the smell of tobacco.
Kevin on the other hand, threw the cigarette and beer in his hand into the farthest trash can, then forcefully closed the iron door leading to the back door, letting it return to its original half-open state, pretending that nothing had happened here.
Three people hid on one side of the door, trying to calm their rapid breathing, their ears pressed against the cold, hard metal door, listening to the approaching footsteps. Their heartbeats were about to jump out of their throats, and everyone's tension had reached its peak.
At that moment, the door was gently pushed open.
The instructor walked in, his eyes cold and sharp as an eagle's. In one glance, he swept over every corner and crevice around the back door. He deeply sniffed the air, as if sensing some unusual atmosphere. The corners of his mouth lifted slightly, as if he were ready to speak at any moment.
The three of them felt a tightness in their hearts, as if waiting for an unpredictable storm.
The instructor finally spoke, his voice low and calm: "What are you doing here?"
"Um, we... we are doing cleaning work, instructor," Kevin immediately replied, trying to cover up his nervousness.
The instructor sneered, placing a hand on his waist. "Cleaning duty? How interesting. I don't see any cleaning tools. Are you planning to sweep with your mouths?"
The three of them looked at each other, suddenly feeling like their lies were a poorly written drama, each one worse than the last. The instructor looked satisfied as he observed their embarrassed expressions, pacing back and forth near them.
He walked with his head down, sniffing the air as he went, especially when he got close to Jack and Lily, as if searching for some evidence. "I'll give you one chance. Come clean quickly. Based on your cooperation, I will reduce the punishment," he said.
The three of them felt their hearts pounding, their faces turning even paler. They looked at each other, but no one spoke. Tension and unease filled the air, as if any small movement could trigger a disaster.
Jack's mind was filled with various thoughts, should he admit his fault? Or continue to deny it? He glanced at Lily and Kevin, seeing their equally struggling and uneasy expressions, suddenly feeling like it was all a nightmare.
Lily nervously bit her lower lip, feeling like her heart was about to jump out of her chest. She hoped someone would step forward to break the deadlock, but at the same time, she was afraid that person would be her.
Kevin stood silently on the side, his eyes firm and calm, as if weighing the pros and cons between continuing to lie and being honest. He knew that no matter what they chose to do, this moment would be a turning point in their relationship as a trio.
The instructor stopped in his tracks, turned to face them, and slightly smirked, "Time is running out, make your choice."
Looking at the expressions of the three of them, the instructor could almost be certain that they definitely had something to hide. From the smell in the air, he could already tell that they smoked and drank, not to mention the obvious fact that they skipped class.
The instructor walked over to the bricks next to the back door garden, patted the surface of the bricks with his hand, and then leisurely sat down. He crossed his hands, leaned on the bricks, and once again said to Kevin, Mary, and Alan, "I've said it before, confess quickly. The three of you don't seem to be new to this kind of trick."
The three of them looked at each other uneasily, hesitating on how to respond. Kevin tightly bit his lower lip, trying to control himself from showing any expression. Mary kept fidgeting with the hem of her clothes, clearly very nervous. Alan avoided the instructor's gaze, looking dejected.
The instructor looked at them, knowing full well. "It seems like none of you are willing to speak, so be it. But you need to understand that this kind of behavior will have consequences for your future. I will report this to the school, and there will be corresponding punishment."
After speaking, the instructor stood up, patted his pants, and then leisurely turned around as if preparing to leave the suffocating place. At this critical moment, Jack suddenly raised his hand and said in a noticeably feigned nervous tone, "Instructor, I have something to say. Actually, it's Kevin who has been smoking and drinking, and he even pressured me and Lily to join in."
Lily immediately took over, as if premeditated, and put on an innocent face, showing a victimized look, "Yes, instructor. Kevin not only pressured us, but also threatened to spread rumors at school to ruin our reputation if we didn't agree with him."
Kevin was shocked, he simply couldn't believe his ears. From his perspective, all of this was Jack's idea, and now Jack was cunningly turning the tables.
"What are you guys talking about?!" Kevin retorted angrily. "Jack, you were the one who willingly brought out the cigarettes and alcohol, and even said 'Let's have some excitement, it's much more fun!'"
Jack remained unmoved, just sneering. He took out his phone and skillfully scrolled through it, finally stopping at a photo. He handed the phone to the instructor and said, "Instructor, take a look at this." In the photo, Kevin was smiling, holding a beer and a cigarette.
The instructor took the phone, carefully examined the photo, and then turned his gaze to Kevin. "This doesn't look like someone being forced," he said.
Kevin felt a wave of despair. This photo almost certainly sealed his fate, even though it wasn't the truth. A chill ran up from the soles of his feet to his head.
"Kevin, I hope you understand that this kind of behavior is not tolerated at school. I will have to report this to the school authorities, and there will be consequences," the instructor's tone was calm and resolute, as if they had already seen through everything.
Kevin glanced at Jack and Lily, their faces revealing almost undisguisable smirks. In that moment, Kevin deeply realized that in this world full of lies and hypocrisy, trustworthy people were few and far between. He felt a chill, as if he had been deeply betrayed.
