After walking for a long time through winding paths, Li Hong was thrown onto the ground again.
This was a stone chamber. The floor was uneven, and along the walls were five or six ancient-looking stone tables, each with a delicate, semi-transparent White Jade Box about two feet wide. Strange red and green lights emanated from the Jade Boxes.
The Spirit Stone Taoist sighed, "This is a forbidden area of our sect. Being able to enter here is your fortune; now it depends on whether you have any luck." He shouted, "Close your eyes and sit cross-legged! Do whatever I tell you!"
With a fierce look in his eyes, the old Taoist made Li Hong comply, and he obediently sat cross-legged and closed his eyes as instructed.
A whirlwind began to rise in front of him, and the wind grew stronger. The old Taoist's robes rustled loudly. An invisible pressure nearly suffocated Li Hong. Out of curiosity, he quietly opened his eyes a tiny slit.
The Spirit Stone Taoist walked step by step across the clearing in the stone chamber, each step seeming to weigh a thousand pounds. Upon closer inspection, his steps were very rhythmic, as if he were drawing some peculiar pattern. At the same time, his hands formed various strange hand seals in front of his chest, pointing at the Jade Boxes placed along the walls.
One by one, the Jade Boxes flew off their tables and into the air. The red and green lights grew brighter, illuminating the entire stone chamber with intertwining colors that created an otherworldly spectacle, casting an indescribably bizarre glow on the old Taoist's gaunt face.
He appeared to be straining; his steps became slower and more labored, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
Li Hong was utterly puzzled by the old Taoist's actions but watched with great interest, not even realizing that his eyes had widened in surprise.
Suddenly, the old Taoist shot a glare at Li Hong like a knife. Seeing him looking intrigued, he shouted angrily, "Close your eyes and don’t peek!"
Li Hong quickly shut his eyes again.
"Relax! Don't think about anything!"
The sound of wind filled the stone chamber, resonating deeply within him. Sitting directly on the cold stone floor for too long made Li Hong's bottom increasingly chilly. Unable to resist, he subtly shifted his position while mustering up courage to open his right eye just a little bit. Upon doing so, he was immediately startled.
In front of him floated five or six scrolls, some emitting red light while others glowed green, rising and falling in mid-air.
The old Taoist was sweating profusely; his clothes were soaked through. Whenever one of the scrolls began to sink, he would point at it with his finger. It seemed as if an invisible thread connected his fingertip to each scroll; wherever he pointed, that scroll would rise again. However, his fingers trembled slightly as if they bore an immense weight on his wrists, making it look exceedingly difficult for him.
It turned out that the old Taoist had used his power to move the scroll in front of Li Hong.
Suddenly, the old Taoist squeezed out with difficulty, "Kid, don't just stare with your eyes. Tell me, do you have any special feelings?"
Li Hong's heart sank; was this also a test? The truth was he didn't feel anything special at all, which...
"That's it, that's it! It turns out you really are useless. I wasted my efforts for nothing," the old Taoist said with great disappointment. After thinking for a moment, he still refused to give up and laboriously brought another scroll in front of Li Hong. "Last chance! Focus and feel!"
This scroll glowed with a bright red light, as if fire were burning from within, revealing four hollow ancient characters in fiery color—Li Fire Scripture.
This was the name mentioned by the female voice earlier. Could it be that all these scrolls contained the celestial arts of the Nine Li Sect? And this "Li Fire Scripture" was the most powerful among them?
Li Hong quickly closed his eyes to find the so-called feeling. After waiting for a long time, his mind felt empty; the "Li Fire Scripture" in front of him seemed to not exist at all. If looking for a special feeling counted as a special feeling, would that be considered one? Li Hong hesitantly spoke.
The old Taoist nearly spat blood upon hearing this, his face turning red. With a wave of his hand, all the scrolls flew back into the Jade Box they originally came from. He grabbed Li Hong and scolded, "Useless! You can't desecrate our sacred objects!" He cursed while dragging Li Hong like a small chicken through the door and out.
The female cultivator was quietly sitting cross-legged at the entrance, her brows lowered, her face calm and unruffled.
The old Taoist set down Li Hong in disappointment and said, "It's no good; this kid is a natural waste. Our sect doesn't have any techniques suitable for him."
The female cultivator remained noncommittal, her deep black eyes gazing at Li Hong with an inscrutable calmness.
Li Hong's heart had already sunk to the bottom, but now it gradually ignited with hope.
After a while, the female cultivator asked, "Are you sure?"
The Spirit Stone Taoist replied, "I am very sure. The 'Li Fire Scripture' has been in front of him the longest without any response. Master Uncle, you know well that the Azure Oil Temple in Lüliang is one of our Nine Li Sect's exits to the Heaven and Earth Platform. Every year countless Li Fire Aura flows into the mountains; many children there are suitable for cultivating 'Li Fire Scripture,' yet this kid is an anomaly! The strangest part is that back in Lüliang I clearly sensed he had Li Fire Aura within him! But after coming in here, it disappeared! I really don't know what happened."
"Did you forget about the Six Spirit Salty Ritual?" the Female Cultivator asked lightly.
"Ah?" The old Taoist's mouth formed a silent circle.
"It has been three thousand years since anyone could practice the Six Spirit Salty Ritual. Perhaps he can give it a try." The Female Cultivator's gaze fell on Li Hong, thoughtful.
Li Hong felt his heart racing.
********
A tattered scroll lay before Li Hong. Compared to the previous shimmering scrolls, it looked like something pulled from a garbage heap—yellowed, old, and covered in cracks, seemingly unable to be unfurled.
The Spirit Stone Taoist had little hope left and frowned. "I don't believe you can sense anything, but fine, I'll give you one last chance." He stepped onto the Heavenly Gang Steps and pointed at the scroll again.
The scroll remained motionless.
The old Taoist was too lazy to try again and said, "I'll go talk to Master Uncle and see if there are any other methods." He shook his head and left the stone chamber, not even bothering to take the scroll with him.
Only Li Hong remained in the stone chamber, where all he could hear was his own heavy breathing. He was extremely disappointed, facing a Treasure Mountain yet finding no way in.
It felt as if a fire was burning in his chest. He reached out toward the scroll, shouting inwardly, "I can do this! I will succeed!"
His trembling fingers touched the scroll, and a slight warmth surged through his fingertips, something quickly reaching deep into his heart.
Suddenly, the scroll began to glow. A beam of golden light shone from within it, growing brighter and more dazzling. Li Hong squinted against the brightness, rubbed his eyes, and looked up again, utterly stunned, hardly believing what he saw.
Suspended in mid-air before him was a radiant golden scripture! It was no longer that tattered scroll from before!
