Li Hong was called to the backyard. There were also Bear Kid and dozens of other youths. The Daoist temple had already lost many people, and it was clear they had been eliminated. Zhao Xuan was not among the crowd.
After coming down from the cliff that day, he had not found Zhao Xuan's body, nor even a trace of blood. This left Li Hong feeling uneasy. To be honest, he did not want Zhao Xuan to die, but if faced with the same situation again, he would not regret his decision—if he had to choose between becoming a celestial apprentice or saving Bear Kid's life, he would still choose to save Bear Kid without hesitation.
Now it seemed that there were no severe consequences. Li Hong quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
The old Daoist took out a key and unlocked the door in front of them, then turned back to invite them inside.
It was that haunted house.
As Li Hong stepped inside, he couldn't help but feel anxious. Looking up, he was stunned. This was not the same house, or rather, it had changed beyond recognition.
The front half of the house appeared normal; however, all the furniture was missing, replaced by a clearing. The back half was filled with thick crimson mist that seemed to materialize out of nowhere. This mist had substance and shape, resembling a large round tent, obscuring whatever lay within.
"Now I announce that you have passed the test and officially joined our Nine Li Sect!" the Spirit Stone Taoist said with a grin.
Li Hong was both surprised and delighted. Before he could ask any questions, a strong force pushed him forward, and he found himself tumbling into the red mist.
Everything spun around him as if he had fallen into an endless pit, continuously rotating downward. Stars danced before his eyes; his Divine Consciousness became hazy. Just when he felt he could no longer hold on, he landed with a thud on a hard floor.
Immediately, someone threw him over their shoulder; the rush of wind filled his ears as he felt strangely weightless. He tried to open his eyes but couldn’t manage it. After a while, the wind ceased, and the person casually tossed him onto the ground like a sack before leaving.
The place was very quiet. Li Hong struggled to open his eyes just a crack and first saw many golden little stars. His vision was blurry but gradually cleared up, causing him to shudder in fear.
Before him stood an extremely tall figure!
This person was at least three meters high. They wore a Crimson High Crown and an exceptionally long scarlet robe. Their long face bore no expression; their skin remained motionless while their deep-set eyes sparkled with an eerie light as they fixed their gaze on Li Hong.
Li Hong was so frightened that he rolled over and got up with a thud—he had bumped into a tall stone chair. Rubbing his head cautiously, he asked, "Esteemed... esteemed senior, may I ask where this is?"
The tall figure stared at Li Hong without saying a word. A gust of wind blew from somewhere; the person's scarlet robe fluttered dramatically as they revealed something held in their hands.
It was a strange flame burning fiercely.
Li Hong's scalp tingled in fear as he turned to run. Only then did he realize he was in a vast and deep hall. The floor was black and translucent, extremely smooth, reflecting shadows. Looking up revealed no ceiling; it was far above him.
In the distance, there was a large square of bright light. He dared not look back and quickly ran toward the light.
As soon as Li Hong crossed the threshold, he suddenly stopped, unable to blink.
This was no longer the Lüliang Mountains. It was a vast and beautiful unfamiliar mountain range. Countless peaks connected one after another, stretching all the way to the distant horizon beyond sight. Some were steep and majestic, towering into the sky, while others were exquisitely beautiful, resembling goddesses. A light milky mist curled around the mountains, with clear springs and waterfalls cascading over strange rocks. Everywhere he looked was a picturesque scene, with exotic flowers and rare herbs growing abundantly, subtly revealing numerous pavilions and towers hidden among the mountains.
Before he could take it all in, his gaze was immediately drawn to an extraordinarily magnificent strange platform on the summit.
The platform was incredibly grand and imposing, as if it stood between heaven and earth. It was entirely carved from warm, dazzling, pure white jade essence. Surrounding the platform were eight massive Coiling Dragon Pillars, with dragons sculpted on them that seemed alive, clawing and writhing as if they were still circling around the pillars. The base of the platform was covered in strange patterns, and even the surface of the platform had many engravings that vaguely formed a Bagua symbol. However, this Bagua symbol was quite different from what Li Hong recognized.
On the steps leading up to the platform stood many people. They wore identical simple and clean white silk robes, their hair tied neatly in topknots. The mountain breeze blew gently, making their garments flutter like immortals, yet they remained completely still, resembling clay sculptures or wooden carvings.
At that moment, a strong red light flashed from the platform. After the red light faded, a figure suddenly appeared on the empty surface of the platform.
This person wore a black and white silk feather robe and a black ancient high crown. As the mountain breeze blew, his wide sleeves billowed gracefully, giving him an ethereal presence and extraordinary demeanor. He lightly stepped forward and floated effortlessly into the air, hovering two zhang above the ground while facing the main hall.
Li Hong suddenly felt a strange sensation—this person was staring at him.
He quickly shrank back. It was too late; he saw that person move swiftly like a galloping horse or a shooting star, growing larger as he approached directly toward him. In the blink of an eye, he had stopped right in front of him.
It turned out to be the Spirit Stone Taoist. Dressed in this strange attire, the old man exuded an aura of immortality and nobility that made him seem like a completely different person from his usual disheveled appearance.
He stroked his beard and stared at Li Hong: "You brat managed to stand after passing through the Heaven and Earth Platform?"
Li Hong was baffled and did not understand what he meant. He recalled the tall figure behind him and quickly turned to look back.
In the dim depths of the hall, that fire-red robe remained strikingly noticeable. From afar, it seemed that the "high person" stood still; however, his bright eyes appeared much dimmer now, reflecting only a faint hint of black.
Only then did Li Hong realize that this "high person" was actually an extremely lifelike statue. Especially in regard to its eyes—whatever precious material had been used created an illusion that made it seem as if "he was staring at you" when viewed from close range.
But what about that flame held close to its chest?
The Spirit Stone Taoist continued to scrutinize Li Hong while muttering something under his breath with increasing furrowed brows.
Seeing his expression, Li Hong felt uneasy and asked nervously: "Why is Daoist Master like this?"
The Spirit Stone Taoist chuckled dryly twice, revealing a somewhat uneven set of yellow teeth before suddenly reaching out with his gnarled hand.
Li Hong had nowhere to escape; he was grabbed like a small chicken and lifted off the ground, soaring straight into the blue sky.
The ground quickly receded, and Li Hong felt darkness closing in, with a buzzing sound ringing in his ears.
A strong wind hit him, making it impossible to open his eyes. Before long, he suddenly felt his body drop heavily as the old Taoist grabbed his neck and plunged toward the ground. Li Hong had a breath caught in his throat, and before he could shout out, he crashed into the earth with a thud like a stone.
His stomach churned violently, and Li Hong lay on the ground, unable to move.
Voices reached his ears.
A female voice said, "Are you joking with me, disciple? Since you can't determine whether his constitution is suitable for the Li Fire Scripture, why did you take him in?"
The Spirit Stone Taoist's voice sounded very serious: "Master Uncle, it's precisely because I can't figure it out that I came to find you. I discovered this kid on Mount Lüliang; you know there's no way this should be possible. Besides, this kid has decent talent; it would be a shame to give up on him. Master Uncle, please make an exception just this once."
After a long pause, the female voice replied, "Fine, fine. I'll make an exception this once. You can take him inside."
"Thank you, Master Uncle."
A large hand lifted Li Hong up.
