In the Four Great Empires, the southern Celestial Moon Empire is home to a prestigious large Sect known as the Beastmaster Sect. This Sect ranks among the top three in the Celestial Moon Empire, and its disciples possess exceptional skills in taming and raising beasts.
The art of beast taming has a long history, as the strength of demon beasts is considerable. If one can tame them for their own use, it can provide significant assistance. Many sects have established similar beast taming halls to raise demon beasts. However, compared to the Beastmaster Sect, which is renowned for its beast taming skills, these other sects are clearly on a different level.
Moreover, what truly makes the Beastmaster Sect famous is not only its beast taming abilities but also its unique Slave Insect Technique. The insect-rearing hall within the Sect is specifically responsible for breeding and controlling slave insects.
Beast taming and slave insects may appear somewhat similar on the surface, but they are entirely different. The Slave Insect Technique has long been lost, and the Beastmaster Sect was fortunate enough to obtain a fragment of this technique from an Ancient Ruins, allowing them to grasp part of the Slave Insect methods.
The Devouring Beetle is a chilling and mysterious Demon Insect raised by the Beastmaster Sect. This Demon Insect not only possesses formidable defensive capabilities but can even withstand attacks from ordinary Xuan-level weapons.
Ye Feng furrowed his brow, his expression shifting between uncertainty and concern.
In some materials collected by the Dragon Tiger Sect and Treasure Pavilion, descriptions of the eastern Four Great Empires are not very detailed. The Beastmaster Sect is one of the more low-profile and mysterious Sects among the dozens of large Sects in the Four Great Empires. Ye Feng had only occasionally come across brief mentions of the Devouring Beetle in an old document.
However, Ye Feng also understood that if the Gray-Shelled Beetle before him was indeed a Devouring Beetle, then Tianyi Daoist's true identity would be revealed.
"The Beastmaster Sect? How could it possibly come all the way to the Northern Frontier Five Nations from the Celestial Moon Empire? That seems rather strange," Ye Feng shook his head. Now was not the time to ponder this question; he was experiencing significant depletion of Vital Energy. After consuming the Vital Energy from his Vitality Shield, the Devouring Beetle had noticeably grown larger, and its speed in devouring the shield had increased. Even with Gathering Essence Pills to replenish his Vital Energy, it was difficult to make up for what he had lost.
Ye Feng attempted to employ other methods and used his unrefined Blazing Palm technique.
Blazing Palm originates from a low-level introductory palm technique in the Separation of Fire Technique. Its power is average, but Ye Feng wanted to try it out to see if the Fire Elemental Energy, known for its effectiveness against poisonous insects, could counteract the Devouring Beetle before him.
Ye Feng channeled his remaining Fire Elemental Energy into his hands and unleashed it with a palm strike. Flames surged from his palms as he struck several Gray-Shelled Beetles closest to him.
"Chirp!" The beetles hit by Blazing Palm were directly sent flying by Ye Feng's powerful palm strike. Their gray shells turned bright red under the high temperature of the Fire Elemental Energy, resembling glowing iron blocks.
"Did it work?" Ye Feng felt a surge of joy in his heart and was about to replicate his attack on other beetles when he noticed that those Gray-Shelled Beetles that had fallen to the ground were actually flipping over and crawling back up again. His expression changed dramatically.
Although their shells had turned red from being scorched by Fire Elemental Energy, it seemed that the Devouring Beetles beneath their shells were unaffected. Just moments later, they scurried back toward Ye Feng.
"Blazing Palm won't work; let's try Golden Light Fist!" Ye Feng's face contorted as an unnamed dark fire surged within him!
"Boom!" Golden light erupted as Ye Feng struck out with both fists again, sending more than ten Gray-Shelled Beetles flying once more.
As usual, although he was able to successfully knock the beetles away, he couldn't inflict any damage at all.
In a fit of rage, Ye Feng nearly unleashed all the basic martial techniques he had mastered, but the result left him utterly disheartened.
Because he forced himself to use martial techniques, the Vital Energy within Ye Feng was nearly depleted, causing his protective Vitality Shield to almost collapse. Fortunately, he managed to swallow a few Gathering Essence Pills in time, barely stabilizing the faltering Vitality Shield!
Ye Feng was at his wit's end and, in desperation, casually formed a spell gesture.
If Vital Energy wouldn't work, then let's try Spirit Energy.
Fortunately, his cultivation in the Immortal Path had already reached Refining Qi Threefold Vigilance, which could be considered the peak of early-stage Qi Refinement. He could still manage to cast the most basic Fireball technique.
After a series of finger movements, a silver glow emanated from Ye Feng's hands. After several attempts, he finally succeeded in casting the Fireball technique he was most familiar with. Sparks gathered in his palm under the rapid vibrations of Spirit Energy, slowly condensing into a fist-sized Spiritual Fireball.
The fireball formed from gathered Spirit Energy had a fundamentally different nature from Fire Elemental Energy; its temperature was at least several levels lower. Even though it was only the size of a fist, Ye Feng could already feel the surrounding temperature noticeably rising.
The appearance of the fireball also attracted the attention of the Gray-Shelled Beetles that were continuously gnawing at his Vitality Shield.
They instinctively halted their biting actions and suddenly became dazed.
"Could this thing actually be useful?" Ye Feng's heart trembled with excitement.
"I don't have much Spirit Energy left; I can only cast the Fireball technique three times at most. Even if the Spiritual Fireball can harm these beetles, it would be difficult to eliminate them all!"
Ye Feng did not attempt to throw the Spiritual Fireball directly; instead, he suddenly extended his right hand holding the fireball forward!
"Squeak squeak!!" Before the Gray-Shelled Beetles could be hit by the Spiritual Fireball, they let out strange cries and quickly scattered away, crawling off from Ye Feng's Vitality Shield.
"Haha, it really works!" Ye Feng was overjoyed. With his left hand now free, he formed another spell gesture to condense another Spiritual Fireball!
With two fireballs in hand, the surrounding temperature became increasingly unbearable. The Gray-Shelled Beetles clinging tightly to his Vitality Shield seemed unable to endure any longer and finally dispersed. Fortunately, since these Spiritual Fireballs were cast by Ye Feng himself, they were protected by the aura of Spirit Energy, so their high temperature did not significantly affect him.
The densely packed Gray-Shelled Beetles retreated about three steps but remained unwilling to leave, making a series of eerie chirping sounds that sent chills down one's spine.
"There is a relatively narrow cave ahead. As long as I sprinkle Spiritual Fire at the entrance, these beetles will surely not dare to chase after me recklessly!"
Ye Feng scanned his surroundings and noticed three cave entrances in an open area several dozen feet away, seemingly leading in three different directions.
Now there was no room for choice. Although he could successfully disperse the Gray-Shelled Beetles by holding the Spiritual Fireball in his hand, it would also consume a significant amount of his spiritual energy. The journey out of the cave was too far, and his Spiritual Fireball would not last until he escaped. These Gray-Shelled Beetles clearly would not let him go so easily.
He could only brace himself and venture deeper!
Ye Feng took off, suddenly activating Wind Treading Step, transforming into a gust of wind as he rushed toward the narrowest fork in the cave.
The Gray-Shelled Beetles did not give up. As Ye Feng suddenly dashed away, all the Gray-Shelled Beetles trembled simultaneously, their gray-black shells splitting open from the middle to reveal a pair of transparent wings. They took off into the air, charging after Ye Feng one after another.
"These guys actually have wings!" Ye Feng was momentarily stunned. Fortunately, his Wind Treading Step was fast enough; in an instant, he reached the cave entrance. With a push of his feet, he leaped out, diving into an opening that was only about half a foot high.
"Go!" Almost as soon as he landed, Ye Feng flicked his hands, sending two Spiritual Fireballs toward the upper and lower parts of the cave entrance.
With a bang, the Spiritual Fireballs exploded, forming two walls of fire that completely enveloped the entrance.
A group of Gray-Shelled Beetles that charged too quickly could not stop in time and leaped directly into the firewalls.
The seemingly indestructible Gray-Shelled Beetles were engulfed by the Spiritual Fire and turned to ashes. The thousands of beetles that followed came to a halt, screeching at the firewalls blocking their path.
Having witnessed the terror of Spiritual Fire, they naturally dared not recklessly leap into the flames and could only slowly descend from the air, anxiously crawling around outside the cave entrance.
After all, this was just a makeshift firewall and not a true firewall technique; thus, the spiritual energy within the Spiritual Fire would dissipate quickly. Once that happened, the firewall constructed by Spiritual Fire would vanish immediately. Ye Feng did not dare to pause for even a moment; he hurriedly fled deeper into the cave.
Fortunately, although the entrance was small, there was ample space inside for Ye Feng to utilize Wind Treading Step. He took advantage of this to distance himself from the Gray-Shelled Beetles before the Spiritual Fire disappeared.
After running for a full hour and confirming that the Gray-Shelled Beetles had not followed him, Ye Feng finally breathed a sigh of relief and stopped to survey his surroundings.
The mysterious Restriction of Soul Thought seems to have disappeared, allowing Ye Feng's Soul Thought to successfully detach and extend hundreds of feet away, giving him a rough understanding of the surrounding situation.
Ye Feng was surprised to discover that the place where Tianyi Daoist resided was actually a vast network of interconnected caves. From the first fork in the path, each cave Passage began to branch out into numerous paths, leading in different directions.
One of the cave Passages delved deep underground, appearing mysterious and eerie. This Passage was also set with Restrictions, making it difficult for Soul Thought to probe further, so Ye Feng decided to abandon it.
The Passage he was in led straight west. Although there were no Restrictions limiting him, Ye Feng's Soul Thought was fully extended, yet he still did not find an end to the Passage.
“To reach other Passages, I must return to the open area occupied by the Gray-Shelled Beetles. It seems I can only go all the way down this path!” Ye Feng dared not provoke those beetles again. The spiritual energy within him was only enough to cast Fireball once; if he were entangled by the Gray-Shelled Beetles, escaping would not be as easy as last time.
Ye Feng held his breath and focused, confirming that there were no dangers ahead before swiftly moving deeper into the Passage.
After running for a while, as time passed, Ye Feng finally sensed something unusual ahead after running for four full hours.
The Passage in the cave was pitch black; even a slight glimmer of light would appear strikingly out of place. The flickering flames ahead prompted Ye Feng to stop in his tracks.
“Why is there firelight? Am I nearing an exit?” To conserve spiritual energy, Ye Feng had not kept his Soul Thought active during his sprint. The sudden change now compelled him to quickly activate it.
Just as he summoned his Soul Thought without having time to investigate the situation ahead, Ye Feng heard a series of calls echoing in his ears.
