After getting the cigarettes, Mo Ming went to the lounge, planning to spend the boring night there, smoking a little. Through the window of the lounge, he could see the moon hanging high in the sky, its bright light spilling over the earth like water.
Surrounded by smoke, Mo Ming found himself enveloped in mist, quietly gazing at the bright moon, unsure of where his feelings were directed or where they would end.
Soon, it seemed that Mo Ming noticed something and gave a bitter smile while shaking his head.
"Director Lin, have you really gotten so bored that you need to spy on me?" Mo Ming turned to look at the door and just caught sight of a figure retreating. He added, "Come out; if someone sees you, they'll misunderstand and think you're some kind of peeping tom."
In fact, Mo Ming had noticed Lin Yuan'er as soon as she arrived; he just didn't want to mention it, thinking she would leave after watching for a while. Little did he know that after smoking three cigarettes, Lin Yuan'er still hadn't left, which prompted him to speak up.
After a long moment, the figure hiding by the wall slowly stepped out. The lounge was dimly lit, but with the faint moonlight, Mo Ming could clearly see that it was indeed Lin Yuan'er.
"Brother Mo, you're really impressive; I didn't make a sound and yet you noticed me!" Lin Yuan'er said with her hands clasped in front of her and a slight smile. "I don't have any work tonight; can I... stay by your side?"
"This place is filled with smoke; I'm afraid you won't be used to it. It's better if you don't," Mo Ming replied with a wry smile. "If your health suffers later on, I can imagine the old man would shoot me on sight, and I would feel uneasy inside as well."
"It's fine; I've gotten used to it," Lin Yuan'er shook her head and said. "For Brother Mo, I have to get used to many things, including the smell of cigarettes. I'm fine now."
As she spoke, Lin Yuan'er walked over to Mo Ming's side. There was only a box to sit on; there was nothing else available. Without hesitation, she elegantly sat down.
Ah...
However, the box was too soft. As soon as Lin Yuan'er sat down, her body sank into it, causing her to involuntarily let out a loud scream that echoed throughout the floor.
Just as Lin Yuan'er felt startled and frightened, Mo Ming quickly bit down on his cigarette butt. With one hand supporting her back and the other grabbing her hand, he pulled firmly, helping Lin Yuan'er stand up.
Lin Yuan'er adjusted her disheveled hair and still looked a bit shaken.
"Are you okay?" Mo Ming took a puff of his cigarette and said, "Be more careful next time; don’t be so careless. How could an empty box possibly support someone? The box I sit on is filled with printing paper inside; naturally, it can hold my weight."
Mo Ming felt a bit guilty about this, as he suddenly forgot that it was an empty box and neglected to remind Lin Yuan'er.
"It's nothing, I think it's not bad this way," Lin Yuan'er said with a slight smile. "At least in this situation, I can feel Brother Mo's concern and experience that long-lost sense of security from him. I really hope more things like this can happen in the future."
Upon hearing this, Mo Ming was stunned. Was Lin Yuan'er out of her mind?
Who would wish to constantly encounter dangerous situations? However, what Mo Ming didn't know was that Lin Yuan'er loved him because of an incident that happened when they were young.
At that time, both Mo Ming and Lin Yuan'er were seven years old. While they were playing in the woods, Lin Yuan'er accidentally fell into a well. If it weren't for Mo Ming's quick reflexes in reaching out to grab her, Lin Yuan'er might have met a tragic end, as it was an empty well and very deep. Falling in could either lead to being crushed or becoming disabled.
Mo Ming held onto the terrified Lin Yuan'er, who was already crying, with one hand while grabbing onto a rock that was sticking out of the ground with the other. He comforted her softly for a moment before shouting for help. In this way, Mo Ming managed to hold on for an entire hour.
When the adults finally discovered them and rushed over, Mo Ming's consciousness had already begun to fade. Yet, he still tightly held onto Lin Yuan'er. Fortunately, both of them were rescued in the end; however, Mo Ming's hand had suffered severe dislocation. His father found the best doctor to treat him, and after two years of recovery, he finally healed.
However, Mo Ming was left with a lingering ailment; whenever it rained, his hand would ache as if he had rheumatism. He consulted many doctors but found no solution.
It was during that time that Lin Yuan'er developed a sense of dependence on him.
"Mo Ming, Yuan'er, what are you two doing here?"
While Mo Ming was still in a daze, Murong Lian's voice came from outside the door. He snapped out of his thoughts and looked outside to find a crowd gathered at the door, with Murong Lian standing at the front, arms crossed and staring at them.
"Sister Lian, we're fine; we were just chatting," Lin Yuan'er said shyly upon seeing so many people arrive. "I almost tripped just now and shouted out in fear. I'm sorry for interrupting your work."
Among the crowd, Qiu Lan snorted coldly, feeling somewhat uncomfortable and unable to hold back her words: "Hmph! What could you possibly be discussing in such a dark place? There must be something wrong; how could someone so big fall so easily?"
After Qiu Lan said this, those outside began to whisper among themselves. Li Minghan even raised his voice to ensure everyone heard: "Maybe Mo's bodyguard thinks Director Lin is too beautiful and couldn't help but make trouble? Tsk tsk! How could I be so blind not to see you're such a scoundrel?"
"Enough!" Mo Ming's temper flared as he angrily retorted. "You can say whatever you want about me; after all, your mouths are yours to use as you please. Just don't go too far. Director Lin is a girl who can't withstand your gossip. I hope you stop saying such things; otherwise, I'll make sure you never speak again."
Mo Ming's voice was cold, and those around him fell silent, seemingly convinced that Mo Ming could indeed do such a thing. This was the first time Murong Lian had seen Mo Ming lose his temper; at least before, in the Leisurely Cafe, he hadn't reacted when others criticized him.
Murong Lian quickly turned around and said in a stern tone, "What time is it now? Are you still in the mood to gossip? Hurry back to work! If we can't finalize the ideas tonight, everyone will be fired tomorrow."
Hearing Murong Lian's words, the group dared not speak further and quietly returned to their tasks.
"Alright, you all haven't eaten anything tonight. Let's go out and eat; KFC has delivered food." Murong Lian glanced at Mo Ming and Lin Yuan'er, smiled, and then left.
"I'm sorry, Brother Mo. It's all my fault for causing you to be misunderstood." Lin Yuan'er looked a bit guilty. By the time she said this, Mo Ming's anger had already dissipated. He smiled and shook his head, saying, "It's just a misunderstanding. I don't blame you. Besides, didn't you also cause some misunderstandings? It's fine; if you're upright, you don't need to fear shadows. Just don't pay too much attention to what others say."
"Of course I don't mind. After all, we are..." Lin Yuan'er seemed to think of something and quickly corrected herself, "Good friends! Alright, I think Brother Mo must be hungry too. Let's go out and grab something to eat."
Although Lin Yuan'er seemed to be asking for Mo Ming's opinion, she didn't give him a choice. She walked behind him and pushed him forward. Mo Ming smiled wryly and said, "Okay, no need to push me; I can walk on my own."
After finishing KFC, Mo Ming didn't go to the lounge to smoke but sat at his seat playing games. Occasionally, he felt hostility directed at him from various directions. He felt a bit innocent since Lin Yuan'er was sitting far away quietly watching him.
Thanks to the efforts of all employees, three ideas were finalized just before one o'clock. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief; they had finally completed their work. Murong Lian quickly reviewed everyone's results and nodded in approval.
"Our work has been successfully completed. As long as we get approval from Ultimate Advertising Company tomorrow, we can start turning our ideas into reality immediately. Thank you all for your hard work tonight; I have seen your efforts," Murong Lian paused before continuing, "To motivate you for future work, I have good news: Tomorrow night at Dream Night Club, we won't stop until we're drunk!"
"President Mu is amazing! We will definitely work hard in the future—for Starry Melody and for President Mu!" Everyone cheered up almost instantly; the once quiet building became lively as they praised Murong Lian.
"Alright, it's getting late. Everyone hurry back to rest. Remember to be on time for work tomorrow; don't be late," Murong Lian said quickly as he wasn't fond of flattery.
Everyone understood and closed their mouths, packing up their things to leave. Qiu Lan shot a resentful glance at Mo Ming before leaving in a huff without looking back. In the end, only Mo Ming, Murong Lian, and Lin Yuan'er remained.
"Yuan'er, where are you staying now? I'll have Mo Ming take you home," Murong Lian said to Lin Yuan'er, the great contributor. "We haven't had enough time to chat today; let's talk more once we're in the car."
Lin Yuan'er naturally would not refuse the opportunity to spend more time with Mo Ming, and she happily said, "Sure, sure! I also want to have a good chat with Sister Lian, so I'll leave it to you, Brother Mo."
Although Mo Ming felt a bit frustrated inside, he still smiled on the surface.
Lin Yuan'er did not stay in a hotel but lived at her Uncle's house, which happened to be on the same road as Murong Wei's Hillside Mansion. This saved quite a bit of time. Along the way, Lin Yuan'er and Murong Lian chatted non-stop, mostly about women's topics, while Mo Ming could only listen quietly and occasionally respond to Lin Yuan'er's questions.
When they arrived in front of Lin Yuan'er's Uncle's house, she got out of the car and greeted them. Just as she was about to turn around and go inside, a female voice called out from not far away.
"Cousin!"
Mo Ming's heart skipped a beat as he quickly turned his head toward the source of the voice. To his dismay, he encountered a nightmare from his past; the person was none other than Fu Qingyun, who had made him flee in embarrassment from Forget-Me-Not Bar!
Taking advantage of the fact that Fu Qingyun had not noticed him yet, Mo Ming tried to start the car and escape. However, Fu Qingyun spotted him just in time.
"Damn it, that man! Stop right there!"
But what did it matter if she noticed? Mo Ming didn't care about her words; he stepped on the gas and drove away quickly. Once again, Fu Qingyun was unable to catch up as Mo Ming sped off into the distance.
