Feng Ning recalled, with a hint of sarcasm, that wasn't it just something I said to annoy you?
"Alright, I admit it," she said.
Feng Ning felt nothing wrong about it and cheerfully added, "But that doesn't stop me from liking someone else!"
Jiang Wen perked up, waiting for her to continue, only to be met with this. His expression darkened like Black as Coal. "You can actually say such frivolous things."
They went up to the second floor, where Jiang Wen grabbed a thin sweater from his room. The two of them headed to Jiang Yuru's bedroom. She had just woken up, and Jiang Wen bent down to help his sister put on her clothes one piece at a time.
The little sister had difficulty moving, so Jiang Wen personally carried her to the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face.
Feng Ning rarely saw him being this gentle and found it quite refreshing.
Jiang Yuru had delicate, fair skin that radiated a certain preciousness cultivated over time. Several times, Feng Ning felt an urge to reach out and touch her face.
The little girl was quick-witted, much smarter than that chubby Zhao Fanyu. When they were discussing lessons, Feng Ning would explain a concept briefly, and she would grasp it immediately.
During the break, while Feng Ning was drinking water, Jiang Yuru tilted her head slightly back, her eyes curving into a smile as she called out, "Tutor Sister."
"Hmm?" Feng Ning felt her heart melting.
"Just now, my brother asked me to tell you something."
"What is it?"
"Come a little closer." Jiang Yuru waved her hand, looking very mysterious.
Feng Ning leaned in to listen.
Jiang Yuru recalled, her childish voice bright and innocent, saying, "Brother wants me to secretly ask you who is more handsome, him or Cousin Jing."
Jiang Wen had a slight fever and didn't wake up until the afternoon. The heating was high, and he had worked up a light sweat.
The room was quiet, and he felt a gentle touch on his face. He struggled to open his eyes; the curtains were tightly closed, and the surroundings were dim. After a moment of confusion, Jiang Wen recognized that the shadow in front of the bed was Jiang Yuru.
He sat up slightly, his voice tired and hoarse, "How did you get here?"
"Aunt Cai carried me here."
"Finished with your extra lessons?"
Jiang Yuru struggled to climb onto her brother's bed and flopped onto his legs. "I finished a long time ago! It's almost time for dinner now."
Her legs were not very convenient, so Jiang Wen shifted to the side to stabilize her shoulder. "What about that sister?"
"Tutor Sister?"
Jiang Wen nodded and turned on the bedside lamp. His lips were covered in dry skin, which he rubbed with the back of his hand.
He picked up a cup to drink water and heard Jiang Yuru say, "Sister has already gone back."
"When did she leave?" Jiang Wen moved his mouth slightly away from the rim of the cup.
"Just now."
Jiang Wen swallowed hard, tilting his head back to take small sips of water to soothe his throat.
Jiang Yuru rested her chin on her hands and looked at him. "Brother, I asked for you."
"What did you ask?"
"I asked Tutor Sister who is more handsome, you or Cousin Jing!"
Swallowing the water, Jiang Wen pretended to be casual. "Oh, what did she say?"
Jiang Yuru thought for a moment. "Sister said she would personally send you a WeChat message with the answer."
"Tell me?" Jiang Wen coughed slightly, putting down his cup, and asked her anxiously, "Did you tell her it was me who wanted you to ask?!"
Jiang Yuru nodded, her big eyes blinking innocently, completely unaware that anything was wrong. "Yes."
"......"
Jiang Wen fell silent. He closed his eyes for a moment and opened them again, trying to calm himself down.
Aunt Cai's voice came from the door. "Did Xiao Rou wake up your brother? It's time to eat."
Jiang Yuru replied, "Brother is awake."
Jiang Wen felt a headache starting again. He rubbed his forehead and said, "Aunt Cai, please take her out first. I'll change my clothes and come down."
After they left, Jiang Wen threw off the blanket and got out of bed. He stood up, feeling frustrated for a few seconds before quickly grabbing his phone that was charging.
His finger touched the WeChat interface but then pulled back.
Jiang Wen sat on the edge of the bed with his legs spread apart, his elbows resting on his knees, feeling a bit dazed.
At that moment, his phone vibrated slightly, creating a tingling sensation in his palm.
A message from Xi Gaoyuan popped up:
"Hey bro, what are you doing? Want to hang out? ❤️❤️"
Jiang Wen glanced at it but couldn't be bothered to reply. He maintained his position and stared into space for a while longer. After sorting through his thoughts, he tossed the phone onto the bed and sluggishly got dressed.
On his way downstairs, he opened his messages. After a moment of mental preparation, he clicked on Feng Ning's chat box:
There was only one emoji.
Leaning against the railing, he held the phone up to his face and zoomed in on the image.
"Get lost," it read in bold letters.
Jiang Yuyun passed by the living room and shouted from below, "What are you doing standing on the stairs? Hurry up and come down."
Staring at the message for a while, Jiang Wen found it hard to believe and sent back a question mark.
The reply came quickly, another sarcastic three words: "Stop comparing."
Taking a moment to calm himself, Jiang Wen went downstairs and sent her a series of ellipses.
-fnn: "You actually care about who looks better between you and your cousin?"
- w: ... I don't mind.
- fnn: Then why did you ask your sister to talk to me?
At the dining table, the servant was setting the dishes. Jiang Wen sat down in his seat, thought for a moment, and replied:
- w: I didn't ask her to talk to you.
- fnn: ?
Jiang Wen typed a long message in the chat box, then deleted it, and after deleting, he typed again.
- w: I just casually asked her today. As for why she later asked you, I don't know.
After sending the message, he kept staring at the chat box. It showed that the other person was typing.
His phone vibrated.
- fnn: Oh~~ so that's how it is!
After a slight pause, Jiang Wen typed:
- w: Whatever, how you think doesn't concern me.
Yin Yan coughed lightly and said softly, "Jiang Wen, don't play with your phone while eating."
Jiang Wen slightly turned his head away, absentmindedly picked up his chopsticks, took a bite of rice, and his eyes never left the phone screen.
Feng Ning sent a crying woman covering her mouth emoji, with the text: "How proud can I be? I'm so fragile, okay?"
-fnn: This is for you, Jiang Wen, typing with one hand.
-w: Are you mocking me?
-fnn: How could I dare?
Yin Yan raised her voice slightly, laced with anger: "Who are you messaging? Stop playing around and eat first!"
Just then, he realized that all the elders at the table were watching him.
Jiang Wen felt like a thief caught in the act and awkwardly set his phone aside.
Shuang Yao's parents had gone to another province to visit relatives, so she was staying at Feng Ning's house. During dinner, Shuang Yao suddenly asked, "How is Jiang Wen's home? Is it particularly luxurious?"
With his mouth full, Feng Ning thought for a moment and replied, "Actually, it's not that exaggerated. But the decoration at his place is indeed very extravagant, especially extravagant." He added, "I feel like I could easily steal something and sell it for a lot of money."
Shuang Yao asked, "Were you impressed?"
"Hmph, I've seen the world too, you know." Feng Ning said calmly, stuffing another egg into his mouth and mumbling, "But I was shocked by Jiang Wen's dad and uncles."
"Why?"
"In the morning, they all wore suits and looked like top-tier elites coming out of a skyscraper from a TV drama. The most impressive part was that they were followed by several black bodyguards; if you didn't know better, you'd think they were filming a mafia movie."
Shuang Yao listened with admiration on her face.
Qilan watched the two of them eat and, hearing this, gave Feng Ning a light tap on the head. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
"Mom, I want to drink cola," Feng Ning said in a spoiled tone.
Qilan shot her a glare and handed her a tissue to wipe her mouth. "What do you need cola for during meals?" After a moment, she asked, "Why did you go to your classmate's house to tutor his sister?"
Qilan was unaware that Feng Ning was working at a bar, and naturally, Feng Ning couldn't mention Zhao Huiyun. She calmly recited the excuse she had prepared earlier. "My classmate's sister is in the same class as Zhao Binlin's cousin. Zhao Binlin introduced me."
Qilan didn't suspect anything further, turned her head slightly, and coughed a couple of times. "Well, you need to take it seriously."
"Mom, why have you been coughing so much lately?" Feng Ning paused her chopsticks, feeling a bit worried.
Qilan waved her hand dismissively. "It's nothing; I've just been feeling a bit congested in my chest lately. I probably haven't been active enough."
Another day passed, and Feng Ning went to tutor Jiang Yuru.
Jiang Wen had not shown up at all.
Today's lesson went quickly. Checking the time, Feng Ning assigned a few problems to Jiang Yuru.
Jiang Yuru leaned over the desk, diligently working on the problems while Feng Ning, having nothing else to do, took out a chemistry test paper to work on alongside her.
The housekeeper came in and placed a plate of strawberries on the table before quietly leaving again.
Jiang Yuru grabbed a few strawberries and awkwardly jumped up from her chair.
Feng Ning put down her pen and hurriedly grabbed her. "Hey, hey, hey! Where are you going?"
Jiang Yuru held a porcelain plate and said, "Brother loves strawberries the most. Can you carry me over, Sister?"
Feng Ning lightly tapped her nose and took the plate, saying, "Sister can't carry you. You stay here and do your homework, and I'll help you take it over."
She had a good memory; she had followed Jiang Wen to his room once before. This time, she quickly found the place by feel, as the door was slightly ajar.
“Jiang Wen, your sister brought you strawberries.” After knocking for a while with no response, she faintly heard some noise. Feng Ning decided to push the door open and slipped inside.
She didn't enter his bedroom but casually placed the fruit plate on the bookshelf in the hallway.
Just as she was about to leave, she suddenly heard some movement behind her. Feng Ning turned around.
Jiang Wen had just pushed open the bathroom door, water droplets glistening on his black hair and face, sliding down.
For a second, they were both stunned.
Their eyes met directly; Feng Ning opened her mouth in shock, her eyes wide with fear as her gaze uncontrollably drifted downward.
Jiang Wen froze and looked down as well.
His skin, freshly washed, appeared pale pink under the light and steam from the bathroom behind him.
However, he was completely naked, without even wearing shorts. He stood there exposed in front of Feng Ning, an overwhelming sight that struck her senses like a bolt from the blue. Jiang Wen slightly parted his lips and called out while covering himself with his hand.
Feng Ning, as if waking from a dream, quickly covered her eyes and turned away. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t see anything! I’m leaving right now.”
Feng Ning fumbled her way toward the door like a blind person trying to find an elephant. Just as she reached for the doorknob, she suddenly heard a series of knocks.
Jiang Yuyun called out, "Xiao Wen, are you there?"
Everything happened too quickly, and Feng Ning had no idea how to handle the situation. Without thinking much, she reflexively turned back.
Feng Ning paced in place for a couple of circles.
This is bad.
Like a gust of wind, she rushed past the petrified Jiang Wen. In a panic, she pulled open the wardrobe door and squeezed inside.
After a while, Jiang Wen finally opened the door.
Seeing his brother's cheeks flushed to the point of almost bleeding, Jiang Yuyun was puzzled and glanced into the room. "What's wrong with you? It took you so long to open the door."
Jiang Wen was stuck at the doorway, not letting go of the doorknob, steadying his voice. "It's nothing. I just finished showering and was getting dressed."
Jiang Yuyun believed him and instructed, "We need to go out at five o'clock."
"Go out for what?"
"The company annual meeting is in a couple of days. Mom ordered you a few outfits; you need to try them on later."
"Okay, got it," Jiang Wen nodded.
Just before leaving, Jiang Yuyun suddenly asked, "Is there someone in your room?"
He feigned calmness. "No one."
The wardrobe was large, and Feng Ning sat atop a pile of clothes and pants, breathing nervously, anxiously eavesdropping on the sounds outside.
After a while, the cabinet door was pulled open.
Against the light, Jiang Wen looked pale, almost unrecognizable. He lowered his head and said to her, "Come out."
Feng Ning crawled out dejectedly.
An indescribable strange atmosphere spread between them. Even with her thick skin, Feng Ning was still just a girl.
At this moment, she was at a loss for words. Her gaze drifted off into the distance; her mouth felt dry, and she hesitated to speak: "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone about what happened today."
Jiang Wen's breathing grew heavier: "Who else would you tell?"
She awkwardly assured him, "I really won't tell anyone."
Fearing he wouldn't believe her, Feng Ning raised three fingers beside her temple, feeling no shame: "I swear, I will definitely forget everything I just saw as soon as possible."
Jiang Wen didn't look at her; his long eyelashes cast a shadow over his eyes. He took a deep breath.
Little did she know that what Feng Ning said next nearly made him spit blood in anger.
"I'm just afraid I'll get a stye."
