Hongjun raised his eyes to look at Ye Chuanze, who happened to look up as well, their gazes meeting.
At that moment, Ye Chuanze's eyes were deep and unfathomable, calm and still, resembling a desolate well, lifeless yet radiating a faint twinkle like the vast starry sky. His expression had clearly changed since before the lecture, as if a pearl was covered by a thin veil, its brilliance now subdued.
Hongjun's brows slightly moved, evidently noticing his change, and he thought to himself that this young man was extraordinary, someone whom even the Heavenly Dao could not bind.
Ye Chuanze met Hongjun's probing gaze with an indifferent expression. Although his eyes were calm and unperturbed, he was secretly startled. He had originally thought that Hongjun would not remember him, a nameless individual, but unexpectedly found that Hongjun was paying attention to him. In that moment, countless thoughts swirled in his mind.
Hongjun withdrew his gaze and looked blandly at the other immortals in Purple Cloud Palace. With an indifferent expression, he said, "This lecture ends here. Do you have any questions?"
One immortal asked, "What is the Dao?"
Hongjun replied, "Eighteen kinds of Great Dao and three thousand minor paths; all beings are the Dao. The path you walk is the Dao. The myriad laws of Dao lead to the same destination."
Another immortal asked, "What is my Dao?"
Hongjun answered, "The path you walk, the Dao you believe in, and the Dao you hold are your Dao Law. Follow your heart and seek according to your desires; that is your Dao Law. The Dao lies beneath your feet and within your heart."
An immortal asked, "How do I inquire about the Dao?"
Hongjun replied, "Your heart should be like a clear mirror, untainted by dust. A clear heart understands the Dao without obstruction. Maintain your true heart; remain steadfast and unshaken, neither angry nor discouraged; your Dao Law will naturally form."
...
After a moment of silence, Hongjun glanced at the immortals and seeing no further questions, he slightly parted his lips and said, "This lecture ends here. A thousand years later, the doors of Purple Cloud Palace will reopen for the second lecture."
The immortals bowed deeply in gratitude for the teachings of the Dao Ancestor.
"You may leave now," Hongjun waved his hand and paused before adding, " Ye Chuanze, stay behind."
Ye Chuanze was startled upon hearing this; did the Dao Ancestor specifically want to keep him? For what reason?
The immortals around him—Di Jun, Kunpeng, Jieyin, Zhun Ti—looked at him with curious expressions. Facing their gazes, Ye Chuanze remained calm. Go ahead and guess! Even if you rack your brains, you won't figure out why the Dao Ancestor kept me here. Hmm... I don't even know why myself! If you can figure it out, I'll kneel before you!
Although Ye Chuanze was puzzled as to why Hongjun had chosen to leave him behind, he did not feel worried; he knew that Hongjun meant him no harm. Thus, he remained calm and still in place while the other immortals gradually departed. Fuxi softly said to him, "I will wait for you outside with Nüwa; do not overthink it."
"Mm." Ye Chuanze responded lightly.
Once the immortals in the Purple Cloud Palace had left, leaving only Ye Chuanze behind, Hongjun slightly curled his lips and said in a cold and teasing tone, "We meet again, Black Lotus."
Faced with Hongjun's familiar words, Ye Chuanze's response was somewhat indifferent. He replied in a neutral tone, "Indeed, it has been a long time. How have you been, Hongjun Daoist?"
"Very well. And you?"
"Not bad."
"…"
For a moment, there was an awkward silence as neither of them had anything more to say.
After a while, a faint chuckle broke the silence. Hongjun spoke up, "It has been a thousand years since we last met, Black Lotus. Why do you no longer call me Master?"
Ye Chuanze was taken aback by this remark, clearly not expecting him to say such a thing. He had originally thought that the title of Master was merely his own designation, as Hongjun had never acknowledged him as a disciple. Hearing Hongjun say this caught him off guard, leaving him momentarily speechless.
Seeing Ye Chuanze's rare and stunned reaction, the smile on Hongjun's face widened. "What? Are you dumbfounded? Hurry up and call me Master."
Ye Chuanze finally snapped back to reality and quickly bowed his head in respect, saying with reverence, "Disciple greets Master."
A satisfied look flashed in Hongjun's eyes as he lightly acknowledged this, confirming Ye Chuanze's status as his disciple.
Ye Chuanze's heart trembled; he felt the connection of Karma and understood that from this moment on, he had officially become recognized as Hongjun's disciple. All previous calculations and considerations regarding Hongjun vanished instantly, leaving only admiration and respect in his heart. Since he had already taken him as his master, there was no need for further schemes or plots; a master would never harm their disciple. Now that Hongjun had formally accepted him as a disciple, he would only wish well for him.
Looking at his respectful disciple before him, Hongjun spoke again: "Your cultivation level is not low now, yet you have still not transformed into human form. This is indeed unfortunate. Why not stay in the Purple Cloud Palace until you can take form before leaving?"
Upon hearing this, Ye Chuanze couldn't help but feel a stir in his heart. Hongjun's words indicated that he wanted to help him transform. With someone like Hongjun—who possessed profound Dao Law—assisting him, Ye Chuanze's chances of transformation would significantly increase. This was truly uplifting news; however, after a brief moment of excitement, Ye Chuanze calmed down again. The tribulation of transformation was a personal trial for him—a test from heaven and earth. If he were to pass through it with the help of others, it would merely be taking shortcuts. He would not have truly faced the trials of heaven and earth nor achieved genuine tempering of his mind and spirit. This was not something to be proud of; it seemed beneficial but actually carried drawbacks.
After hesitating for a moment, Ye Chuanze made his decision and said to Hongjun: "I appreciate your kind intentions, Master, but I cannot accept them."
"Why?"
"Disciple wishes to face the heavenly tribulation alone. If I cannot even overcome a mere heavenly tribulation, how can I discuss the Dao or achieve supreme immortal techniques!" Ye Chuanze stated emphatically.
Hongjun, upon hearing this, opened his slightly closed eyelids and looked directly at him. Ye Chuanze met his gaze calmly, and after a long pause, Hongjun's voice came lightly, "As you wish."
"Thank you, Master, for your support."
Hongjun snorted lightly and said, "I have supported you; when will you support me? My disciple cannot forever be just a lotus flower."
Hearing this, Ye Chuanze appeared relaxed and replied, "Master, do not worry. I will surely transform into human form and live up to your expectations."
Since ancient times, disciples have often been a burden; at this moment, Hongjun began to understand this saying. Ye Chuanze was born to be a burden, never allowing others to rest easy. Thinking of Ye Chuanze's difficult path to transformation, even Hongjun felt a bit of a headache. He waved his hand and said wearily, "Remember your words; do not deceive me. Since you are unwilling to stay, then leave on your own!"
Seeing his weary expression, Ye Chuanze understood he was tired. Then he thought about how Hongjun had lectured without rest for three thousand years and couldn't help but feel amazed—truly worthy of being the Dao Ancestor! If it were him, not to mention three thousand years; even three hundred years would make him drowsy. So he casually remarked, "Master, please take care to rest! Even if your body is well, your mind also needs recuperation." Lecturing without rest for three thousand years is indeed too taxing on the spirit.
Hongjun glanced at him upon hearing this and then slightly lowered his gaze, lightly scolding, "You are so troublesome." Although he said this, there was no trace of annoyance in his tone. After a pause, he added, "I appreciate your good intentions."
After hearing this, Ye Chuanze smiled slightly and took his leave.
