I looked at him, my mind blank.
Chuming also looked at me, his gaze dark and his thin lips pressed tightly together.
He regretted it.
But as the proud president of the Chu Corporation, he couldn't bring himself to say sorry.
Shen Rou clung to his arm, smiling triumphantly.
"Juan, I'm going to meet A-Ming's parents tomorrow. Can you help me pick out a gift? After all, you've been married to A-Ming for three years, so you should know them well."
Shen Rou's words made the private room fall silent again.
All eyes turned to me, probing, mocking, ridiculing.
I remained silent, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
But everyone present believed I would comply.
After all, I had always been generous.
Du Ming couldn't hold back any longer; he stepped forward and coldly looked at Shen Rou: "Shen Rou, are you looking for trouble?"
Shen Rou shrank back behind Chuming, feigning fear: "A-Ming, I'm scared..."
Chuming soothingly patted her shoulder and turned to Du Ming: "Mr. Du, please show some restraint."
"You’re protecting this woman?" Du Ming pointed at Shen Rou and said sharply, "Do you know what she has done abroad?"
Chuming remained unfazed: "Mr. Du, my affairs are none of your business. You should focus on your own company; I've heard that someone has been maliciously trying to seize your company's resources. If you don't take action soon, the Du family might go bankrupt."
Du Ming sneered: "Are you threatening me?"
Chuming smirked: "I'm just reminding you."
Du Ming scoffed: "For Yang Juan, I would give up not just my company but even my life."
Chuming's expression darkened: "Then let's see who can laugh last."
The atmosphere was tense and ready to explode.
I picked up the red wine on the table and slowly walked over to Shen Rou.
Shen Rou shivered in fear: "Juan, what... what are you going to do?"
I smiled and splashed the red wine from my glass onto her face, my voice cold and heavy:
"Of course, it's about you."
"Yang Juan!" Chuming shouted angrily, "You’ve gone too far!"
I smiled sweetly: "Too far? I've always been like this."
"I've always been petty and calculating, never generous. Did you just realize that today?"
After saying that, I took Du Ming's hand and turned to walk out.
Behind me came Shen Rou's cries and the murmurs of the crowd.
I walked away gracefully without looking back.
The next morning, I woke up in the apartment.
Du Ming was busy in the kitchen, humming a tune.
Seeing me awake, he smiled brightly: "Good morning!"
"Why are you so happy?" I asked.
"I went to buy ingredients with the aunties in the neighborhood early this morning. Impressive, right?" Du Ming said proudly, "I'm an exceptional husband."
I knew his feelings for me.
But I felt I didn't deserve him.
Du Ming came over and gently hugged me: "Are you hungry? I'll go make you breakfast."
I nodded: "I'm hungry."
Du Ming went back to the kitchen to get busy.
After a while, there was a loud bang from the kitchen.
I hurried over and saw Du Ming standing there, at a loss, like a child who had done something wrong.
"I... I don't know how to use this pot," he said awkwardly.
I chuckled and walked over, pushing him out of the kitchen: "Let me handle it."
Du Ming stood at the kitchen door, watching me make breakfast with a gentle smile.
Soon, breakfast was ready.
We sat facing each other, quietly eating.
Sunlight streamed through the window, and time felt peaceful.
I didn't expect Lin Qiu to come looking for me.
