He said it was possible he would be transferred to a bigger city. I nodded without saying anything. Yet, I felt an inexplicable sense of loss inside. It seemed like my life had fallen into a deadlock, and no matter how I tried to escape, I couldn't get out.
After recovering from my cold, I began to throw myself wholeheartedly into my work. My career started to show signs of improvement, and my superiors were preparing to entrust me with more important tasks. Just when I was filled with joy and ready to make a big push, Ma Jia suddenly appeared.
That day, as I left the office, I saw Ma Jia standing downstairs. I frowned slightly and walked over to him. "What are you doing here?"
"Xiaoyue," Ma Jia looked at me, "Can we talk?"
"We have nothing to talk about," I refused without a second thought. I had already blocked him; I really didn't understand what he wanted.
Ma Jia lowered his gaze. "Xiaoyue, I've already bought a house and paid the down payment. Please... come back to me, or else the house won't have your name on it."
I was taken aback for a moment before realizing what he meant. Was he threatening me with the house?
"Return all my salary to me," I said coldly.
Ma Jia pressed his lips together. "I've already used that money for the down payment."
"What do you mean?" I couldn't believe my ears.
"On what basis are you using my money for the down payment?"
"Xiaoyue, didn't you say that all your salary goes to me?"
Ma Jia looked at me in confusion.
"Isn't it normal for me to use your salary for the down payment?"
"Give me back my salary!" I shouted at him, "Give it back!"
Ma Jia shook his head, "No."
"Then don't come looking for me again," I said coldly.
Ma Jia widened his eyes, " Xiaoyue, I've already bought the house. Are you really not going to marry me?"
" Ma Jia, you make me sick!"
I threw down those words and turned to leave.
At that moment, I truly understood that Ma Jia didn't want to marry me; he just wanted a wife—someone to take care of his parents, do the housework, and cook for him.
He didn't like me, just as I didn't like him.
I never expected that when I was at my lowest point, I would receive a call from Xiao An.
On the phone, Xiao An told me that my wedding was canceled.
"Xiaoyue, how could your wedding be canceled? Did Ma Jia cheat on you?"
I let out a bitter laugh, "I guess so."
"What do you mean 'I guess so'? Xiaoyue, you initially liked Xiao Huai,
"I told you that you should be with Xiao Huai, but you wouldn't listen and insisted on being with Ma Jia. Now look, the wedding is canceled, what a disgrace." I smiled and said, "Yeah, I did like Xiao Huai back then." If only I could have continued to like Xiao Huai. Unfortunately, to avoid him, I chose someone I didn't love.
"Xiaoyue, are you feeling unwell? You seem a bit down," she asked. "I'm fine," I replied with a smile. "I might just be a little tired."
"Alright then, I won't disturb you any longer. I'll hang up now."
"Okay."
I hung up the phone and let out a deep sigh. Xiao An has always been so willful, saying whatever she wants and doing whatever she pleases without caring about what others think. I wish I could be like her, but I can't; I have too much weighing on me—my parents, friends, and... Xiao Huai.
Right now, the most important thing for me is to get my money back from Ma Jia. I called my lawyer, who informed me that as long as I provide the transfer records and chat logs, I can prove that this money is what Ma Jia owes me. Then, I should be able to recover it. Hearing my lawyer's words, I felt a huge sense of relief.
