On the first day after being fired, I lay flat at home.
My boyfriend, Ma Jia, rushed in with a gift:
"Yueyue, how did you get fired?"
I was surprised: "Did my mom tell you?"
Ma Jia looked a bit awkward and stammered:
"I heard it from my uncle..."
I scoffed: "So your uncle is running errands for Xiao Huai?"
Ma Jia shoved the gift into my hands:
"Yueyue, you should go apologize to President Xiao!"
"This job was arranged for you by President Xiao's mom. If President Xiao finds out you're being so willful, how will you face him in the future?"
"You have no idea how much effort my uncle put in to get you this opportunity..."
Ma Jia rambled on, but the core message was clear—he wanted me to apologize to Xiao Huai.
I remained silent, and Ma Jia became anxious:
"Yueyue, why are you being so unreasonable?"
"If I lose this job, how am I supposed to explain it to my family?"
At that moment, my mom called:
"Yueyue, do you want me to talk to Xiao Huai's mother?"
"Even though their family is doing well now and looks down on us old neighbors, we do have some history..."
I rubbed my temples and sighed:
"Mom, just don't get involved."
My mom kept nagging:
"Your uncle worked hard to find this job for you. You can't just say no. How am I supposed to explain it to the family?"
"Don't be like your dad and just wash your hands of it..."
Amid their back-and-forth, I gradually felt immense psychological pressure.
It seemed that if I didn't try to salvage the job, I would be a sinner for eternity.
I compromised: "Fine, I'll go visit Xiao Huai."
My best friend Xiao An is Xiao Huai's sister; their family situation is similar to mine.
But Xiao Huai's family is different; both his parents are highly educated intellectuals and are considered prominent figures in Jiangcheng.
As soon as I walked into Xiao Huai's house, I saw several valuable calligraphy and paintings hanging on the wall.
My family has cross-stitch art hanging up.
In comparison, I felt ashamed.
Xiao An, Xiao Huai, and I grew up together; we can be considered childhood sweethearts.
Xiao An has always treated me well, and even though we went to different universities, we still kept in touch.
However, Xiao Huai has always been cold towards me, especially during my early high school romances when he unknowingly ruined my plans countless times.
He even caused me to face a lot of scolding from my parents.
I have held a grudge against him since then, and during the first winter break after graduating from university,
Taking advantage of Xiao Huai being at home, I prepared to get back at him. I rushed into his room, intending to teach him a good lesson. However, things spiraled out of control. Not only did I fail to reprimand him, but I also ended up sleeping with him in a daze. Looking back now, I still think I was crazy.
That night, I just wanted to give Xiao Huai a lesson because he was so annoying and always ruining my plans. But somehow, as I was trying to teach him a lesson, it turned into a kiss, and then... Although Xiao Huai was quite good-looking, I had always regarded him as an older brother and never had any inappropriate thoughts about him.
Perhaps it was the beautiful moonlight that night or maybe the effects of alcohol; I lost my senses and did something I shouldn't have done. In short, that night was absurd. Later, I returned home in shame but never saw Xiao Huai again.
The next time I saw Xiao Huai was at a company banquet welcoming the new leader. He had been parachuted in as the top leader while I had been fired for making a small mistake. To ensure I could stay, my mom specially bought a gift for me to take to Xiao Huai's house.
When Xiao Huai's Mother saw me, her face lit up with smiles. “Yueyue, you said you would come without bringing anything!”
“Auntie, this is for my grandparents.”
I obediently handed over the gift. After Xiao Huai's Mother took it and placed it on the table, she said to me, “Your grandparents are traveling right now. Later tonight, I'll video call them and let them know you came by.”
