Zhong Kui's Diary
What? Chukai is dead?
In an instant, all my sleepiness vanished. Damn, what the hell is going on?
After hanging up the phone and asking Fatty for the location, I quickly got up, went outside, and hailed a taxi, tossing fifty bucks at the driver: "Get me to Liberation Road Changshun Hotel as fast as you can, and this fifty is all yours."
The taxi driver acknowledged with a casual "Oh," and slowly shifted gears.
"Dude, don't you want to make money?" I said, feeling a bit impatient.
"Come on, from here to Liberation Road Changshun Hotel, the meter would be at least forty-five or fifty bucks. You think I'm going to rush for just a few extra bucks?" The taxi driver shot me a disdainful glance.
I was about to pull out more cash when the taxi driver chuckled: "Just kidding! Even if you don't give me extra, I'll still try to get you there faster. After all, if you get out sooner, I might pick up another passenger, right? But if you want me to run a red light, that's not happening."
With a smile, he glanced at me and continued: "You're in such a hurry to get to Changshun Hotel, are you going to see Chu Cang Hai's son jump off?"
I was surprised: "Oh? How do you know about that?"
The taxi driver laughed heartily: "In our line of work, we keep up with the news. When Chukai fell, one of my colleagues was waiting for passengers right outside the hotel. He was shouting on the radio and taking photos to post on WeChat, busy as can be. Tsk tsk, I even have him on WeChat and recognized him right away; that's Chu Cang Hai's son. I've already shared it; there will definitely be countless comments from friends later. I'll be busy with that..."
As the taxi driver rambled on, he dropped me off at the entrance of Changshun Building.
I got out of the car and found Fatty. I asked, "Where's the body?"
"It's already been taken away."
"Are you sure it's Chukai?" I asked suspiciously.
"Although his blood vessels burst and his face is purple," Fatty sighed, "his mother fainted on the spot after confirming it, so it shouldn't be wrong."
"When you arrived, was his body still there?" I frowned.
"Yes."
"Did you take any photos?"
"I took about ten." Fatty pulled out his phone and handed it to me.
I quickly scrolled through the photos and found one showing Chukai's right hand/arm. There was a clear five-centimeter cut, which was exactly where I had injured him with the broken bottle yesterday.
This person was indeed Chukai.
I felt a wave of frustration. Although I had no personal connection to Chukai and wouldn't feel sad about his death, his passing meant my plans could no longer proceed. I couldn't use this incident to prove my abilities to Li Haifeng. To infiltrate the Li Family, I would have to come up with another plan.
Following Fatty, I walked back dejectedly. After a short while, my phone rang. When I answered, Li Meng'er shouted from the other end, "Zhong Zhengnan, what are you doing? I only asked you to help me get rid of Chukai's harassment, not to kill him!"
"Uh, Sister Li, do you think I did this?" I said with a bitter smile.
"Wasn't it you?" Li Meng'er retorted angrily.
"Given the price we agreed upon, do you really think I would kill someone for that little money?" I was feeling a bit frantic.
"Is this really surprising? Some people would take risks for just a few dozen dollars," Li Meng'er scoffed.
"I can't explain it to you, anyway, it wasn't me," I hung up the phone directly.
Don't try to explain anything to an agitated woman. This saying is from Confucius; the ancients do not deceive me. What? It's not recorded in books? Nonsense, Confucius said so much; does every single word get recorded?
I could understand Li Meng'er’s panic. She had just entrusted me to deal with Chukai, and then Chukai fell to his death. There was no way to escape the charge of incitement to murder. A girl in her early twenties encountering such a major incident would be strange if she didn't panic.
The phone rang again. Looking down, it was still Li Meng'er. Reluctantly, I pressed the answer button and heard her roaring on the other end: "Hello! What's wrong with you? Why did you hang up on me?"
"Damn it, it wasn't us who did it, why shouldn't I hang up?" I was extremely frustrated.
"Zhong Zhengnan! You actually cursed at me?" Li Meng'er shouted even more angrily.
"Uh, that wasn't a curse; it's a catchphrase to express my surprise."
"Damn!"
"Uh, is there anything else?"
"Come to my house later; my dad wants to see you." After saying this, Li Meng'er huffed and hung up the phone.
Huh, what's going on? Li Haifeng actually wants to see us?
I told Fatty what Li Meng'er said, and he was equally puzzled, scratching his head and saying, "What does Li Haifeng want with us? Does he think I'm young and promising and wants to betroth Li Meng'er to me?"
I laughed and scolded, "Damn, what you're thinking about is definitely not matchmaking, but rather mating!"
Fatty immediately beamed with joy, "Ghost Brother really understands me."
...
Li Haifeng's home is located in the Wangjiang South District of Chaoyang District. This area, like Chaoyang City, is purely a villa district situated by the Star Riverbank, boasting beautiful scenery. Moreover, since Li Haifeng is a developer, just like the Jin Family's villas, the Li Family's villa is also twice the size of other villas in the area.
Upon reaching the Li Family's entrance, I pressed the doorbell. A woman in her thirties with a pleasant appearance led us into the living room. Inside sat three people: a middle-aged man in his forties with bright eyes sitting in the middle of the sofa, alongside Tang Liping and Li Meng'er. Upon seeing us, Tang Liping nodded slightly as a greeting, while Li Meng'er snorted and remained silent.
The middle-aged man invited us to sit down and instructed the woman to serve tea before dismissing her. He then said, "I am Li Haifeng."
Fatty and I responded with smiles, placing the Hui Ren Shen Bao gift box on the coffee table. I smiled and said, "We came in a hurry; this is just a token of our respect."
Fatty also added with a grin, "As long as everyone is happy, that's what matters."
A glimmer of amusement crossed Li Haifeng's eyes as he turned to Tang Liping and asked, "Is he Zhong Zhengnan?"
Tang Liping was taken aback upon seeing the Hui Ren Shen Bao I was holding, then her expression turned to one of mixed laughter and tears. Hearing Li Haifeng's question, she quickly nodded repeatedly.
Li Haifeng turned back to me and smiled, saying, "Before you arrived, I had someone investigate your background. I just didn't expect that the renowned Ghost Brother would be so young."
"That's just people joking around; I'm undeserving of such praise," I humbly replied.
Li Haifeng nodded and pondered for a moment before saying, "You used to run a company that helped people catch ghosts; now you've switched to solving various troubles for people, right?"
"Indeed," I answered honestly.
"My wife entrusted you to help my daughter get rid of Chukai's entanglement, didn't she?" Li Haifeng then asked.
"Yes, that's correct."
"Can you tell me about your original plan?" Li Haifeng smiled slightly.
I didn't hide anything and laid out the plan. When Li Meng'er heard that the so-called hero saving the beauty was just us deliberately letting her discover it, she couldn't help but snort coldly. Li Haifeng cast a faint glance at her, and she immediately lowered her head in silence.
After I finished explaining all the plans, Li Haifeng nodded and pondered for a moment: "I have to say, your plan is quite perfect. If Chukai doesn't cause any trouble, I believe you will definitely complete this task successfully."
Both Fatty and I shamelessly raised our index and middle fingers and cheered.
"I'm sure you are aware of what happened with Chukai this morning," Li Haifeng changed the subject.
"Yes," I nodded.
"I have something I need your help with," Li Haifeng said slowly.
His words puzzled me a bit. With Chukai already dead, what else could he need our help with? I scratched my head and asked, "What is it?"
Li Haifeng glanced at Tang Liping beside him: "My ability to navigate the business world is not only due to having Ping as my capable partner but also because I have two other capable assistants."
"I imagine these two assistants are also extraordinary individuals," I replied with a smile.
"A capable assistant named Diao Qi, while not particularly talented, can handle all the trivial matters perfectly. To put it bluntly, he is a local expert who knows all the ins and outs of Star City. Many things I cannot handle personally can be resolved by him." Li Haifeng sighed, "Unfortunately, he went missing recently, and no one knows where he has gone."
"Ah, missing?" I exclaimed in surprise, but inwardly I couldn't help but laugh; Diao Qi was currently playing with lice in the Song Family's dungeon.
Li Haifeng nodded and continued, "My other capable assistant is named Dongfang Xiao. If Diao Qi's help to me is like a foundation, then Dongfang Xiao's assistance is like the Underworld. He has been with me from the beginning, and our relationship is as close as father and son. He doesn't have any other background, but strangely enough, his connections are even broader than mine. Most officials in Star City give him face, and he navigates through large departments with ease; it's truly astonishing."
Hearing Li Haifeng say this reminded me of a joke circulating online about a young man who walked into the office of the World Bank president seeking the position of vice president. The president asked for a reason, and the young man claimed to be Bill Gates' son-in-law. The president immediately agreed. Then the young man went to Bill Gates' house to ask him to marry his daughter. Bill Gates also wanted a reason, and the young man said he was the vice president of the World Bank. Bill Gates instantly agreed as well...
Similarly, Dongfang Xiao, whom Li Haifeng values, might just be using Li Haifeng's name to interact with various departments and then leveraging those interactions to gain more trust and signing authority from Li Haifeng. Once he has signing authority, dealing with those departments becomes even smoother; it's a positive cycle, but the challenge lies in that initial step.
I nodded without saying anything, anticipating further comments from Li Haifeng.
"The incident with Chukai jumping off a building is related to Dongfang Xiao," Li Haifeng said slowly.
"What?" Both Fatty and I exclaimed in unison.
