The next morning, Ye Tian and the others bid farewell to the Old Shopkeeper and set off on their journey back to the Cloud Sea Sect.
This experience was a significant one for them, marking a turning point for their small team of four.
By the early morning of the following day, they finally returned to the Cloud Sea Sect.
Upon their return, the first priority was naturally to conclude their mission and then collect their Contribution Points.
The Huanggang Ridge mission was only a C-rank mission when they accepted it, which meant it was a blue mission, and the Contribution Points would not be too many; everyone was mentally prepared for this.
"It should be at least a thousand points, right? I feel like this mission completely exceeded the scope of a C-rank mission; it could even be considered a B-rank or even an A-rank," Duan Liu reminisced about their repeated encounters with Huanggang Ridge over the past few months, feeling somewhat emotional.
"Forget your thousand points," Cold Moon shot Duan Liu a glare. This guy never thought things through; if they split a thousand points among four people, that would mean each person only got two hundred and fifty.
"Let's see what we get," Ye Tian said as he walked ahead. He genuinely hoped to exchange for more Contribution Points because he was eager to change his martial arts technique; the Bagua Thunder Seal was starting to lag behind his current level of strength.
Before long, they arrived at the place to exchange Contribution Points. It was a small pavilion that looked simple and unadorned, but all the wood used was high-quality century-old redwood.
Inside the hall, it was somewhat quiet since there were very few disciples delivering tasks early in the morning. An elder with a long white beard was dozing off at a desk.
"Elder, we would like to exchange for Contribution Points," Ye Tian approached respectfully and said.
The elder lifted his head and glanced at him lazily, asking, "Isn't it too early?"
Ye Tian was taken aback and quickly smiled, "Sorry to trouble you, Elder."
"Ah, you young folks never consider the feelings of us old people when doing things," the elder reluctantly opened a notebook that recorded both completed and pending tasks.
"What mission?"
"Huanggang Ridge," Ye Tian replied.
"I ask you what level?" The Elder with the white beard seemed to have a grumpy mood in his eyes.
"Blue, Grade C," Ye Tian replied patiently.
The Elder scoffed, clearly disdainful. A blue mission would at most yield five hundred Contribution Points. These young ones had the audacity to come knocking early in the morning; it was truly impolite.
Swish, swish, swish...
The papers were flipped through quickly. The Elder, still half-asleep, soon finished searching through the blue missions and finally looked up to ask, "Are you trying to fool me? There’s nothing about Huanggang Ridge in the Grade C missions."
"It’s Huanggang Ridge..." Duan Liu muttered softly.
"Then what am I talking about? Don’t argue back; if I say there isn’t, then there isn’t," the Elder said, puffing his cheeks and glaring, his temper quite bad.
Hearing this, the others exchanged glances, feeling somewhat helpless.
"Please take another careful look, Elder. It can’t possibly be missing," Ye Tian said with cupped hands.
"Sigh!"
Due to Ye Tian's good attitude and the fact that this was within the Elder's responsibilities, he couldn't really lose his temper and could only continue searching.
He quickly flipped through again but still found no record of a mission regarding Huanggang Ridge.
"There really isn’t any," the Elder said, spreading his hands. "Are you kids sure you didn’t get this mission from another disciple?"
"Can it be transferred?" Ye Tian asked curiously.
However, the Elder did not explain to him because in his impression, these young disciples must have just entered the Mountain Gate not long ago—meaning they knew nothing at all.
"Go find it yourself," the Elder tossed aside the notebook and picked up a teacup to start drinking tea.
Ye Tian took the notebook and began to search through it. He flipped through the blue intermediate tasks again and again, but there was indeed no record regarding Huanggang Ridge.
"How could this be?" Ye Tian wondered, puzzled by the situation. After working hard to complete a task, there was not even a mention of it.
"Wait!"
Suddenly, Elder Whitebeard seemed to think of something, startling Ye Tian.
"Elder, what is it?"
"Huanggang Ridge, right?"
Ye Tian nodded, and Elder Whitebeard snatched the notebook back and quickly flipped through it.
Before long, Elder Whitebeard's gaze stopped, and then he raised his head to scrutinize Ye Tian and the others from top to bottom, finally clicking his tongue in surprise.
The group felt confused and curiously asked, "Is there something wrong?"
"No, no. May I ask which sect you all belong to? What are your names? Do you have any... special identities?"
The polite inquiry from Elder Whitebeard left Ye Tian and the others stunned; the change in attitude was too abrupt.
Duan Liu suddenly seemed to become clever and immediately realized that Elder Whitebeard had noticed their extraordinary status. He proudly said, "This is Yun'er from Azure Cloud Pavilion. This one is also a disciple of Azure Cloud Pavilion and a direct disciple named Cold Moon."
Then Duan Liu pointed at Ye Tian with an even prouder expression and said, "This is Ye Tian, a direct disciple of Cloudscroll Pavilion. Hehe, both Ye Tian and Cold Moon are holders of Cloud Tokens."
Upon hearing this, Elder Whitebeard was greatly astonished. It was rare to see one or two direct disciples teaming up for tasks, let alone encountering two Cloud Token holders at once today. Moreover, judging by the imposing Young Disciple who introduced them, he likely had an even more significant background since the most important figures were usually reserved for last.
"Then may I ask which sect you belong to and what your identity is..." Elder Whitebeard's cloudy old eyes seemed to brighten. He felt that he had little room for advancement in his life; getting to know a few future successors of Cloud Sea Sect would definitely be a good thing.
"Hey, I...," Duan Liu said shyly, brushing his hair back, "I won't tell you."
"......"
Everyone was stunned, not expecting Duan Liu to act this way.
"It's fine, it's fine." The Elder with the white beard became even more convinced that Duan Liu was someone of significance. After all, people with true status often have peculiar temperaments and behaviors; it wouldn't be surprising if this fellow was personally recruited by the Lord into the Mountain Gate.
"Elder, may I ask about our mission...?" Ye Tian inquired.
"Oh right, right, right, it's like this. The mission for Huanggang Ridge was issued several months ago, but at that time, the reconnaissance was inaccurate and we couldn't ascertain Huanggang Ridge's true strength. So after clarifying things a month ago, the Elder Association responsible for issuing missions decided to cancel it and reissue it," the Elder with the white beard explained patiently after learning their identities.
"Wait a minute, reissue?" Duan Liu's eyes widened in disbelief as he said, "Does that mean we wasted our efforts?"
"Of course not. Although the mission hasn't been officially reissued yet, you have already leveled Huanggang Ridge. This is equivalent to completing the mission after accepting it," the Elder smiled kindly, but anyone could see how deliberate he was being.
"Then may I ask, Elder, how many Contribution Points can we receive?" Ye Tian was most concerned about this question.
"After clarifying Huanggang Ridge's strength, it has jumped two levels from a C-level mission to an A-level mission. Moreover, based on your completion speed, there will be additional Contribution Points as a subsidy..."
"Just tell us directly how many Contribution Points we can receive," Ye Tian interrupted the Elder's lengthy explanation.
"You can receive five thousand points for completing the mission, and with the speed subsidy, you will also be rewarded an additional one thousand points. In total, that's six thousand points."
"What?!"
Everyone was shocked; they hadn't expected that the Huanggang Ridge mission would yield such abundant Contribution Points. Their risky venture had truly paid off.
It's worth noting that six thousand Contribution Points could be exchanged for a martial arts book of at least local level.
"That's really..." Duan Liu was so excited he could hardly speak. Before he met Ye Tian, he was just an ordinary disciple of Cloudscroll Pavilion. Completing a C-level mission required forming alliances and still wasn't guaranteed success; his accumulation of Contribution Points had been pitifully small. Now suddenly becoming wealthy left him overwhelmed with emotions.
"Elder, what does the speed reward mean?" Ye Tian asked with a frown.
Duan Liu tugged at his sleeve and whispered, "Why ask? I think it's just an old fool who miscalculated. Contribution Points are never too many."
Ye Tian rolled his eyes at him; this guy never thought deeper about things. He suspected that the so-called speed reward was a way for the white-bearded elder to curry favor with them for personal gain. If that were the case, they definitely should not accept the thousand points of speed reward.
As the saying goes: taking someone's money to help them out, there are no free lunches in this world.
"Oh, this." The white-bearded elder didn't think much about it and replied, "This task is going to be reissued. Since you completed it before the reissue, it should count as completing it in the first instance. Any task completed in the first instance will have a certain amount of Contribution Points as a reward, and the amount depends on the difficulty of the task."
"Is there really such a rule?" Ye Tian was still somewhat skeptical because he had never heard of it before.
"There really is." Cold Moon had already completed many tasks, so she knew this was true, although she had never received a speed reward before.
"Oh, I understand now." Ye Tian quickly grasped the rationale behind the existence of speed rewards. The longer a task exists, the more likely it is to cause certain dangers; thus, completing a task in the first instance is naturally more worthy of a reward than delaying it for a long time.
However, after realizing this, Ye Tian felt somewhat ashamed. They had dragged out the Huanggang Ridge task for several months; accepting this so-called speed reward felt quite awkward.
At that moment, Duan Liu cleverly seized the opportunity. He noticed Ye Tian's hesitation and tossed his wooden ruler onto the table to get the white-bearded elder to add to their Contribution Points. Then he directly pushed Ye Tian out the door, not giving him a chance to speak.
