If it were possible now, "death" would undoubtedly be God's greatest gift to Anna.
With her limbs already numb, Anna saw the tattoo of a Bird on the man's forehead through the weak light of the flashlight, like an evil totem invading Anna's crumbling defenses.
The man's hand reached for the last piece of Anna's clothing, and she closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face. How bad could it get? It was worse than death.
"Bang!!"
The gates of hell burst open, and the originally dim light transformed into an infinitely expanding brightness.
The man did not expect anyone to come and instantly hid away into an unknown place.
"Anna!" It was Park Chan-yeol's shout, instantly driving away the terrifying black insects in the room.
Anna opened her eyes, feeling warm clothing wrap around her.
Seeing the space empty, the man fled the scene.
"Stop!" Park Chan-yeol wanted to chase after him.
"Don't," Anna said.
Park Chan-yeol halted, looking at Anna, who was covered in dirt and blood.
"I beg you, please... don't let anyone else know. Take me away from here, take me home." Anna clutched at a corner of Chan-yeol's clothing as if she were a person sinking to the bottom of a well who had finally grasped a rope.
Chan-yeol felt as if he had been struck by a heavy punch, the cruel darkness unfolding before his eyes, unguarded, like a scene from a movie.
He clenched his fists, took a deep breath, wrapped Anna securely, and lifted her from the cold ground.
"Thank you."
Thank you for not letting me fall into the abyss of despair.
Anna buried her face in Chan-yeol's shoulder; he didn't want anyone to see him like this.
The phone rang. He picked it up to see it was Yixing calling.
"Chan-yeol? Where are you? Brother Kwangsoo and I are on the third floor, and we haven't found Anna."
"Oh, she's with me."
Anna trembled slightly, looking at Chan-yeol with pleading eyes, shaking her head gently.
"Really? You found her? That's great! Where are you? We'll come find you."
"We... Anna seems to have caught a chill. I'm already on my way to take her home."
"What?! We've been looking for so long. How could you not say anything...?" Yixing complained.
"Alright, I can't talk right now. Just tell Brother Kwangsoo not to worry."
"Hey..."
Before Zhang Yixing could say anything else, Chan-yeol hung up the phone.
"Thank you," Anna said, trembling. "Can you do me one more favor? Please take me home."
"Are you crazy? I'm taking you to the hospital."
"No!" Anna grabbed Chan-yeol's arm tightly, her terrified eyes still bloodshot, like a walking corpse. She pleaded cautiously, "I beg you, just take me home."
Chan-yeol shook his head and said, "You need to go to the hospital."
"Please! I just want to go home right now." Anna bit her lip hard.
Chan-yeol found it strange; he had expected Anna to burst into tears. Several times he thought she was about to cry, but since he arrived, not a single tear had fallen. Even when blood trickled from her bitten lip, what was she holding back?
Chan-yeol fell silent for a moment, just a moment, but it felt like a century. He sighed and said, "Alright."
In the car, there was an endless silence. Anna sat in the passenger seat, expressionless and numb to the pain. The only thing that lingered in her mind was the tattoo of the Bird; she couldn't remember anything else. It felt like a nightmare. When they arrived home, would everything return to normal as if waking from a dream? Just two hours ago, she had been happily chatting with everyone at the gym. How did it come to this?
Glancing inadvertently at her reflection in the rearview mirror, Anna was startled by her appearance—pale cheeks smeared with blood and dirt, disheveled hair, and bloodshot eyes. Who was that? It couldn't be her. Anna closed her eyes; everything would be fine once she got home.
Aside from hearing Anna's directions at intersections to confirm she was still alive, Chan-yeol often feared that she might just fade away.
Finally arriving home felt like an eternity. He barely had time to be surprised by the luxury of Anna's house before he lifted her out of the car. Anna wanted to say she had a key but looking down at herself in only Chan-yeol's oversized coat and disheveled underwear, she ultimately remained silent.
Chan-yeol pressed the doorbell, and soon, the door opened.
The moment Andy saw Park Chan-yeol holding the almost half-naked and bloodied Anna, he froze.
With no intention of letting Park Chan-yeol inside, Andy clenched his fists tightly and then took Anna from him.
"Andy." This call shattered all the defenses she had desperately maintained in front of her closest person. Tears streamed down her face like a broken dam.
Yes, it was only in front of someone completely unguarded that one could reveal their deepest weaknesses without reservation. All the suppressed grievances, fears, and pain finally came pouring out.
Andy glanced at Park Chan-yeol, who was also covered in blood and dirt, and took a step back.
"Come in."
Park Chan-yeol walked into the house, watching as Andy carried Anna upstairs. He stood dazed in the center of the living room on the first floor, feeling as if his limbs had suddenly stiffened, unable to make any movement.
Andy remained silent. He did not ask what had happened to Anna, nor did he express any excited concern. He filled the bathtub with warm water and gently placed Anna by the tub to sit down.
"Take a shower first. I'll wait for you outside, and then we can have dinner together," Andy said. His gaze was extremely calm. Anna looked into Andy's eyes, which were so serene that everything felt peaceful; she nodded slightly.
Andy closed the bathroom door and left the room.
