Liu Changtian led his team to push through the crowd and set up a cordon at the Li Family entrance. Technicians were busy inside the small house, and Liu Changtian frowned as the sight of the three dead bodies inside made his heart race.
On the bed lay a young woman with her eyes wide open and her abdomen cut open. On the floor, two male victims, one old and one young, lay not far apart, each with several horrifying wounds crisscrossing their bodies.
Liu Changtian rubbed his temples and turned to instruct the officer taking photos for documentation, “Xiao Li, take a few people outside to interview the neighbors.”
“Understood, Captain.”
“How was their relationship with the townspeople? Did they get along well?” The officer asked the onlookers while holding a notebook.
The crowd shrugged, “It’s average. They don’t really socialize much. Their eldest son runs a company and looks down on the townspeople.”
“Oh? Did they have any major conflicts with anyone?”
“There were some minor disputes, just typical arguments. But if you’re talking about deep-seated grudges, it’s not that serious. They’ve lived in this town for decades; what kind of grudge can be held for that long?”
“How is their family relationship?”
“Hehe...” A knowing smile appeared. “Their family was doing just fine.”
“What do you mean? Be specific.”
“A little over a year ago, a young woman moved in with them. She’s quite pretty. Their eldest son said she was going to marry his younger brother. You might not know this, but their younger son is mentally challenged; he’s been like that for twenty years, and no one in town wants to marry their daughter to him. But that girl was willing. Later, people in town found out she was actually the mistress of their eldest son. And let me tell you, this woman also has some unclear relationship with Li Weimin, that old lecher.”
“Uh... Are you implying that both father and son had inappropriate relationships with this young woman?”
“Yeah, I’m not making this up; people have seen it with their own eyes.”
“Who saw it?”
“How would I know? Go ask someone else.”
“Alright, we will inquire further. One more question: if this woman had inappropriate relationships with both father and son, how could the family matriarch—who is also the head of the household's wife—remain indifferent?”
“Hey, you don’t understand their family dynamics. Li Weimin is like a god at home; Wang Surong is just a servant. Whatever Li Weimin tells her to do, she does it without question; she doesn’t even dare to speak up. When he was younger, Li Weimin often beat Wang Surong, leaving her bruised all over. I remember one night when everyone in town was asleep; Li Weimin whipped Wang Surong with a belt, and she couldn’t take it anymore and ran out bare-bottomed while he chased after her into the street... That was many years ago—seven or eight years ago? So yeah, Li Weimin keeps a mistress at home while Wang Surong doesn’t dare say a word.”
The officer couldn’t help but frown and paused before asking, “So their eldest son just stands by?”
“Li Cheng is just like his father; he looks down on Wang Surong, treating her like a maid. But he does show some filial piety; he occasionally brings back health supplements for his father. But those things are all for Li Weimin, Wang Surong isn’t even allowed to touch them.”
“You mentioned they have a second son?”
“Yes, he woke everyone up early this morning; he’s mentally challenged and doesn’t know anything. When I saw him, he looked terrified and couldn’t even speak properly. Hey, where did he go? He was just here; maybe there are too many people around, and he got scared and hid somewhere.”
“Is he congenitally disabled?”
"No, it was the day after tomorrow, I think when he was eight years old, he had a high fever that damaged his brain. You wouldn't know, Ali, he is the second son of that family. He was such a beautiful boy when he was young, smart and lively, attending the elementary school in town with excellent grades, right?"
The crowd nearby nodded. "Yes, such a clever child. It's a pity; everyone thought he would achieve more than Li Cheng when he grew up."
"Has he ever shown any violent tendencies? Like attacking someone?"
"No, although he's not very bright, he's quite gentle. He smiles at everyone and has never spat at anyone or thrown stones. In the alley next door, there's an elderly man living alone, around eighty years old, with no food or clothes. Officer, just think about how pitiful that is. It seems Ali knew the old man was struggling; he would hold a bun in his hand and happily give it to him, saying 'Grandpa eat'—this old man cared for Ali when he was little. Even though Ali is not all there now, he knows who has been good to him. But the Li Weimin family treats Ali like... tsk tsk, it's hard to describe. They make him sleep in a garbage pile and eat leftovers, often beating him up; it's too cruel. Even I can't stand it as an outsider."
"By the way, Officer, there's one more thing. That woman, Ali's nominal wife, seems to have gotten involved with a wealthy man and is shouting about leaving. Do you think father and son might have stopped her from leaving? Maybe they got into an argument and then..."
"This needs to be investigated further; we cannot draw conclusions yet."
"The situation is as follows: based on interviews at the scene, the deceased Li Weimin exhibited severe tendencies of cruelty and male chauvinism. The deceased Wang Surong had a weak personality and was submissive at home with no standing. The deceased Li Cheng 'inherited his father's will' and shares a very similar style of conduct with Li Weimin, practically a younger version of him. The deceased Liu Wenyi, according to investigations, had a romantic relationship with Li Cheng. They were classmates in high school and had an ambiguous relationship but broke up due to academic pressure. A year and a half ago, they got back together; Liu Wenyi moved into the Li Family under the name of Li Li's wife, but there is no actual marriage between Liu Wenyi and Li Li...”
During the meeting, an officer was explaining the investigation results.
"Liu Wenyi and Li Weimin also had an improper relationship?" Liu Changtian asked in surprise while sitting in his chair.
The officer replied, "That's what the neighbors say, but whether this relationship truly existed can only be confirmed by those involved."
"But what benefit would this bring to a young professional like Liu Wenyi?" Deputy Captain Wang Yang said. "A special taste?"
"Liu Wenyi lives in the Li Family, right? As a married man, Li Cheng can't go over every day. And I've heard that Li Weimin has a bad reputation for personal conduct; so if Liu Wenyi wants to continue living in the Li Family, she inevitably has to pay some price," said one officer.
"What about the scene investigation?" Liu Changtian looked down.
An officer stood up to respond, "No signs of outsiders breaking in or entering illegally were found at the crime scene."
Liu Changtian frowned and said, "So the murderer must be among those known individuals? Xiao Xu, please continue."
"Yes, based on evidence from the scene: the first victim is Liu Wenyi, who suffered seven stab wounds; the weapon was an ordinary kitchen knife. The second victim is Li Cheng, followed by Li Weimin, and finally Wang Surong. They all died from being attacked with the same weapon. The knife bore fingerprints from Wang Surong, Li Weimin, and Li Cheng. Based on blood spatter patterns, it is inferred that Li Cheng arrived at the Li Family between three and three-thirty AM, retrieved the weapon from the kitchen, entered the room, and killed sleeping Liu Wenyi. Then Li Weimin entered the room and engaged in physical conflict with Li Cheng. During this conflict, Wang Surong arrived at the scene to mediate but ended up getting seriously injured along with both men due to their injuries not being treated promptly; they ultimately bled out."
Liu Changtian stroked his chin thoughtfully for a while before asking, "Have we received the forensic report yet?"
Before he finished speaking, a police officer burst into the meeting room holding a report. He was panting and looked surprised. "Captain! Symptoms of AIDS were found in Liu Wenyi!"
Liu Changtian suddenly stood up. "What?!"
