Chapter Three Hundred Ninety-Eight:
The seemingly small pond gave a sense of endlessness upon entering.
The clear water around became increasingly dark as one delved deeper.
Freya glanced back at the circular pond above her, feeling a shimmering sensation, and faintly noticed a few creatures poking their heads out to drink from the water.
Beneath the surface, red veins were clearly visible.
After a moment's pause, she focused her mind and continued to dive deeper into the water.
The serpent tail behind her swayed gently, propelling her forward with great speed, parting the water and leaving two white trails in its wake.
Hiss.
With a slight sound, Freya suddenly vanished completely, and then the massive form of King Cobra was fully revealed.
The soulless eyes of King Cobra reflected the red hues of the water below, exuding an indescribable sense of tranquility.
The surrounding water seemed to become part of King Cobra, pushing her enormous body forward.
The entrance above grew smaller and smaller until it was only the size of a pinprick, and the environment in the water began to grow increasingly profound.
Hoo.
A sudden surge of water erupted to the right of King Cobra, as if the still water was being displaced, forming several translucent whirlpools.
King Cobra looked to the right, where in the dark waters, a massive black fish was slowly swimming by.
The fish had dense black scales, two thick tails, and its dorsal fin was covered with upright white spikes that stood like spears.
On its flat Big Mouth were countless long whiskers, giving it an overall appearance reminiscent of a grotesque and terrifying catfish.
Behind this strange catfish, which was nearly the same size as King Cobra, followed a large number of similar creatures.
However, these seemingly terrifying beings were surprisingly gentle.
The white eyes of the fish curiously glanced at King Cobra before turning away and continuing to swim forward.
She watched curiously as this colossal creature disappeared into the darkness of the water and then ventured deeper once again.
It was unclear how long she swam. When the entire body of water turned completely pitch black,
'Puff.'
King Cobra seemed to pass through a transparent soap bubble, and the dark waters suddenly brightened.
Dots of green fluorescence floated in the water, some clinging to King Cobra's scales, creating a ticklish sensation.
Beneath this fluorescence, countless intertwined veins revealed the red Blood Cocoon clearly, with Tentacles visible.
"Hiss."
The massive figure of the King Cobra slowly transformed into countless green wisps of smoke, revealing Freya.
She gently swayed her green serpent tail and reached out to grasp a green light spot.
"Zhi."
The light spot instantly vanished at her fingertips.
Freya looked around at the bright waters, a hint of inexplicable emotion appearing in her eyes.
"This place is actually a World Bubble detached from the Wizarding World. No wonder."
After a pause, she slowly swam to the bottom, which was covered in intricate patterns, her green eyes reflecting a red glow.
The Blood Cocoon was not large, only about two meters in size, resembling a translucent Red Crystal. It was very beautiful.
Standing beside it, Freya felt as if the Blood Cocoon was gazing back at her.
This feeling was not unpleasant. On the contrary, it brought an inexplicable comfort, like seeing a mother with her child.
"Is it alive?"
Feeling that gaze, Freya gently placed her hand over the Blood Cocoon.
"Hiss"
Her entire arm had actually merged into the Blood Cocoon.
Then, a warm voice suddenly appeared in her mind.
"You finally came. I've been waiting for you here for a long time."
"Huh?" The voice in her head made Freya pause slightly. "Waiting for me?"
"Yes." The gentle voice replied softly. "I've been waiting for you all this time. If you had come any later, perhaps I wouldn't have been able to hold on."
"Then who are you, and why are you waiting for me?" Freya looked at the Blood Cocoon with confusion, sensing that the voice held no malice.
Although she had already confirmed that this was something left behind by the last King Cobra, she didn't expect it to possess self-awareness.
"I'm just a fragment of consciousness that survived; it doesn't matter." The voice sounded very happy. "What matters is that you came, you found me, so I will give you that thing. I'm tired of holding on for so long; I just want to rest now."
As soon as the voice finished speaking, Freya felt a gentle pulling force surge from within the Blood Cocoon, as if her hand was being held by another hand inside.
Then with a 'poof,' without any resistance, her entire body completely merged into the Blood Cocoon.
Her vision turned blood red and then became extremely expansive.
In a daze, Freya realized she was soaring through the air, surrounded by endless black rain clouds, with torrential rain pouring down onto the smoke-filled land below.
Behind her, the deep blue Storm Leviathan emerged with its massive body, bringing forth tumultuous waves and an almost invincible presence.
Amidst the ravaged land, enormous figures, both familiar and unfamiliar, crossed over from the giant mountains.
In addition to these colossal figures, there were countless wizards from various races floating densely in the air.
They waited solemnly for something.
A deep rumble echoed as a section of the earth rapidly rose. The scorching air seemed to boil, and then with a 'pop,' an ugly red head broke through the surface, glaring angrily at the distant sky.
There, dark cracks slowly widened, and countless pale arms struggled to reach out.
Between the arms were numerous White Eyes, gazing greedily at the outside world.
Suddenly, a harsh voice, as if countless languages were entangled together, echoed in the air.
"Ah, beautiful world!! Let us enjoy the pleasure of conquest!!"
...
At that moment, Freya was within the Blood Cocoon.
On the other side, thick rain clouds began to gather ominously over the entire Crimson Forest Trace.
The rain clouds plunged the entire land into darkness.
"Crack!"
As the first drop of rain fell, a heavy curtain of white rain descended upon the earth.
Amidst this downpour, a faint voice seemed to sing softly, filled with joy.
In a tower of Dark City.
A short-haired woman dressed in a black silk gown stood quietly by the window, calmly watching the sudden downpour.
The rain pounded against the Blackstone pavement, making a 'pat pat' sound.
On the streets below the tower, people bathed in the rain seemed to become happier.
"Click!"
The sound of a door opening was followed by a middle-aged man in a black suit, wearing a top hat and sporting two mustaches on his lips, quietly entering.
He walked up behind the woman, removed his hat, and slightly bowed. He spoke respectfully.
"Madam, this rain has just destroyed the Third Portal; it may affect our upcoming actions. I suspect it is the scheme of the Void King. Should we investigate?"
"No," the woman replied softly, still gazing at the torrential rain. "This is merely an old friend preparing to rest."
The man displayed a fleeting, inexplicable expression at the woman's strange words, but he understood that she was not someone of his caliber to speculate about. He nodded slightly and said,
"Yes, I understand."
With that, he walked out of the room.
Not paying attention to his departure, the woman looked up at the overcast sky, momentarily lost in thought as if something was swiftly dispersing there.
"Another one has left. Perhaps I am the last one remaining in this world. The delayed curtain call will eventually arrive, and all I can do is this."
With a gentle sigh, green sprouts began to emerge from the rain-soaked earth.
These sprouts were full of vitality and soon formed into trees, nourished by the rain and glimmering with faint light.
The breath of life subtly rose again in Crimson Forest Trace.
As the World Rule gradually revived, the weak World Barrier also began to show signs of healing.
...
Time flew by, though it was unclear how long had passed.
Suddenly, a crisp sound echoed from the bright waters.
'Crack!'
The Blood Cocoon split evenly in two, exposing Freya's curled body to the water.
Tiny bubbles rose from her.
It seemed that the change in environment caused Freya, with her eyes closed, to frown slightly before slowly opening her eyes.
Her deep blue pupils constricted as she looked around in confusion.
The bright red veins on the ground had completely lost their luster, and the dark greenish-black color covered the entire bottom of the water, resembling strange stones.
Suddenly, it seemed she remembered something and extended her right hand.
On the back of her hand, the King Cobra Mark that had always been there had disappeared at some point, leaving a blank space on her snow-white skin.
"The mark has vanished?" Freya thought, feeling a bit dazed. Many questions that had weighed on her heart found answers within the Blood Cocoon.
She even glimpsed some deeper truths.
She withdrew her right hand and looked at the eerily silent water around her.
"So this is the true meaning of King Cobra. It seems my previous understanding was too superficial. Protecting the world is merely a part of it; King Cobra encompasses the true significance of all that the Forest King once represented."
Freya lowered her head, memories of various scenes seen within the Blood Cocoon still faintly lingering in her mind.
It was a sense of reality that seemed to transcend the river of time, walking through an unknown realm.
"If the truth that the wizards are seeking really exists, then I think that might be the truth. It's time for me to leave this place."
Although she had gained something, reaching that level still required a long journey of experience and waiting.
After glancing at the gradually darkening waters, Freya dashed out of the World Bubble and returned to the Wizarding World.
......
Five years later.
Cloud City, in the Crimson Plain of Sky City.
In a luxurious villa located next to the Blood Eagle Territory Headquarters, Freya, dressed in a Red Robe, was in the botanical garden, watering the freshly bloomed red flowers with a watering can.
In the center of the flowers' pistils were the faces of innocent children, revealing joyful smiles as they were sprinkled with fresh water.
Knock, knock, knock.
A crisp knocking sound echoed from outside.
She put down the watering can and lightly snapped her fingers.
Some Cat Tail Grass floating in the air immediately began to meow and hurriedly flew to the glass door, eagerly opening it.
A man dressed in the same Red Robe, but with some white hair at his temples, walked in.
As soon as the man saw Freya, he immediately smiled.
"Hey, I knew you would be here."
"Well, what brings you here today, Seth?" Freya replied with a smile. "Finished up your work at the department?"
Upon hearing Freya's words, the smile on Seth's face instantly vanished.
"You, pushing most of the work onto me while you enjoy yourself here among the flowers and plants."
"To whom much is given, much is expected," Freya said casually, plucking something that looked like an apple from a fruit-laden tree and tossing it to him. "Consider this compensation. How about it?"
"The Seed of the Sun is fine; I'll take it as a debt owed to you. But I'm not here to complain," Seth said, putting away the fruit with a resigned expression. "Deputy Minister Mei Long has officially been promoted to Minister, so what do you think about the vacant Deputy Director position?"
"Me? What opinion could I have?" Freya replied nonchalantly. "I'm just a director and still the youngest in terms of qualifications. If you want the position, I'll vote for you."
"No, I mean, I plan to nominate you for Deputy Director," Seth said seriously. "The Blood Eagle Territory has expanded over the past decade; aside from guarding the giant beasts, it's almost on par with Sky City now. The authority of this position is much greater than you might think, and honestly, I believe there’s no one else in the department who can be appointed to this position besides you."
Despite Seth's serious demeanor, Freya still smiled.
"Hmm? Why is that? You know I've pushed most of my responsibilities onto you these past few years; by qualifications alone, I'm not fit for it at all."
"You just don't focus your energy on work," Seth sighed. "If you were a bit more serious about it, you'd definitely do better than us. And even if we old-timers wanted to compete for this position, we don't have much energy left. The Blood Eagle Territory needs new blood."
"Old man? You?" Freya teased. "You're not even three hundred years old this year. Even if you don't break through now, you still have over two hundred years to live. By the looks of it, you're just in your middle age, far from being old."
"I really am," Seth replied, not paying attention to Freya's teasing. After a pause, he continued, "Forget it, I'll let you in on a secret. Since four years ago, data from the research department has shown that several of our otherworldly portals have exhibited irreconcilable convergence phenomena. The resource extraction work from these other worlds may have to end prematurely in a few years, and the Elder Council has recently issued a confidential order."
"A confidential order?" Freya pondered for a moment. "Is it regarding the deployment and investigation of other worlds?"
"Pretty much," Seth shrugged. "And I've already submitted my application. I know my own qualifications; even though I still have over two hundred years, I don't want to wait around and die slowly. For a wizard, dying of old age is the saddest thing." (To be continued)
