Chapter 306:
"Ancient Beasts?" Senterman frowned as he looked at the Elemental Rune in his hand.
'Shh!'
A flash of Black Light flickered in his eyes, and then his hand easily severed, black-red blood immediately flowing from the broken wrist.
With a muffled sound, Senterman pressed down on the wound with his remaining hand, a subtle wave of energy passing through as a pitch-black three-dimensional Rune Array slowly formed at the site of the severed arm.
'Pfft!'
With a faint sound, the Rune Array surged violently, and then a tender white hand burst forth from the severed wrist.
The palm was still stained with traces of blood, and the veins on the back of the hand throbbed incessantly.
Freya quietly watched this scene, feeling no sense of abnormality whatsoever.
She pointed at Senterman's newly grown hand and calmly asked, "How long can you Collapse like this?"
A hint of pain crossed Senterman's face; he was not a Necromancer with Zombie traits, and this kind of limb regeneration magic consumed far more mental energy than it appeared.
Once the veins on the back of his hand gradually returned to normal, he replied.
"About three minutes. Don't worry, it won't affect the spellcasting. What should we do about this?"
He looked at the severed hand on the ground, marked with the Elemental Rune.
At that moment, the black eyes seemed to come alive, gazing curiously at the two, with pupils contracting and expanding repeatedly.
Freya snapped her fingers, and a wisp of black flame ignited at her fingertips.
"This Elemental Rune is merely residing in the flesh; let's burn it. After all, having it around is just an unknown variable."
"Alright!" Senterman nodded.
Then Freya pointed at the severed hand, and with a whoosh, the black flames enveloped it instantly. Before long, even the Elemental Rune was reduced to charred remains.
A faint smell of burnt flesh filled the air.
After watching the hand turn completely into Black Ash, Freya lifted her head to look around the spacious room.
The room resembled a vast, empty attic. During Senterman's unconsciousness, she had already explored this space.
She discovered that aside from the Passageway leading into this room, there was another door at the far end.
However, out of caution, she did not rashly enter alone but chose to wait for Senterman to wake up.
Senterman raised his finger and softly murmured a spell. A card-shaped mark immediately glowed on his fingernail, but the mark was gray, clearly ineffective.
After trying two more marks, Senterman frowned and looked at Freya.
"Where did you come from? Is there any clue to get out of here?"
"From that passage," Freya indicated the Passageway behind her. She then shook her head slightly. "But I don't recommend going back. There's an illusion corridor in there along with a large number of Spirits; if we're not careful, we might never get out."
"Spirits?" Senterman's pupils contracted slightly as he gazed toward the end of the room. "So it seems we only have that big door left?"
Freya took out two identical rings from her waist pouch and put them on her hands. She said calmly, "Let's go; staying here is pointless."
"Mm."
The two reached a consensus and walked to the door together.
Senterman reached out and grasped the doorknob, giving it a gentle pull.
With a swish, the door opened easily, revealing another passage inside.
However, compared to the one that Freya came from, both sides of this passage were illuminated with a faint blue light.
After a pause, the two of them walked in one after the other.
The direction of the passage was parallel, and they walked in silence, occasionally remaining alert to prevent any unexpected events from occurring on either side.
Senterman took out a special ribbon from his waist and put it on his wrist. The ribbon emitted a faint Red Light, and a subtle energy aura radiated from it.
Freya glanced at it and recognized that it was also a communication device; he probably intended to use it to test the range of the isolated Force Field.
The distance of the passage was not very long; after about ten minutes, they arrived at an intersection area.
Surrounding them, apart from the way they had come, were three passages leading in different directions. Two of these passages were pitch black, clearly indicating that the lighting equipment had been damaged.
A chilly breeze flowed in from the entrance of the passage, giving a cool sensation.
Freya cautiously looked at one of the dark passages and frowned.
"What’s wrong? Did you notice something?" Senterman asked as he observed Freya's expression and glanced toward that passage.
She raised her hand and pointed at the passage. "It seems like there’s something over there; it gives off a dangerous feeling."
"Dangerous?" Senterman casually raised his hand and slightly opened it. "Let me test it out."
Although Freya saved him once, Senterman still did not pay much attention to Freya, who was under the effect of a concealment spell. Even when a Crystalized Wizard was threatened upon entering the ruins, he merely thought that Freya was somewhat special beyond her vast knowledge.
However, Freya did not mind Senterman's attitude.
A swarm of thin Black Insects quickly flew out from between Senterman's outstretched hands, swirling toward the passage.
These insects, formed from Negative Energy and resentment, possessed strong offensive capabilities and could be controlled from a great distance, making them very useful for attacking, defending, or scouting.
This was an Empowerment Spell chosen by Senterman after he advanced to Second-Level Wizard. Coupled with the traits of his learned Advanced Meditation Method, the strength of these Deathly Insects, if fully unleashed, could rival even the top-tier Second-Level Sorcery.
This was also why he managed to survive during the manhunt.
Freya stood beside the door, using her mental sensing and the eyes of the King Cobra to continuously monitor the changes in the passage.
As soon as the Deathly Insects entered, the previously dangerous aura within the passage immediately surged.
Suddenly, a cacophony of mournful howls echoed from deep within the passage.
This sound caused Senterman, who was casting Collapse, to change his expression. He narrowed his eyes slightly and flicked his fingers.
With a whoosh, large swarms of Black Insects surged out from behind him, carrying a strong stench of decay as they rushed toward the passage.
The faint buzzing sound accompanied by roars continuously echoed from the passage, causing Freya to furrow her brow.
After a moment of thought, she took out a vial of black liquid from her waist pouch and shook it towards Senterman.
"Do you need assistance?"
Seeing the Negative Energy Essence in Freya's hand, Senterman shook his head.
"No, it's just a group of mutated zombies, probably former explorers who entered the ruins. I can handle them in two minutes, and I suspect there might be some good items inside."
"Alright." Freya nodded and put the liquid away.
Two minutes later.
The roars in the passage had completely subsided. Senterman, with a grim expression, retracted the remaining half of his Deathly Insects.
Although these insects were merely manifestations of Negative Energy, conjuring them still required mental strength. After being injured by Spirit and fainting, he had lost a hand, and clearing just one passage had taken a toll on him.
However, feeling that there was indeed no danger left, the two entered the passage.
As soon as they stepped inside, the strong stench of decay made Freya hold her breath. She quickly reached out to conjure a ball of green light to cover her nose and mouth, which made it somewhat bearable.
This foul odor was not only unpleasant but also carried slow-acting biological toxins that could infect even a wizard's constitution.
This is only true for Freya. The poison of being a Necromancer has no effect on Senterman's body at all.
Then, the flames summoned above their heads flickered as the two scanned their surroundings expressionlessly.
The ground, walls, and ceiling were splattered with a thin layer of black goo, and faint black smoke wafted down from above.
Soon, after passing through the corridor left by the battle and turning a few corners, they finally discovered a massive room.
In the center of the room lay a gigantic black stone coffin, covered with numerous dense runes that formed a coiled Black Serpent engraved on its top.
Besides the coffin, there were several stone platforms around the room.
However, when Freya saw the black pattern, her eyes suddenly brightened.
"Is this the mark of the Colbera King Snake?"
"The King Cobra? Isn't that what you mentioned before?" Senterman, who was inspecting one of the stone platforms, turned around and released a strand of Deathly Insects. "Do you want me to help you open it?"
"Sure." Freya nodded without pretense and stepped aside.
The King Cobra Mark on top was just a simple pattern without any energy aura, but for safety's sake, it was better to have Senterman check it out.
Under Senterman's control, the slender Deathly Insects quickly burrowed into the gaps of the coffin. Before long, the top of the coffin suddenly trembled and then shattered.
Inside the stone coffin lies a corpse resembling a mummy, with its hands crossed and dark eyes and mouth faintly revealing some fine Black Bugs inside.
In the crossed arms of the corpse is a black book, inscribed with ancient script that reads: Death Diary.
However, recalling the earlier example of Klyent, Freya did not directly pick it up but instead continued to probe the body with her mind.
She then discovered that a green Amber-style Amulet was hanging around the neck of the corpse.
This Amulet seemed to have retained its luster despite the passage of time, reflecting a faint glow under the light of the flames above.
It also emitted a slight familiar Bloodline Aura.
Sensing that aura, Freya frowned; it was actually the aura of a King Cobra, though it was so faint that it could not form a Bloodline.
She reached out and tore the Amulet from the corpse. Under the illumination of the flames, she saw that it contained a slender scale.
An almost invisible aura began to seep from the Amulet into her palm, gently tugging at her mastery of the King Cobra Legacy.
For a moment, Freya felt as if something special had been added to her body.
"Eh? Does it still possess spiritual essence after all this time?"
However, this aura was still too weak; for Freya, at least one drop of King Cobra blood would be needed to activate the inheritance.
Freya gently shook her head and put away the Amulet, glancing at the corpse.
"This guy seems to have been a legacy wizard of the King Cobra in life, but I wonder what caused his death."
The lifespan of a King Cobra is quite long; if we consider the normal span from birth to death, it could take tens of thousands of years.
Although the wizards inheriting from the King Cobra are not true King Cobras themselves, the Bloodline within them allows them to live for a thousand years.
The corpse in front of Freya appears not to have reached an old age, clearly indicating an unnatural death.
However, this also confirms that Shirley's detection was correct; there indeed had been traces of King Cobra in the Hester Ruins.
As Freya pondered over these matters, Senterman nearby seemed to have pressed a button.
A section of a grid slowly emerged from the top of one stone platform, containing some papers that appeared to be documents.
Moreover, due to their good preservation, these documents were not as weathered as other books, even surviving without significant deterioration from energy particles.
Upon seeing the documents, Senterman took them all out from the grid. After briefly scanning through them, a hint of a smile unconsciously appeared on his cold face.
"Unexpectedly..."
Before he could finish his sentence, the grid that had just risen suddenly fell back with a snap.
Suddenly, a dense buzzing sound filled the entire room, as if something was vibrating, and an unusual aura began to rise from the ground.
The two exchanged glances and then looked down at the floor.
Crack!
A pitch-black fissure opened up directly between them, revealing a faint golden light that seemed to be an eyeball.
Feeling the destructive aura emanating from the golden light, both of their faces immediately turned pale.
"Run!"
Without hesitation, Freya and Senterman dashed toward the door of the room.
As they left the room, numerous cracks rapidly spread across the floor. Before long, a multitude of soccer ball-sized Golden Eyeballs floated out from the fissures, numbering in the hundreds and turning the dark room into a golden hue.
These eyeballs were surrounded by countless fine tendrils that floated like soft fur.
The foremost eyeball scanned its surroundings, eventually locking onto the stone platform where the data had been taken.
Then, as if receiving some command, this swarm of eyeballs rushed toward the door with a speed that matched that of Freya and Senterman.
The two people running quickly sensed the dangerous presence closing in behind them, and their speed increased even more.
Freya looked at Senterman, whose expression was unusually serious, and coldly asked, "Do you know what that thing is behind us?"
At that moment, Senterman was rummaging through his belongings while running. After throwing something into the passage behind them, he finally had time to respond to Freya.
"It's an automatic guardian of the ruins. I encountered it in the Snowfield Ruins before. Its single-target attack can instantly kill all Second-Level Wizards, and even Third-Rank Wizards can suffer significant damage from it. It's very terrifying."
Being able to instantly kill a Second-Level Wizard made Freya feel a bit troubled.
However, before she could say anything else, the passage behind them exploded with a loud bang. (To be continued...)
