Chapter 287:
A flash of lightning streaked across the sky, followed by a deep rumble that slowly echoed through the air. The updates are coming in fast.
Before long, fine raindrops began to fall from the sky, creating a soft rustling sound as they hit the leaves.
Freya crouched in the grass, surrounded by a faint purple mist that swirled around her, absorbing the various natural scents she emitted.
The rain quickly soaked her robe, trickling down from her hood.
Suddenly, a gray squirrel jumped down from a nearby tree and scurried under her, seeking shelter from the rain.
Ignoring the creature beneath her, Freya squinted at the female mannequin not far away.
At this moment, the aura of the mannequin had become indistinguishable from her own over time; if it weren't for their different appearances, their spiritual presence was almost identical.
She believed that this remarkably lifelike mannequin could easily deceive Elgreen and his group of pursuers.
Time passed slowly as the rain showed no signs of letting up; if anything, it seemed to intensify.
Even Freya's leather boots were completely submerged in a puddle, and the squirrel that had been hiding could no longer tolerate the rain. It jumped into the grass and soon disappeared from sight.
Suddenly, amidst the sounds of rain in the distant forest, there came a faint sound of footsteps.
Freya's ears were suddenly filled with a crisp 'ding' sound, causing her spirit to jolt.
That was the Boundary Symbol Array she had set up around her.
Slowly, a glimmer of white light flashed in her eyes.
In her line of sight, a Tall Shadow dressed in a black Robe with a maple leaf-shaped badge pinned to its chest cautiously emerged from the forest.
In its right hand, it held a green Short Staff, occasionally stopping and moving, but its direction was toward her.
"Here it comes."
Seeing the Face that had appeared in the crystal ball earlier, Freya gently shook off the droplets of water from her Cross Sword, her expression becoming serious.
...
On the muddy forest path, the black ribbon used for tracking in front of Willy was fading more and more, yet it continued to extend into a nearby patch of grass.
He sniffed the damp air around him. Then he pulled out a silver pocket watch from behind and took a look at it before raising his finger lightly.
"Lord Raylin, I have identified a defector from the Benifin Family. It seems to be a Plant Energy wizard. Its strength is approximately at Liquefaction Level. I need assistance."
Soon, a blue glow flashed at his fingertips, and Reilin's deep voice came through the mark.
"Good. Swart is closest to that location. He will arrive in five minutes. You should probe first; remember the Secret Art of the Evil Crow Clan and keep in touch at all times."
"Understood."
He nodded lightly and slowly lowered his fingers.
Looking around, Willy turned and walked towards the large tree nearby.
He fished out a red seed from his waist pouch and extended his hand to press it against the tree.
A hissing sound echoed as if skin met a hot iron; the moment the seed touched the tree, it ignited and quickly merged into it.
Before long, with a loud crack, the spot where the seed had merged suddenly split open.
A Flame Treant emerged from within, and as it stepped out, the towering tree rapidly withered and turned yellow, soon completely dying.
"May I ask, what are your orders?" The Flame Treant bowed slightly, its voice deep and solemn.
"Go there." He pointed towards the area with the black floating ribbons and said calmly, "Kill all living beings you see."
"I understand."
The Flame Treant nodded slowly and took large strides towards that direction, soon stepping into the underbrush.
Not long after, a series of dull thuds and the roars of the Treant erupted from the bushes.
Then, bright red flames surged upward.
Willy felt the damage inflicted on Treant, revealing a look of realization.
"Hmph, it really is an ambush. The Flame Treant possesses the magical strength of a Vaporizing Sorcerer and has extremely high defense. I was just afraid you wouldn't show up!"
Boom!
Another muffled sound echoed as the massive flames burning around suddenly vanished.
It was as if they were extinguished by rain.
At the same time, a loud snap resonated in his mind, and the connection with Treant's spirit was instantly severed.
This caused his expression to darken, and an inexplicable sense of crisis enveloped his heart.
After hesitating for a moment, he suddenly reached for the Amulet at his chest.
Hiss...
A green Maple Leaf Pattern flashed from his forehead.
At that instant when the pattern appeared, a blue streak cut fiercely toward his back.
Clang!!!!
The enormous echo of metal clashing exploded in the forest, causing raindrops on the surrounding leaves to fall in a flurry.
"Who is it!!"
He suddenly turned his head, and two shadows immediately flew out from his hand, attacking behind him.
With two faint sounds of 'hiss, hiss,' everything fell silent.
Willy coldly stared in that direction, his palm quietly reaching for the amulet at his chest. Just now, that attack had actually shattered the advanced cursed item given to him by his teacher.
Slowly, he raised his fingertip, which still glowed with blue light.
"Lord Raylin, I have already engaged him in battle. My previous judgment was wrong; his strength is close to Crystallization Level. I—"
Before he could finish his sentence, a strong sense of danger suddenly came from above.
Without thinking further, he lowered his finger and abruptly raised the green short staff in his hand, loudly shouting the activation spell.
"Sahiva, Thorned Arm of Saleth, Sarether Thorned Arm!"
As he chanted the spell, the middle of the short staff suddenly cracked open, and a massive arm covered in green fur stretched out from it, reaching toward the direction he pointed.
Boom!!!
A powerful distorted force field erupted where the arm grasped, large swathes of green thin lines bizarrely constricting it tightly.
The violent force fields unleashed by the two powerful spells forced Willy to squint his eyes, feeling as if the short staff he tightly gripped might break free at any moment.
"Ha ha, as expected from a wizard of Elgreen Academy, you can see through the traps I've set and even withstand my two ambushes."
A crisp voice suddenly rang out.
In this chaotic Force Field, Freya, with her disheveled blonde hair, slowly walked out from behind. A layer of green wind surrounded her, preventing the residual destructive aura from the surrounding spells from colliding.
"You," Willy said coldly, stepping back two paces and looking up and down at Freya. His expression froze for a moment. He frowned and said, "You are not a member of the Benifin Family. Who exactly are you?!"
"Do you want to know?" Freya looked at the wizard of the same level as herself and revealed a slight smile. "Then defeat me first!"
Suddenly, her figure vanished.
Willy quickly pulled out a green seed from behind and scattered it around. At the same time, he recited a spell.
The seeds that were still drifting in the air instantly sprouted tender branches, intertwining to form a large mass of green vines that tightly protected him.
"Too slow!"
Freya's voice appeared above his head. She stretched out her palm, and five green Thin Lines shot out suddenly, while on the other side, a Cross Sword fiercely swung toward the vines that were trying to creep over.
With a series of light sounds, the green Thin Lines pierced through the vines' obstruction and struck Willy.
However, at this moment, apart from his head, Willy's entire body had turned into wood. The five Thin Lines striking him caused hardly any damage.
"Element Assimilation"
Seeing the changes in Willy, Freya frowned as she severed a green vine and clenched her palm.
With a tearing sound, the Thin Line embedded in his body suddenly split apart. A large amount of wood shavings flew up before slowly disappearing, and Willy's wooden body seemed to be cut open, leaning at an odd angle.
He let out a muffled groan, lightly tapping his fingers on the wound, but a slight green liquid still oozed from the corner of his mouth.
Meanwhile, Freya, who had retreated to a safe distance after the strike, looked at Willy, who was entangled and protected by numerous green vines, with a serious expression.
In just a few seconds, the massive damage inflicted had completely healed.
"It seems that your Element Assimilation ritual focuses on recovery, but it doesn't seem to be fully completed yet," she said slowly.
Element Assimilation is a method of self-enhancement that only Liquid Wizards are qualified to engage in.
However, wizards entering Element Assimilation usually have their own spiritual power significantly influenced by their magic.
For Freya at this moment, it was somewhat not worth the cost.
Without responding to her words, Willy snorted coldly and suddenly thrust his Short Staff into the ground.
A noticeable wave of Plant Energy emanated from the staff, and then his body actually extended numerous roots into the soil like a plant.
From a distance, Freya could clearly sense a sudden change in his aura.
Suddenly, she leaped up violently, leaving her original position.
"Whoosh!"
Several green roots burst from the ground where she had just stood, fiercely stabbing into the air.
The tips of those green roots glimmered with a metallic sheen and carried a fragrant floral scent, suggesting they also contained unknown toxins.
"Hmph, you actually forced me into this form. Although my Elemental Ritual is not fully completed, it should be enough to deal with you!"
His voice became unusually deep and slow, seemingly influenced by Element Assimilation.
"Is that so?"
Quickly dodging a series of root spikes beneath her feet, Freya narrowed her eyes slightly.
"It’s been a while since I used Enchantment-type magic. Fortunately, I specialize in Fire Element Enchantment. Let's see if I can cut through your roots!"
As she ran, she reached out and lightly flicked the Blade of her Cross Sword.
"Clang."
With a crisp sound, the originally normal silver Blade rapidly transformed into a fiery red color, then suddenly ignited into a red flame.
However, this flame flickered a few times before completely turning pitch black.
The black Flame clung to the Blade, radiating an extremely high temperature, causing the surrounding air to twist violently with the movement of the Blade.
This made Willy, who had just calmed down, suddenly change his expression.
"Damn it!" His body slowly sank, as if trying to burrow into the ground.
"Trying to run?"
A surge of green wind suddenly appeared beneath Freya, her already swift speed increasing once more.
The surrounding vines that attempted to block her couldn't even lock onto her figure; her physical qualities, now infused with the aura of a Great Knight, had long surpassed that of an ordinary Liquid Wizard.
The black Flame Cross Sword drew a long, twisted line in the air.
Freya's gaze sharpened.
In an instant, the Black Flame on the Cross Sword suddenly extended towards Willy's head.
"Blazing Edge!"
Willy, who was temporarily pinned to the ground and unable to evade, instinctively reached out his hand and shouted.
"You can't kill me!!"
A massive hand made of black soil mixed with various decaying vegetation reached out from behind him, grasping towards the Cross Sword that had transformed into a Black Flame spear.
"Ha!"
The Cross Sword transformed into a spear and fiercely pierced the Giant Hand, but it was quickly enveloped by countless clumps of soil. Even the burning Black Flame couldn't pierce through the Giant Hand for a moment.
However, just as the two spells were at a stalemate, Freya suddenly released her grip on the sword's hilt.
The voluntary abandonment of the spell caused her face to turn pale, and she slowly opened her palm.
A stream of azure wind rapidly gathered in her hand, forming an azure Long Scar.
Willy didn't expect Freya to suddenly give up on the spell; he could only raise his arm to shield his head.
"Thud."
A clear, fine line slowly cracked open from the top of his head.
With a loud crash, the Giant Hand, lacking spiritual support, instantly transformed back into soil and decayed leaves, scattering on the ground.
Freya stood in place, waving her hand to disperse the energy blade, expressionless as she looked at Willy, who had sunk halfway into the ground but had already lost his life.
After a moment's thought, she walked over to the corpse and gently flipped open his collar.
Soon, she pulled out a cracked green leaf-shaped Amulet from his chest.
"Saradin, so that's how it is," she revealed an understanding expression.
She immediately discarded the Amulet in her hand and then tore off the maple leaf badge from his chest. After glancing at the chaotic scene around her, she turned and left.
Meanwhile, similar battles were rapidly unfolding in other parts of the forest.
Not far from where Freya had left, a frail male wizard was sprinting through the forest, carrying a girl with bright red hair.
Behind them was a large mass of crows, dark and ominous.
The crows had crimson eyes and flew silently, creating an eerie atmosphere. Among the flock, Rand was watching the two escapees with a smile on his face.
"Reilin, my former friend, give up. The girl on your back has already fallen under my curse; within three days, she will become my puppet. Stop your futile resistance. Have you forgotten our friendship?"
His deep, hoarse voice seemed to have a special allure that made Reilin too afraid to look back.
"Heh heh, have you fallen for this ridiculous girl? Fallen for the one who killed your best friend's father?"
Rand's smile suddenly turned exceptionally sinister, and a strong aura of danger erupted from him.
