Lilian also saw Freya, clearly taken aback.
"Lilian?" Freya looked at her visibly haggard face, slightly furrowing her brows.
"Freya."
Seeing her former friend, Lilian forced a smile on her pale face, but anyone could see the stiffness in it.
Freya scanned Lilian from head to toe, noting that she still held the rank of Second-Class Apprentice. However, compared to when she left the academy, Lilian now appeared somewhat disheveled; Freya could clearly see a hidden patch on what was once a pristine Apprentice Robe.
"What happened to you? By the way, where's Kaidy? Isn't he with you? Could it be..."
Looking at Lilian all alone and recalling the recent Wizard War, Freya suddenly thought of a possibility.
"No, Kaidy is fine." Seeing the look in Freya's eyes, Lilian shook her head. She raised her hand to show a simple ring on her ring finger, smiling with a hint of happiness. "By the way, we got married, although it was private and no one was informed."
"Married?" Seeing the silver ring, Freya knew Kaidy liked Lilian but didn't expect them to have gotten married so quickly during her absence.
Moreover, Freya was puzzled as to why they had a private wedding and why Lilian had become so worn out; something must have happened between them.
Perhaps Freya's expression of confusion was too obvious, but Lilian did not wait for her to ask.
"Kaidy failed in his attempt to become an Official Wizard. It happened last month when the war calmed down. Fortunately, he only lost some vitality and there was no immediate Life Threat. However, due to the excessive consumption of his potential, he will never be able to advance to Official Wizard again."
Her voice was very calm, as if this matter were quite ordinary for her.
But Freya was taken aback; she hadn't expected something so serious to happen to Kaidy. Although Lilian described it plainly, she understood the severity of not being able to challenge for wizard status again.
The overexpenditure of mental potential and vitality was not merely about losing some life force; it likely came with serious repercussions. Lilian seemed unwilling to elaborate further.
Moreover, she knew how most families in the academy treated outsiders. Once someone lost their potential, they were either neglected or forced to remain at the bottom for life. For someone like Lilian, who belonged to a prominent family, their relationship would likely be severed entirely.
However, Lilian had secretly married the other person, and it seemed that something unpleasant had happened between them in the Lilian Family.
Freya slightly pursed her lips, looking at Lilian, who appeared to have matured and become more weathered. After a moment of thought, she spoke up.
"What are your plans for the future?"
"Well, Kaidy and I plan to leave here by boat and live a normal life in an area without wizards," Lilian replied with a smile. "I came to the library to make some preparations for our future, but I didn't expect to run into you. Originally, we intended not to tell anyone."
"Living a normal life," Freya nodded in understanding. "That sounds good."
Normal people have a sense of awe towards wizards of Transcendence. Lilian and Kaidy would surely manage to live in the world of ordinary people, and perhaps this was their best choice.
However, Kaidy's situation made Freya feel somewhat emotional. A strange sentiment filled her heart; this world was inherently cruel. Once faced with problems, one could easily be shattered into pieces. Her own ascension to wizardry was approaching as well, and if she failed, everything would be erased. Even if she survived, her fate would likely be similar to that of Kaidy.
In a daze, she suddenly thought of her family far across the sea. With the mysterious and splendid landscapes of this world, if she failed, she might not even have the chance to return. Therefore, no matter what! She had to succeed!
Faintly, a hidden determination began to show in her azure eyes.
Afterward, the two chatted casually as they had when they first met, without any sense of awkwardness.
Three short hours later, Freya watched Lilian's slender figure walk out of the library, holding a piece of paper with an address on it—the place where they decided to settle down.
As Lilian was leaving, Freya also gave her some Magic Stones and other items as a belated wedding gift.
Although Freya currently had enough Magic Stones, she remained just a Third-Rank Apprentice without any background; all she could offer were material things.
With a gentle sigh and a feeling of emptiness in her heart, Freya solemnly put the address back into her waist pouch. The city where Lilian and Kaidy would settle was far away—almost as distant as her hometown.
If nothing unexpected happened, Freya estimated that this would be the last time she saw Lilian.
After briefly calming her emotions, her gaze shifted back to the bookshelf.
Three hours later.
In the Dis Forest, around noon, the scorching sun baked the earth, but was blocked by the dense trees.
There was not a whisper of wind in the forest; the humid and oppressive climate made even the predators reluctant to hunt at this time.
On a rugged path through the woods, a sudden sound of chaotic and hurried hoofbeats echoed.
Thud, thud, thud.
Six black steeds were galloping swiftly, kicking up large amounts of decaying leaves along the way. The riders wore gray robes, with only their hands exposed; the rest of their bodies were concealed within the gray fabric, their faces oddly blurred and indistinct.
This was a group led by James.
The deliberately chosen black stallions were incredibly fast even in the forest.
After ten minutes, the six stopped at a fork in the road.
James pulled on the reins to turn his horse at the junction and turned back to a figure in a gray robe holding a silver plate. He spoke softly, “Ellen, can you sense any traces of the convoy here?”
“I’ve already sensed it,” Ellen replied, glancing at the silver plate with a slight frown. “However, that convoy seems to have some interference. My spell can only detect that there is a convoy; I cannot pinpoint its exact location or timing.”
“Hmm, it seems to be a wizard's convoy,” James nodded and looked at the others. “Does anyone have a reconnaissance spell? One that can provide visual synchronization?”
No one spoke up. Freya scanned the group and said, “I’ve studied it; I can do it.”
“Alright then, thank you for your help.” James tugged on the reins and cleared the way.
A black seed was taken out by Freya and placed in her palm. She gently tapped it and then tossed it directly at the fork in the road.
As soon as the black seed touched the ground, it took root and began to grow. Before long, a fist-sized, green, round creature emerged.
This creature had short limbs but lacked a nose and mouth, possessing only a large Cyclops eye on its head and two palm-sized tender leaves.
Freya looked at this creature and pointed; one of the tender leaves on top of its head flew automatically into her hand.
The creature then quickly burrowed underground and soon vanished without a trace.
"Plant Energy's Scouting Technique, along with the ability to create a mental barrier? Quite impressive. Is it modified?" Thomas, tall with dark skin, asked curiously as he watched the creature disappear.
"That's right," Freya nodded in acknowledgment. "However, while it has the ability for mental isolation and visual synchronization, its range is limited to one kilometer, which is not as good as some other Scouting Techniques."
"A short range is a drawback, but it's still decent; after all, Plant Energy isn't specialized in this area," Thomas agreed with a nod.
Without responding to him, Freya felt the distance of the plant seed and directly put the tender leaf in her mouth, chewing it briefly before swallowing.
"Trusai Kuna, become my eyes!"
The simplified incantation was uttered, and her originally blue eyes instantly turned green. Freya's expression also became somewhat vacant.
Through an invisible mental channel, large amounts of black soil swiftly passed by. However, this process did not last long; soon light filled her entire field of vision.
After slightly adjusting to the change in light, the plant seed finally settled in a hidden thicket.
This was the maximum range; if she went any further, visual synchronization would be affected to some extent.
Through the transplanted eyes atop the seed, Freya saw that the colors were somewhat distorted. In her view, all green plants appeared dark gray, while she was particularly sensitive to sunlight, causing her to frown slightly while riding on horseback.
'The Black-Eyed Beast's vision actually has such flaws. Next time I'll try the Azure-Tailed Weasel's eyes.'
The eyes were hastily replaced; this was her first synchronization, and imperfections were inevitable. However, at this moment, it was sufficient.
Others looked at Freya's appearance in silence. A few of them tacitly dismounted their horses and began to take out various items from their waist pouches or bags to set up Spell traps.
This fork in the road was the only way to Hurricane Fortress. Unless something unexpected happened, the carriage would definitely pass through here.
The Will Brothers, along with Thomas and James, were using special black stone rods to form a unique magic circle, while Marina from the biology department walked into the nearby forest for reasons unknown.
Time slowly passed, and the sun gradually rose to its highest point.
After waiting for nearly twenty minutes, Freya suddenly spotted three White Carriages slowly approaching in the distance.
The driver of the foremost carriage was a middle-aged man dressed in Leather Armor. Beside the carriage lay a somewhat damaged Broad Sword. Although his appearance was ordinary, Freya immediately recognized that this middle-aged man was a skilled expert based on his unconscious demeanor and movements.
In addition to the driver, there were several accompanying horses beside the three carriages. Among them, the person riding the last horse was a young man dressed in a red Noble Attire, with a somewhat arrogant expression. (To be continued)
