On the way ahead, Freya did not encounter any more dangerous creatures.
Ten minutes later, at the end of the winding path, a wooden house appeared in her sight.
The house was quite simple and looked gray and dull, but on the only door, there was an engraving of a maple leaf, which seemed somewhat out of place.
"It’s the academy's emblem. It seems this is Rand's resting point."
Freya glanced around the house's surroundings, confirming there was nothing obstructive before she sheathed her dagger back into her boot and walked straight toward the house.
Creak.
A grinding sound came from the door as Freya lightly knocked to shake off the dust before opening it.
Upon opening the door, a faint scent of decaying wood wafted out. Freya noticed that the floor was covered with a layer of white ash, indicating that this resting point had been abandoned for quite some time.
In the center of the room was a pile of ashes from a campfire that had merged with the dust on the ground.
Aside from that, there was nothing else.
Freya frowned slightly at the white ash beneath her feet. She stomped lightly, and Azure Wind swept across the ground, blowing away both the ash and the remnants of the fire outside in no time.
Seeing the ground become much cleaner, Freya stepped inside.
The space in the house wasn't very large, but it was more than enough to accommodate seven people comfortably.
Freya gently opened the window to let in the breeze from outside, dispersing the musty odor.
At this moment, the sun was slowly setting in the west, casting a warm glow over the distant hazy forest that had a special beauty to it.
Freya stood quietly by the window, gazing into the distance. As she got closer to Abyssal Lake, a faint scent of sulfur began to emerge.
"The Abyssal Lake is constantly boiling due to a river of magma from a volcanic pathway beneath it. As a result, apart from some special Fire Element demonized fish, there are no other creatures in the lake. The geothermal energy produced underground has led to the presence of many Fire Element Demonized Creatures and plants here, making it a resource point within the academy. After this mission, I hope to collect some resources to exchange for Magic Stones."
Freya waited, feeling bored and thinking about trivial matters.
Although the reward for this mission was as much as ten Magic Stones, it was still too little for her current situation. Even though she had already mastered two Zero-Level Spells, she still needed external means to enhance her mental power, which was gradually stagnating.
"It seems that the Lilian Family specializes in potions. If I buy from them, it might be cheaper than in the Trading Area. Preliminary estimates suggest that my mental power will completely stagnate at the nineteenth rune. If I don't gather enough Magic Stones by then, I'll have to rely on that Energy Gathering Array... However, once I advance to Third-Rank Apprentice, the issues regarding Magic Stones should ease up a bit."
Just as Freya was feeling troubled about her financial situation, she heard chaotic footsteps outside the wooden cabin.
Several familiar figures in Gray Robes walked down the path.
Seeing Freya inside the cabin, Rand, who was leading the group, waved at her.
"How's it going? Did you encounter any danger?" he called out loudly.
"No," Freya replied.
Soon, everyone entered the cabin.
After looking around a bit, Lal wrinkled his nose slightly, likely catching a whiff of the lingering smell of decaying wood.
"This place is really shabby," he said lightly as he tapped on the wooden wall, producing a crisp sound.
"There's nothing we can do about it; this is the only resting point at Abyssal Lake provided by the academy. Although it's a bit crude, it's still better than camping outside in the woods," Rand said helplessly.
"Well, I've slept outside before during missions," Nikola comforted himself.
Apart from Freya and Lena in Aishebun's arms, everyone else had family backgrounds. Although they were dissatisfied with the shabby living conditions of the cabin, they didn't voice any complaints.
The sun, which had originally been slanting to the west, was gradually disappearing from the sky, and the colors outside were slowly darkening.
Rand glanced at the sky that was about to be enveloped by night, then turned back and said, "Alright, it's getting late. Let's all gather some firewood. Although the temperature here is higher than in other places, it still gets quite cold at night. Lal, why don't you go around and see if you can catch some game for dinner?"
"Okay," Lal nodded and walked out of the house.
The others also went outside to collect firewood.
As she was leaving, Freya glanced back at Aishebun and Lena, who seemed to be whispering to each other. She noticed that these two hadn't stopped talking the entire way.
Aside from a few initial exchanges with them, Aishebun had spent all this time with Lena.
Freya could only shake her head slightly; after all, Aishebun was the employer, and what he chose to do was not something others could interfere with.
Soon, the firewood was piled in the center of the house.
Under the darkening night, a bright bonfire filled the room with warmth.
A thick blanket was spread around the bonfire for everyone to sit on.
Rand took out metal rods from his pack and began assembling a simple rack to place over the fire. He then took two plump rabbits that Lal had prepared and placed them on the rack, sprinkling them with seasoning.
Meanwhile, Lani was moving around the cabin, evenly spreading a circle of black powder. A faint aura of energy emanated from that powder.
Freya knew that it was Screaming Dust used for alerting; if anything unusual occurred within a certain range, it would immediately emit a scream as a warning.
Watching their skilled movements, it seemed they had developed these habits from working together on missions for a long time.
Freya, having nothing to do, took out the prepared food from her package and placed it on the shelf to heat up.
Before long, the aroma of the food filled the entire room.
No one spoke; they simply ate quietly.
Freya gently tore off a piece of the golden-brown roasted rabbit meat and ate it with bread.
Outside, white mist gradually began to rise, and a cool breeze blew in through the cracks of the window, causing the burning campfire to flicker slightly before settling back into calmness.
This sudden cool breeze made Freya, who was eating, shiver slightly, and goosebumps appeared on her exposed neck.
It seemed that this chill brought a vague sense of heaviness to her heart.
‘Creak…’
A faint sound came from the window, prompting her to instinctively look outside.
To her surprise, she saw a familiar pale face hanging against the dark backdrop of the window, with pitch-black eyes devoid of any whites, staring at her motionlessly. (To be continued)
