From this brief exchange, Freya could tell that Master Lisa had a gentle personality and seemed easy to talk to.
However, even so, she had no intention of trying to cling to her. Although Freya had signed a mentor contract with Lisa, it was essentially just a simple teacher-student relationship. Aside from gaining access to some discounted knowledge and materials from her, it didn't have much relevance to others.
There were no shortcuts on the path of a wizard; progress could only be made through continuous effort and accumulation. This was what Hegel had told her during their carriage ride when she was leaving.
As she walked along the path marked for the dormitory area, she took out the handbook she received from Lisa and examined it closely.
The pages were filled with various subjects and their class schedules. In addition to the basic subjects, there were also many advanced courses. Although both required payment, the advanced subjects required a different form of currency called 'Magic Stone,' while the basic subjects required gold coins.
'Magic Stone?' Freya frowned slightly, realizing that this item called Magic Stone seemed to be a currency used by wizards, but she knew nothing about it.
She continued flipping through the handbook and found at the end the exchange rate between Magic Crystal and gold coins, which was astonishingly one to ten thousand.
This meant that one needed ten thousand gold coins to exchange for a single Magic Stone, causing Freya to break into a slight sweat.
She saw that even the lowest fee courses required one Magic Stone.
"I only have a little over three thousand gold coins in total. Thankfully, I have the advantage of free learning for three years; otherwise... I just don't know if there's a way to earn Magic Stones here. But since I've just entered the academy, I have plenty of time to think about it. What I need now is to start with the most basic subjects."
After pondering for a moment, she quickly confirmed her current goal.
About ten minutes later, following the signs and directions, she finally found her assigned room.
Compared to the frighteningly high tuition fees, the apprentice rooms arranged by the academy were quite standard.
After taking a quick glance around the room, she placed the items from her package on the table. First, she opened the received parcel and began to check the contents.
Neatly folded was a Gray Robe, an ordinary Black Iron Ring, a red tag, and a small transparent glass Test Tube filled with a light blue liquid.
Freya took the Test Tube out of the package and gently shook it. The light blue liquid instantly turned pink, and after another shake, it changed back to blue.
"Stabilizing Mind Potion," Freya read aloud the label on the Test Tube. "Its main effect is to stabilize mental strength, with side effects: prolonged mental excitement after use."
Just by glancing at it, Freya knew that this potion might be used for her advancement. Although she was still only a First-Class Apprentice, her progress had been rapid in the early stages. During her time on the ship, she had slowly begun to explore the fifteenth rune, though it was still not very stable.
However, even so, the energy particles in the air were gradually improving her physical condition under her control.
It seemed that after some time, she would break through to Second-Class Apprentice. This potion would then become useful.
After carefully putting the potion back, she took out the Black Iron Ring meant for communication.
The completely black ring had no patterns or designs; however, Freya sensed a hint of Energy Particles emanating from it. She lightly touched its surface, feeling a rough texture. In Freya's eyes, this ring bore heavy signs of mass production.
After playing with it for a while, she slipped it onto her index finger.
Finally, she took out Hegel's box and opened it.
Inside lay an ordinary White Mask, about the size of a face.
Freya took the heart out of the box. The mask was very light, and she couldn't tell what material it was made of. As she gently touched the mask, its soft texture surprisingly felt a bit warm, almost like real skin.
This piqued Freya's curiosity, as she had no other reactions besides the strange sensations it conveyed; she couldn't even sense any faint Energy Particles.
"However, since Hegel can deal with an Official Wizard, it must not be as ordinary as it appears," Freya speculated as she placed the mask back into the box.
Aside from the unclear function of what Hegel provided, Freya had examined everything else and understood their purposes.
After putting everything back in its place, Freya changed out of her casual clothes and into a gray Apprentice Robe.
She decided to take a walk to familiarize herself with the areas she would frequently visit in the future.
After all, this would be a place where she would live and study for a long time.
Locking the door, Freya wandered aimlessly through this still somewhat unfamiliar place, following the signs.
The architectural style of Elgreen Academy was predominantly black, giving off a Gothic vibe reminiscent of a past life.
The massive buildings were tall and slender, most featuring pointed roofs that created a subtle sense of oppression.
The air was hazy; even at noon, the sun hanging above only revealed a faint white halo.
Walking along the road paved with Blackstone, she could see many young people dressed in similar attire. However, compared to Freya, most of them appeared quite hurried. Although they were walking, their pace resembled running, and each carried one or two books to varying degrees.
Freya merely raised an eyebrow, having gained a slight understanding of the tense learning atmosphere at the academy.
Soon, following the signs, she found the Teaching Area, Dining Area, Laboratory Area, Garden, Library, Practice Room, and Trading Area.
After some time, having grasped the general layout, Freya returned to her room.
The scale of Elgreen Academy was immense; even after wandering for an hour, she had only seen less than half of the academy.
However, aside from familiarizing herself with commonly used areas, she surprisingly discovered a place to send letters within the academy. Of course, sending one to Dragon Harbor was out of the question.
Freya thought of Fran Sith, whom she had met on the ship.
With over a dozen interactions, she had a fairly good impression of Fran Sith; he seemed like someone worth getting to know better. Moreover, he was a member of the Elk Wizard Family, possessing knowledge and insights far beyond her reach. During their time on the ship, he had also subtly shown an interest in befriending her.
The distance between them was not great at all; they could easily communicate through letters.
"Keeping in touch can't hurt," Freya murmured as she took out paper and a pen.
...
In the following days, Freya followed the same routine as other newcomers: attending free Basic Knowledge classes in the Teaching Area and searching for the books she needed in the Library.
Since she had chosen the Positive Energy Principle subject with Master Lisa earlier, most of her searches were for similar or related books.
For example, the application and storage of Plant Energy and Energy Particles, the principles and structural analysis of Spell Models, linguistics, and the principles of mental power development, etc.
However, Freya discovered through her studies that the knowledge gained from gold coins and that learned from Magic Stones are not on the same level. In her words, while basic subjects are useful to her, when it comes to knowledge involving true principles, she still needs those paid subjects.
Like a pyramid, the accumulation of Basic Knowledge is merely a better foundation for higher-level concepts.
The release of a Spell is complex. On the premise of primarily using mental power to outline the Spell Model, it also requires a deep analysis of the principles of the Spell. This includes how many Energy Particles are guided by the Spell Model, the consumption of mental power, and what factors influence the estimated power against a target after release. Only by mastering all these aspects can one correctly grasp this Spell.
The vast amount of knowledge that Freya is learning pertains to the principles of Spell formation.
This involves an extremely broad range of topics, with some special Spells even including elements from metaphysics and other Dimensions.
Most of this knowledge requires payment, except for a small portion.
Therefore, as time goes by, Basic Knowledge has gradually become insufficient for Freya. (To be continued)
