The next morning, Chen Shuhua insisted on completing the discharge procedures despite the doctor's advice. Tu Shen arrived at Chen Shuhua's hospital room with a brown paper bag, his expression serious.
"This is your wife's diary, and also..." Tu Shen took out a necklace from the bag. The silver chain was adorned with a heart-shaped pendant engraved with the names "Chen Shuhua & Chen Lily."
Chen Shuhua trembled as he took the necklace, gripping it tightly in his palm while the diary slipped onto the pristine white sheets. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and struggled to control his emotions.
"I have applied for a search warrant. This afternoon, we will go to that factory together; perhaps we can find new clues," Tu Shen said.
Chen Shuhua nodded silently. He opened the diary and flipped through its yellowed pages, revealing his wife's elegant handwriting.
"Today is our wedding anniversary. Chen Shuhua gave me a necklace, and I really like it..."
"Today, Chen Shuhua worked overtime again. He said there’s a difficult case lately and hopes to finish it soon..."
"Today I had a nightmare; I dreamed that Chen Shuhua was covered in blood, lying on the ground..."
...
Every line of the diary revealed his wife's deep love for Chen Shuhua, making his heart ache as if pricked by needles. He turned to the last page and found the handwriting hurried and messy, as if written in haste.
"Today I noticed that Chen Shuhua seems to be hiding something from me. He has been absent-minded lately and answers calls mysteriously..."
"I decided to follow Chen Shuhua to see what he is really doing..."
"Oh my God, what did I see? Chen Shuhua... he is with a strange woman..."
The diary abruptly ended here, causing Chen Shuhua's heart to sink heavily as an ominous premonition surged within him.
"Could it be..." Chen Shuhua suddenly looked up at Tu Shen, "Did my wife discover something?"
Tu Shen paused for a moment before speaking solemnly: "We found a secret room in the factory; inside..."
"What is inside?" Chen Shuhua asked anxiously.
Tu Shen took a deep breath and slowly said, "Inside, there is a Surgical Table, and also..."
"What else?" Chen Shuhua's heart raced; he sensed that what Tu Shen was about to say would be an incredibly cruel truth.
"...there is your wife's phone," Tu Shen said with difficulty, unable to look Chen Shuhua in the eyes.
Chen Shuhua felt darkness envelop him, his mind going blank.
He slumped helplessly into a chair, his hands hanging limply at his sides. The necklace slipped from his palm and fell to the floor with a crisp sound. Seeing this, Tu Shen reached out to help him but was pushed away by Chen Shuhua.
"Don't touch me!" Chen Shuhua shouted hoarsely. He struggled to stand up and staggered to the window, looking out at the overcast sky, pain and anger swirling in his eyes.
"Why? Why?!" Chen Shuhua murmured in agony, unable to accept this cruel reality. Why did his wife have to suffer such a fate? Why was he completely unaware?
Tu Shen watched Chen Shuhua's suffering with a heavy heart. He understood Chen Shuhua's feelings but knew that now was not the time for sorrow.
"Chen Shuhua, I know you are very upset right now, but we have many things to do," Tu Shen said as he walked over to Chen Shuhua and spoke in a low voice. "We need to find the murderer and avenge your wife!"
Chen Shuhua suddenly turned around, fury igniting in his eyes. "Yes, revenge! I will make those beasts pay!"
In the afternoon, Chen Shuhua and Tu Shen drove to the abandoned factory located on the outskirts of Flower Town. The area was overgrown with weeds, and the walls were mottled, exuding an eerie atmosphere.
"This is it," Tu Shen pointed at the factory entrance and said. "Let's go inside."
Without a word, Chen Shuhua pushed open the heavy iron door, and a foul odor assaulted his senses, making him feel nauseous. The interior of the factory was dimly lit, filled with discarded machinery and clutter, making it even more sinister and terrifying.
The two of them cautiously entered the factory, carefully searching every corner in hopes of finding more clues. They made their way deep into the factory and discovered a locked iron door.
"It seems this is the secret room," Chen Shuhua said, pointing at the iron door.
Tu Shen nodded, pulled a pair of pliers from his waist, and forcefully cut through the iron chain. The iron door slowly opened, and a heavy smell of blood rushed out, making it hard to breathe.
Inside the secret room was only a Surgical Table and a few dim lights. The Surgical Table still bore dark stains of blood, sending chills down their spines. Chen Shuhua immediately spotted a mobile phone on the ground next to the Surgical Table; it was his wife's phone.
He walked over and picked up the phone. The screen was shattered, but he could still see a photo of himself with his wife. Chen Shuhua tightly gripped the phone, his nails digging deep into his palm, filled with grief and self-blame.
"Chen Lily..." Chen Shuhua whispered his wife's name, tears silently streaming down his face.
"Chen Shuhua, look!" Tu Shen suddenly shouted, pointing at a hidden compartment beneath the Surgical Table.
Chen Shuhua hurried over and opened the compartment with Tu Shen. Inside lay a black leather case secured with a combination lock.
"What do you think is inside?" Tu Shen asked.
"Let's open it and find out," Chen Shuhua said, taking a deep breath to calm himself. He carefully examined the combination lock and suddenly had an idea, recalling the wedding anniversary mentioned in his wife's diary.
"It's our wedding anniversary!" Chen Shuhua exclaimed excitedly as he quickly entered the date, and the combination lock clicked open.
