Although these Scarecrows are quite similar and their differences are hard to discern, Lingfeng unexpectedly discovered something peculiar about one of the rice Scarecrows after reaching the central area.
In fact, when Lingfeng heard Kehua mention activating the Spell on the Scarecrow, it became clear that the Scarecrow must possess a certain amount of Spiritual Energy. Moreover, Lingfeng noticed not only the Spiritual Energy on the Scarecrow but also something strange about it. One of the Scarecrows standing in the middle had its right hand shaped like five fingers. Typically, rice Scarecrows do not have hands; they are entirely made of Straw.
Lingfeng felt a sense of joy but was surprised that this difference was so easy to find. He then shouted towards the outside, "I found a Scarecrow with five-fingered hands!"
At that moment, Kehua, who was standing outside, was watching Lingfeng. Upon hearing Lingfeng's words, Kehua smiled slightly and began to chant an Incantation with his palms together. Suddenly, the rice Scarecrow started to sway, and its limbs began to stretch.
This bizarre phenomenon truly amazed Lingfeng. In astonishment, he quietly hid at a distance to observe what would happen next.
The Scarecrow seemed to be given life; after stretching its limbs, it slowly began to step forward. It appeared as if a screw was installed in its neck, allowing its head to turn 360 degrees!
"Is this Kehua's Spell? How frightening!" Lingfeng thought while hiding in the shadows.
The rice Scarecrow seemed quite clever; after taking a few steps forward, it stopped and looked in Lingfeng's direction. It appeared to have already detected Lingfeng's presence and slowly started walking towards him.
"It seems it has found me!" Lingfeng thought and quietly retreated again, then circled around to the back of the Scarecrow.
However, to Lingfeng's surprise, the Scarecrow turned its head again, and a mocking smile appeared on its grotesque face. Then its body shot forward like an arrow towards Lingfeng.
"Is this really a Scarecrow?" Lingfeng was horrified; the Scarecrow's limbs were too stiff, resembling a walking corpse.
Lingfeng glanced around and spotted a densely packed area of Scarecrows. He bent down and ran toward it.
In an instant, the Scarecrow reached the spot where Lingfeng had been before. Its right arm suddenly swung forcefully, revealing a long sword hidden within its straw arm, which instantly split Lingfeng's previous cover in half.
"This is too bizarre! With such sensitivity, how could I possibly evade it unless I can use force to take it down!" Lingfeng thought. However, looking at Kehua anxiously watching him, he realized that if he made even the slightest sound now, the Scarecrow would likely kill him. He never expected that avoiding this Scarecrow would be far more dangerous than playing hide-and-seek.
Seeing the Scarecrow hesitate, Lingfeng quickly took the opportunity to shout at Kehua, "Senior Brother, can I attack it?"
Before Kehua could respond, the Scarecrow flew up again, charging towards Lingfeng's hiding spot. However, it missed as Lingfeng had already changed positions.
"No, your task is to avoid its attacks!" Kehua replied.
Lingfeng gritted his teeth; after crouching for so long, his knees were starting to feel numb.
"Why can't I get any hints!" Lingfeng silently complained.
"Whoosh!" The Scarecrow soared into the air again, but this time it did not head towards Lingfeng; instead, it landed in front of another Scarecrow next to him. Then came a scraping sound as the head of the Scarecrow beside Lingfeng fell to the ground.
Lingfeng dared not linger, but at that moment, the Scarecrow was right beside him. If he moved carelessly, he would surely be discovered. Thinking quickly, Lingfeng dug out a clump of dirt and threw it into the distance.
The dirt hit a distant Scarecrow, producing a subtle rustling sound. Sure enough, the Scarecrow lunged towards the noise, and immediately its sword emitted a wave of sword energy, slicing through all the nearby Scarecrows in half.
"This method works well!" Seeing this, Lingfeng was inspired and quickly dug out several more clumps of dirt, throwing them one after another into the distance.
Unfortunately for those immobile Scarecrows, they were all cut in half. Before long, a clear area had opened up in the distance.
"It seems this enchanted Scarecrow is not so formidable!" Lingfeng felt somewhat relieved and then changed his position.
The casting Scarecrow moved among the fallen ones, making continuous spell-casting sounds. It was precisely these sounds that caused the other Scarecrow to lose its ability to determine Lingfeng's location.
"You have passed the first stage; the second stage is to assassinate that Scarecrow without using any weapons you possess. You must utilize other available objects!" Kehua's voice rang out again.
Lingfeng exhaled deeply as if granted amnesty and stood up confidently. He casually picked up several pieces of straw from the ground and then shot them towards the Scarecrow.
The Straw had become somewhat soft after years of exposure to the elements, but unexpectedly, after Lingfeng launched them, the Straws flew straight ahead. Moreover, there was not a single sound of air being sliced, which surprised Kehua.
"Whoosh~~!" The Straws instantly pierced through the Scarecrow's head, producing a muffled sound, and to everyone's astonishment, the Scarecrow's skull was actually penetrated by the Straws!
Lingfeng felt a surge of joy, thinking that this would cause the Scarecrow's Spiritual Energy to leak out, thus completing his mission.
However, to his surprise, the Scarecrow's head did not emit even a trace of Spiritual Energy. The Straws seemed to have no effect on the Scarecrow at all.
"What kind of monstrous thing is this?" Lingfeng exclaimed in disbelief.
Lingfeng had intended to deliver a fatal blow, but unexpectedly, not only did he fail to inflict any damage on the Scarecrow, but he also exposed his own position.
Kehua seemed to break into a cold sweat, rendered speechless by surprise. On one hand, he was astonished by Lingfeng's power; on the other hand, Lingfeng's exposure could lead to significant danger.
Lingfeng quickly calmed himself and thought through his options. Before the Scarecrow could launch an attack, he casually smiled and summoned a Firecracker from Xuanji.
The Scarecrow seemed to sense Lingfeng's movement and immediately spread its arms wide, performing a motion reminiscent of a great roc spreading its wings as it flew toward Lingfeng.
Yet Lingfeng remained standing there, casually grabbing a handful of hay. He blew on the Firecracker and saw a spark ignite; the hay in his hand was already lit.
The Scarecrow was merely controlled by a Spell and had no awareness of life or death. Seeing the flames, it did not dodge but continued flying straight toward Lingfeng.
"Take this!" Lingfeng shouted and then scattered the hay in his hand. With a flick of his wrist, the hay shot out like arrows aimed at the Scarecrow.
The Scarecrow was struck by the hay and paused momentarily. Soon after, flames ignited within its body from the burning hay, transforming it into a fiery figure.
"Haha, I did it!" The Scarecrow's body fell weakly to the ground and ignited the hay scattered around. Then came more flames from the Scarecrow itself. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Lingfeng returned to Kehua's side and excitedly shouted as he watched the fiery scene unfold in front of him.
Kehua wiped away a cold sweat, looking at the blazing grass field, and gave Lingfeng a stiff smile, saying, "Yes, you passed, but big trouble is coming!"
"Big trouble?" Lingfeng asked, confused.
Kehua sighed and said, "For such a long time, no one thought to use fire to attack Scarecrow; you are truly the first. However, this place has turned into a mess, and it looks like you'll have to clean it up!"
"Ah~~!" Lingfeng was instantly petrified, glancing at the still-spreading flames and regretting his actions.
After practicing for most of the night, Lingfeng was utterly exhausted. Once he returned to the Demon Cultivation Hall, he lay down on his bed and fell asleep. However, to avoid oversleeping the next morning, he told Major Servant to wake him up.
Sure enough, early the next morning, Major Servant pushed open Lingfeng's door.
Lingfeng was still sprawled out on the bed, completely oblivious to the pain from the hard bed board beneath him.
"Senior Brother, Senior Brother?" Major Servant called softly.
Lingfeng mumbled in response, turned over, and went back to sleep.
Seeing Lingfeng's actions, Major Servant was both amused and exasperated. After thinking for a moment, he patted the bed board and shouted, "You're late! The Master of the Demon Cult is going to punish you!"
"Ah~~!" This tactic proved effective; as soon as Major Servant's words fell, Lingfeng covered his backside and sat up. However, after looking around, he only saw Major Servant standing at the bedside, unable to hold back his laughter.
"Ouch!" Lingfeng slumped back onto the bed like a wilted eggplant, still in shock as he said, "You can trick people too now!"
Major Servant shrugged and innocently spread his hands. "What can I do? You were sleeping too soundly. I called you several times, but you didn't wake up!"
Lingfeng rubbed his eyes and took the towel from Major Servant's hand, asking, "Is everyone downstairs?"
"No!" Major Servant replied. "I gave them medicine yesterday and found their injuries quite severe. I estimate they can't even get out of bed right now." After a pause, he leaned in mysteriously to Lingfeng's ear and said, "Compared to them, you're really lucky. You even have the Assassin Hall Master giving you Flower Essence, while they only used some ordinary Healing Ointment!"
Lingfeng smiled proudly and patted his backside without hesitation, saying, "This Flower Essence is indeed very effective; it doesn't hurt anymore!"
Then, Lingfeng followed Major Servant to the hall. Stretching lazily and looking at the sunlight outside, Lingfeng couldn't help but exclaim, "It feels so fulfilling!"
This statement came from the bottom of Lingfeng's heart. He had been cultivating in the Demon Cultivation Hall in the morning and training in the Assassination Hall until late at night; how could he not feel fulfilled?
Major Servant brought over a porcelain bowl and quietly approached Lingfeng, saying, "This is some good meat I specially saved for you. Hurry up and eat it, or they'll blame me again when they come down!"
Lingfeng nodded gratefully and immediately started eating heartily.
Major Servant stood by, watching Lingfeng with satisfaction, feeling quite happy inside.
Since being brought to Spirit Sect by the Master of the Demon Cult, Major Servant had almost gotten used to others' disdain and discrimination; indifference was nearly all he felt.
However, ever since Lingfeng arrived, his perspective had completely changed. Lingfeng's fair treatment of everyone and compassion for the weak had touched Major Servant deeply.
