The short figure held the Xuanyuan Talisman in hand, seemingly protected by divine spirits. Muttering something under his breath, the Xuanyuan Talisman suddenly transformed into a beam of golden light, and moments later, a sword appeared in the short figure's hand.
"Indeed, it's the Xuanyuan Talisman; it can actually summon the Virtual Xuanyuan Sword!" Lingfeng's eyes lit up.
Although this Xuanyuan Sword was virtual, it was forged from the Spiritual Energy within the Xuanyuan Talisman. Such a Xuanyuan Sword, while not as powerful as a real Xuanyuan Sword, still possessed a quarter of its power.
The woman retreated repeatedly, her expression growing heavier.
The short figure chuckled and walked toward the woman. "What's wrong? Are you scared? You foolish woman, if I didn't have any magical artifacts on me, would I dare to step into Luoling Mountain so easily?"
The woman seemed to be at her wit's end; she glanced around and suddenly turned to flee.
"Trying to escape?" However, the short figure did not want her to get away. The Xuanyuan Sword in his hand suddenly soared into the air, transforming into a beam of golden light that shot directly into the woman's body.
The woman let out a cry of despair and collapsed to the ground.
Lingfeng was shocked, thinking that this woman was indeed a monster. But how could an ordinary monster withstand the power of the Xuanyuan Talisman? This monster's demise was likely her own fate!
Seeing the female monster fall to the ground, the short figure swaggered over. He casually pulled out the Xuanyuan Sword, which transformed back into the Xuanyuan Talisman.
"Someone come! Afterward, carry this monster back so we can claim our reward from the Bounty Master!" The short figure turned and shouted to everyone.
However, Lingfeng did not move because if a monster truly died, it would revert to its original form. Yet this woman had been struck by the Xuanyuan Sword and had not transformed back, indicating something was amiss.
Upon hearing the short figure's command, everyone stepped forward. But after taking just two steps, they all displayed expressions of terror and began to retreat.
The short figure was confused and angrily asked, "What are you doing? Are you trying to rebel?" Just as he was about to take out his steel whip to teach them a lesson, he felt a chill creeping into his neck and couldn't help but shiver.
Feeling strange, he turned around and saw the woman's furious face.
"Ah, my goodness!" the short figure exclaimed, retreating rapidly.
The woman sneered twice and said, "Short Gourd, do you think the Xuanyuan Sword can kill me?" With that, she suddenly opened her mouth wide, revealing four sharp fangs inside.
"Zombie?" The short figure quickly retreated again and took out the Xuanyuan Talisman, but it no longer glowed with any power. He hurriedly recited a few incantations, but the Xuanyuan Talisman remained unresponsive.
Lingfeng sneered, thinking, "That Xuanyuan Talisman is a high-grade Spirit Talisman; after using it once, it requires infusing Spiritual Energy to restore its use."
It turned out that the short figure had just used the Xuanyuan Talisman, exhausting its Spiritual Energy, and now he could not transform it into the Xuanyuan Sword.
"Come on, come on!" The woman's face began to distort; her originally beautiful features transformed into a greenish face with sharp teeth, finally taking on the appearance of a fox-headed human.
"A Nine-Tailed Fox!" The short figure was horrified. Just as he was about to turn and flee, one of the fox's tails wrapped around him.
The Nine-Tailed Fox let out a shriek as the other seven tails ensnared his limbs and head. It growled fiercely, "I have lived for over five hundred years without losing a single life. How can I let you waste one of my lives?"
The short figure lost all his previous bravado, trembling all over and begging for mercy incoherently.
The Nine-Tailed Fox sneered coldly and said viciously, "Spare you? Sure, once you're dead, I'll spare you!" With that, she spread her hands outward, and all eight tails exerted force simultaneously. There was a loud crack as the short figure was torn to pieces.
Everyone was shocked and knelt down to plead for mercy.
The Nine-Tailed Fox glanced at them but had no desire to kill further. Having just lost one of her tails and revealing her true form made her feel somewhat uncomfortable. She waved her hand and said, "I don't like to indiscriminately kill innocents. As the saying goes, if the upper beam is not straight, the lower beam will be crooked. I know you were forced into this; quickly leave Luoling Mountain and be good people in the future!"
Everyone hurriedly expressed their gratitude and ran away in haste.
However, Lingfeng stood there with a curious expression.
The Nine-Tailed Fox looked at Lingfeng and asked softly, "Why aren't you running?"
Lingfeng remained silent, summoning a Ginseng Tendril from Xuanji. He broke off a piece and offered it to the Nine-Tailed Fox, saying, "This is a Whisker from a Thousand-Year Ginseng, filled with Spiritual Energy. Eat it; it will help you recover quickly!"
The Nine-Tailed Fox was taken aback and smiled kindly, "Aren't you afraid of me?"
Lingfeng smiled back and replied, "I know you are a good spirit, so I'm not afraid!"
The Nine-Tailed Fox looked at Lingfeng gratefully, ate the Ginseng Tendril, and sat cross-legged. Before long, she regained her human form. She then stood up, adjusted her clothes, and said, "I just saw you and noticed that your aura is different from others. Are you a cultivator?"
"Yes," Lingfeng nodded and said, "I am Lingfeng, a disciple of the Demon Suppression Sect!"
The Nine-Tailed Fox seemed to have a good impression of the Demon Suppression Sect. Upon hearing Lingfeng's words, her eyes lit up as she exclaimed, "I've heard that the Demon Suppression Sect is the foremost righteous sect in the Demon Subduing Continent. Meeting you today truly lives up to its reputation."
"You flatter me!" Lingfeng scratched his head shyly.
After a while, the Nine-Tailed Fox waved her hand, retracting her magic, causing all the skeletons on the ground to disappear.
Seeing this, Lingfeng smiled and asked, "So were those just illusions?"
The Nine-Tailed Fox nodded and said, "Yes. Once we foxes become spirits, we excel at illusion techniques." After a pause, she continued, "Since I attained human form, I have been diligently cultivating on Luoling Mountain. Later, I discovered that many people enjoy capturing spirit beasts, so I decided to hide here and protect Luoling Mountain!"
Historically, foxes have been regarded as cunning creatures. Hearing this from the Nine-Tailed Fox made Lingfeng feel great admiration. He quickly said, "There are more people outside; they are from the White Jade Escort Agency. They came here intending to capture Hundred Venom Bees. I came to disrupt their plans!"
The Nine-Tailed Fox sighed lightly and said, "Last time the White Jade Escort Agency used Hundred Venom Bees to eliminate most of the Crane Beasts. However, I had just returned from a fierce battle then and my Spiritual Energy was depleted, so I couldn't help the Crane Beasts. Later on, to prevent the White Jade Escort Agency from capturing Hundred Venom Bees again, I secretly relocated all the Hundred Venom Bees here to another region!"
Lingfeng finally breathed a sigh of relief; it seemed that his trip to White Phoenix Mountain was not in vain after all.
Since this matter has been mostly resolved, Lingfeng naturally could not stay any longer. He bowed and said, "Senior, it's getting late, and I have important matters to attend to. I will take my leave now!"
The Nine-Tailed Fox nodded slightly and called out to Lingfeng.
Lingfeng felt puzzled and turned around, only to see the Nine-Tailed Fox holding the Xuanyuan Talisman in her hand.
"This Xuanyuan Talisman is considered a high-quality magical artifact, but it consumes spiritual power each time it is used and requires forty-nine units to recover. Since you are a cultivator, you should take this Spirit Talisman with you!"
In truth, Lingfeng had been thinking about that Spirit Talisman all along but had refrained from mentioning it due to face. With the Nine-Tailed Fox offering this favor, how could Lingfeng not be pleased? He immediately accepted the Spirit Talisman and thanked the Nine-Tailed Fox.
Lingfeng followed his original path, crossing over the mountains until he reached the edge of the mountain.
At this moment, the camp of White Phoenix Mountain was flickering with firelight, but there were not many people inside. Standing in the center of the camp were White Phoenix Mountain and Bai Lian.
"Strange, it's been so long; why hasn't there been any signal sent out?" White Phoenix Mountain said, holding his sword and looking up into the distance.
"Could it be that they took a wrong turn?" Bai Lian asked.
White Phoenix Mountain pondered for a moment and shook his head. "Last time we captured the Hundred Venom Bee, we used these people. Logically speaking, they shouldn't forget the way!"
Lingfeng found it amusing and thought to himself that it wasn't that they had forgotten the way; it was because there were no more Hundred Venom Bees in these mountains! With that thought, Lingfeng remembered another matter—helping Mei rescue her grandfather.
Afterward, Lingfeng used his earth escape technique and arrived at the place where he had last sent Mei—the Herb Hall.
The Herb Hall was located in a secluded gorge, containing a dozen thatched cottages. Behind those cottages stood a wooden house closely nestled against the mountain peak. Compared to the cottages, that house seemed more suitable for human habitation.
Lingfeng did not linger and lightly stepped forward into the interior.
However, just as Lingfeng passed by a thatched cottage, he suddenly heard a dog bark. Startled, he looked in the direction of the bark and saw a large, muscular dog charging towards him.
The dog was pure white, with its fangs bared, and could easily snap Lingfeng's neck if it stood up. At that moment, White Dog leaped into the air, reaching over two meters high.
Lingfeng dared not hesitate and quickly sidestepped to avoid it. He then pushed off the ground with his toes and jumped onto the thatched roof.
The cottage was only about two meters tall, but White Dog seemed to know exactly what to do. It took a step back and then sprang upward effortlessly onto the roof!
"What an impressive dog!" In truth, Lingfeng was not afraid of the dog; he simply knew it must belong to Mei. If he injured it, Mei would surely be heartbroken.
What Lingfeng could do was to evade White Dog, ensuring that neither could harm the other. However, he did not expect White Dog to be so formidable.
No longer daring to delay, Lingfeng quickly flipped off the roof and ran towards the Wooden House.
Seeing Lingfeng heading for the Wooden House, White Dog became even more anxious. It jumped down and chased after him, barking loudly.
As Lingfeng ran, he couldn't help but chuckle bitterly, thinking, "Now I finally understand what it means to be 'bitten by a dog while being a good person'!"
Just then, lights finally illuminated inside the Wooden House. A figure appeared in the glass, hurriedly getting dressed and opening the door.
"White Wolf, stop barking!" Mei stepped out of the house and saw White Dog chasing after Lingfeng, quickly calling it to halt.
