Faced with Wu Zhixiang's aggressive demeanor, Lin Zhao fully demonstrated the qualities of a professional soldier. He slightly lowered the muzzle of his weapon, indicating that he would not initiate an attack while also leaving himself room for a counterattack.
"We are here on orders to explore the Ancient Ruins ahead, so please cooperate," Lin Zhao warned in an official tone.
"Just you?" Wu Zhixiang looked at us with disdain, as if he were looking down on us. He sneered, "What can you possibly explore? A bunch of roughnecks. What if you damage the Ancient Ruins?"
"Exactly," a young man beside him chimed in. "We are professionals; it's better to leave the exploration of the Ancient Ruins to us."
"Do you have relevant credentials?" Lin Zhao asked.
Wu Zhixiang pulled out a few documents and a piece of paper from his pocket and handed them to the young man, who cautiously passed them to Lin Zhao.
I couldn't understand the documents, but I could read the approval written on that piece of paper. Essentially, it stated that this Archaeological Team was authorized to conduct exploration and excavation of the Ancient Ruins located in our area.
Lin Zhao frowned; this was troublesome. It seemed that the other side was not going to comply easily. Moreover, they had legitimate reasons and ample preparations. He cast me a questioning glance.
"Have you finished reading?" The young man snatched back the documents and returned them to Wu Zhixiang, who slowly tucked them back into his pocket.
"We've finished reviewing your credentials; what about yours?"
"Sorry, that's not possible," Lin Zhao replied.
We were conducting a covert operation, so we certainly couldn't reveal ourselves casually. At this moment, Lin Zhao was also uncertain about what to do.
"Are there any other Ancient Ruins besides the Ritual Platform nearby?" I asked Lin Zhao, wondering if our objectives were not aligned.
"No, we have searched. There are no caves or anything else around here besides that Ritual Platform."
This has become complicated. It seems that the purpose of this Archaeologist team is also that mysterious Ritual Platform.
"Let's do this: we will observe the situation first and see what they intend to do. If anything unexpected happens beyond our predictions, we will intervene. I don't recommend violent cooperation, but I won't rule it out either."
"That's the only option we have," Lin Zhao said after a moment of contemplation, agreeing with my idea.
"We have come to an agreement; we must supervise your actions." Lin Zhao turned to Wu Zhixiang and added before they could react, "If you disagree, we will have no choice but to drive you away."
Wu Zhixiang's face showed anger, but he was wary of the guns in Lin Zhao's hands and could only reluctantly agree.
"You cannot interfere with our Archaeologist research, nor can you seize our Archaeologist results."
"That will depend on the situation," Lin Zhao replied. "Moreover, the tents you are using were set up by us, so please return them."
"That's not going to happen. Where would we stay if we give them back?" a young man rushed forward.
Do you still have any shame? This was originally ours; whether you live or die is none of our business.
"Forget it; that old guy isn't very young either. Let's just set up a new one," Lin Zhao suggested to me.
"I don't mind; it doesn't affect me much." This was the truth. Although there are many poisonous insects in the jungle, as long as I wear the Azure Robe, it's all resolved.
Lin Zhao immediately organized people to start rebuilding the tent on the spot. I couldn't help out, so I found a thick tree branch and closed my eyes to rest.
I was indeed resting my eyes; in fact, I was quietly reciting the Tao Te Ching. I hadn't done my morning practice in a while, and this environment didn't allow me to practice Wuqinxi, so I recited the Tao Te Ching instead, considering it as having completed my morning session.
I could clearly sense the movements of the wind and grass around me, something I naturally perceived after calming down. It was at this moment that I quickly noticed someone approaching from a distance.
I formed a Spell and chanted, "Three Purities Edict, Daoist Law of Correct Origin." Activating my Spiritual Sight, I looked in the direction of the approaching figures.
A group of about five or six people, all dressed similarly to the young man and Wu Zhixiang from before, appeared to be members of the Archaeologist team. They showed no signs of hiding their presence, laughing as they walked. Confirming they were not enemies, I exchanged a glance with Lin Zhao to prepare him, then continued reciting my Tao Te Ching.
Before long, the Archaeologist team arrived at the campsite. To my surprise, there was even a beautiful Sister among them, dressed like the other Archaeologist team members, with short hair hanging by her ears. If I hadn't looked closely, I wouldn't have realized she was a girl.
Lin Zhao instructed the other members of the Execution Office to form a covert shift while allowing the rest to move freely within the campsite.
In the mountains, it is prohibited to start fires casually; however, the Archaeologist team clearly had no such awareness as they were cooking on a stone stove they had built. Given this, I tacitly accepted my team's desire to start a fire.
Initially, we did not plan to make a fire and only brought some compressed food and canned goods. Although my mustard bag could keep things fresh, I do not eat meat, so I didn't bring any meat products.
Zhang Fan, who also practiced in the mountains and had no restrictions, was clever enough to catch a very fat Wild Rabbit. After skinning it, he prepared to roast it.
However, starting a fire became a Trouble. The only pack of matches was in Lin Zhao's hands, and Zhang Fan didn't dare ask for them—Lin Zhao opposed making a fire.
Zhang Fan took two sticks to try and create friction for fire. How long would that take?
I casually pinched a Fire Talisman, ignited it, and tossed it in front of Zhang Fan, setting his wood ablaze.
Clearly startled, Zhang Fan was seen by the girl from the neighboring Archaeologist team's tent who had just stepped out to fetch water.
Oh no, I've caused trouble; that Sister saw me using Taoist Arts. I quickly pretended to be uninterested and turned away from Zhang Fan. The Sister seemed not to have seen clearly; after finishing her task, she turned back into the tent. Thankfully, otherwise it would have been real Trouble.
Though an expert at roasting, Zhang Fan even took out a jar of Honey to coat the rabbit. Soon enough, the aroma of roasted rabbit wafted through the air.
"Nice job, expert," I said as I leaped down from the tree and stood opposite Zhang Fan.
Zhang Fan glanced at me and shifted to the side, as if afraid I would snatch his rabbit.
"Don't worry, I won't take yours." I pulled out a few steamed buns from the Seed Bag, threaded them onto a branch, and followed Zhang Fan's example by spreading a layer of Honey on them.
The Honey melted on the surface of the buns, forming a thin, crispy layer that became particularly fragrant and sweet after being roasted over the charcoal fire.
Zhang Fan and I were enjoying our lunch, while everyone else had brought their own rations. The few 'Strongmen' we had captured were already chatting with the Archaeologist team.
Suddenly, a loud crash erupted from the neighboring Archaeologist team's tent, sounding as if something had exploded. The people inside rushed out in a hurry, bringing out a cloud of smoke, and they were all coughing violently.
I watched those fleeing from the tent with a sense of schadenfreude, including the short Sister.
The Sister seemed to sense my gaze and turned her head. It was then that I saw her for the first time. She had an adorably round face, and her outfit had been changed to casual clothes. She had a small canine tooth and a few freckles on her face, with very clear eyes. One hand was covering her mouth while the other waved away the smoke in front of her. You might wonder why so many people came out just to look at the Sister? Well, when I'm eating, can I still have an appetite looking at all those men?
The smoke didn't drift our way, which was just as well because my buns were now perfectly roasted, releasing the enticing sweet aroma unique to Honey after being slightly charred.
It seemed like the Sister caught a whiff of that sweet scent; she lightly twitched her nose and walked over to me and Zhang Fan.
Zhang Fan was completely focused on his roasted rabbit, turning it over while drooling.
"What happened over there?" I asked as the Sister approached closer.
"Nothing much. A senior brought a canister of gas, but it accidentally exploded," she replied with an air of helplessness.
"Bringing a canister of gas to a place like this takes some guts," I said as I picked up one of the buns, pressing it gently—it was just right in texture.
"Can I have one?" The Sister looked at my bun with an expression full of anticipation.
"Don't they give you anything to eat?" I directly handed the whole branch to Sister, which had two steamed buns on it. In a team like the Archaeologists, overflowing with male hormones, the only Sister actually had nothing to eat?
Sister took the branch, sniffed the steamed buns on it, and nodded in satisfaction, her eyes narrowing into crescent moons: "I have to be brave enough to eat food cooked by a bunch of Archaeologists. Each dish looks like a mess from an excavation site, all clumped together."
"Aren't you afraid your senior brother will get angry at your description of his cooking skills?"
"What's there to be angry about? It's the truth. Sigh, why are your steamed buns so delicious?" Sister took a bite of the bun and nodded as if she had gained some insight.
"I just spread a layer of Honey on them. Are you also studying to be an Archaeologist?"
"I used to love ancient poetry, but unfortunately, there are too few Departments of Ancient Culture. I thought being an Archaeologist would have some connection to that, but it turned out I completely fell into a pit. I'm the only girl in the entire Department of Ancient Culture."
"That's not bad; everyone dotes on you."
"Have you ever experienced being hit on by guys who don't know how to flirt? The boys in this Department of Ancient Culture are as stiff as ancient fossils."
"Crazy! If any guy tries to hit on me without knowing better, I would definitely call Red Boy to beat him half to death! As for why I would call Red Boy, it's because he's a minor and has protection laws."
