I chatted with Old Black for a while and took on a very simple task, which was about a family that had recently bought a house that was haunted. There are many ghost stories in folklore, and a large part of them is actually just people's own paranoia. When the truth finally comes to light, it often leaves people feeling amused.
However, it seems that the homeowner actually saw a ghost this time, which complicates things. But what is there to fear? I am the Human Judge personally appointed by Yama King! It's all just a formality!
Since I had nothing else to do and didn't have classes in the afternoon, I informed Lin Miaomiao and Red Boy that I had something to take care of and set off alone to the task location.
The specific location seemed to be outside the city area, but it wasn't too far. I chose it because it was convenient; if everything went smoothly, I could return for dinner in the evening. Moreover, there appeared to be a direct bus from the school gate to that suburban area.
Once on the bus, there weren't many people—only about seven or eight. I walked to the back of the bus, sat down, and began to rest my eyes.
I don't know how long it took, but the bus came to a stop. The suburb I was heading to was actually the bus's final destination. After getting off, I realized that I was already entering the mountains; in the distance, I could see several beautifully decorated villas.
These villas were inhabited by wealthy people. This area is far from the city and has fresher air, making it very suitable for older individuals. Additionally, more and more people enjoy growing their own vegetables these days, so this place has become quite popular among the affluent.
My target was one of those houses. The homeowner usually lived in the city; this house was occupied by The Owner's Father. However, when the homeowner visited his father recently, he seemed to have encountered a ghost. Initially, he just wanted his father to move out, but his father refused to leave. That’s why he had no choice but to hire someone for an exorcism.
The Execution Office actually has two parts: one is official tasks assigned by Court Assignment, which usually involves designated personnel; the other involves private assignments where the Execution Office merely acts as an intermediary. The task I received falls under this private category.
Although this area isn't densely populated, there aren't many houses here either, and there is quite a bit of space between each house.
The house I was looking for was easy to find; it was a three-story villa. In this entire area, there was only one villa with three floors—that was it.
I strolled over leisurely. The villa had a small yard where several crops were growing—some peppers and cucumbers—and Farming Tools were leaning against the wall. On another side, there were a few chickens kept in a bamboo cage.
I knocked on the door, and an elderly voice came from inside: "Who is it?"
The door opened to reveal an old man dressed in coarse linen clothes—the kind worn by practitioners of traditional arts—matching trousers and wearing a pair of cloth shoes with layered soles. Although his face bore wrinkles, he didn't show much sign of hardship; he looked like a retired official.
The old man looked quite spirited, standing there like a spear, his expression commanding respect without anger. His eyes sparkled with vitality as he scrutinized me from head to toe.
"Who are you?"
"Sir, I was sent by your son," I replied, not daring to mention that I was here to exorcise ghosts, fearing it might frighten him.
"Just wait a moment." The old man took out his phone and called his son. After a few words, he handed the phone to me.
"Hello, is this Master Yin?" A deep male voice came through the line.
From his voice, it was clear he was a businessman. Businesspeople generally hold those who dabble in mysticism in high regard. Why? Because they believe in it; superstitions and feng shui are often seen as pathways to wealth.
"Yes, it's me." I lowered my voice. "I think it would be better if you came yourself."
"Alright, you take a break for now. I'll be back soon." The man on the other end said.
After all, it was that middle-aged man who had seen the ghost; it was better for the old man to stay away from that situation. I handed the phone back to the old man, who exchanged a few more words before letting me inside.
Once I entered, I realized that the interior decor was completely different from the luxurious exterior of the villa. The furnishings were very simple: just a few wooden chairs and a table made up the living room. There was also a room with a wooden bed and a television at the head of the bed. It certainly didn't look like the setup of someone living in a villa.
After bringing me into the villa, the old man asked me to go upstairs since he lived downstairs and his son lived on the second floor. It seemed that he didn't have a good relationship with his son; even mentioning him brought a coldness to his tone.
Since there was no one on the second floor, it felt inappropriate for me to just go up there, so I politely declined the old man's offer and sat down on one of the wooden chairs in the living room to wait for his son.
The old man's son arrived quickly, looking anxious. After exchanging pleasantries with me, he led me upstairs. He didn't want his father to know he was seeking help for ghost-related matters, so it would be best to wait until nighttime. Since that was the case, we decided to wait until evening.
I chatted with Old Man's Son for a while and learned some details during our conversation.
Old Man's Son's surname is Zhao, so I just call him Boss Zhao. Boss Zhao runs a business selling decoration materials and makes quite a bit of money. He built a house here for his parents. Originally, they lived together, but his mother passed away recently, leaving the old man alone. Before retiring, the old man was a soldier and never liked his son's way of doing things. Even after moving into the villa, he insisted on living like he did in the countryside, which made Boss Zhao's wife reluctant to live with her in-laws.
Anyway, Boss Zhao is wealthy, so he has another house in the city where he lives, but he comes back to visit his parents from time to time. After his mother's funeral, Boss Zhao took some time to stay with his father. However, one night when he got up to use the bathroom, he saw a ghostly figure in the house accompanied by eerie sounds, which terrified him. The next day, he sought out a renowned monk for help, but before the monk could perform any rituals, his father chased him away. His father, being an old revolutionary, despises anything related to gods or ghosts. So Boss Zhao had no choice but to act secretly at night. But how could a monk perform rituals without making noise? Soon enough, his father discovered him again and scolded him harshly. Moreover, the monk's rituals had no effect; not long after that, Boss Zhao saw the ghost again. That’s why he felt compelled to offer a reward for someone to help catch the ghost.
I thought it was something serious; it was just about catching the ghost without waking up the old man.
After chatting for a while, it was almost time for dinner. Boss Zhao initially wanted to take me out for a nice meal in the city, but I declined due to my vegetarian diet. So instead, Boss Zhao picked some vegetables from his father's field and we hastily prepared dinner.
"By the way, Boss Zhao, what about that photo that was in the hall?" After dinner, I called Boss Zhao out under the pretense of digesting my food. During dinner, I had already used Spiritual Sight to scan around the villa but didn’t find anything unusual.
"My mother; she passed away this year," Boss Zhao seemed very reluctant to discuss this matter.
"Really? Your mother looks quite young," I noted. Boss Zhao is over 40 years old and his father must be nearing 70, yet the elderly woman in the photo looked no more than 50.
"Sigh." Boss Zhao suddenly sighed deeply. "Brother Yin, I won’t hide it from you; she isn’t my biological mother."
Wait, there’s more to this?
"My real mother died when I was very young; I hardly remember her. My dad raised me by himself. He was a soldier and before retiring was a Squad Leader in the army. Later on, when I made money in business, I thought my father had a tough life and hired a caregiver for him. Unexpectedly, my father fell for this caregiver. I didn’t stop him because I thought it was good for someone to take care of the old man. But who would have thought that caregiver suddenly died? Now my dad is all alone again."
