With such a commotion, the instructor finally acknowledged me. As I walked out of the campus with a swagger, I ran into Lin Miaomiao coming out with Red Boy.
Lin Miaomiao looked at me and couldn't help but tease, "What's going on? Did someone steal your paper?"
"Come on, stop with the sarcasm. I just ran thirty laps around the track; my legs are numb," I said as I pulled Red Boy over to use him as a makeshift crutch.
"What got into you to run laps? You must have too much energy to burn," Lin Miaomiao rolled her eyes at me. "It's almost time for lunch. How about we go together?"
"Sure," I readily agreed; it was time to treat Lin Miaomiao to a meal. "Do you have any recommendations?"
"Follow me."
Not far from the school gate, there was a food street lined with various eateries and milk tea shops. It was lunchtime, and the place was bustling with people. In one corner of this street, there was a small noodle shop called Red Bean Noodle Shop. It had only about twenty seats, but they were all occupied. The shop was quiet except for the sound of boiling water.
"Welcome," we heard Sister's voice as we entered. "I'm sorry, but we don't have any seats available right now. Would you mind waiting for a bit?"
Lin Miaomiao was someone who knew good food; she wouldn't lead me astray.
"This is the only place on this street that serves vegetarian dishes," Lin Miaomiao explained to me. Both Red Boy and I didn't eat meat, and she remembered that.
While waiting for a table, I took a closer look at the noodle shop. The decor was simple and elegant, with light blue wallpaper on the walls and only a few flowers in the corners for decoration. There was an ink painting hanging on the wall depicting a bird and a bunch of purple grapes. Inside the shop, there was only one cashier, one server, and someone busy in the kitchen. The server was Sister, who had greeted us at the door; her voice was soft and carried a natural shyness as she approached us with a menu.
I took the menu from her; there were only a few types of noodles listed—just as Lin Miaomiao had said, there were no meat dishes here.
"The signature dish is Red Bean Noodles, and the Spinach Noodles are also very delicious," Sister said gently, her voice more enticing than the noodles themselves.
"I want the mixed noodles," I said.
"Red Bean Noodles," Lin Miaomiao replied.
"I want Red Bean Noodles too," Red Boy added.
At that moment, someone finally finished their meal and stood up, so Lin Miaomiao, Red Boy, and I quickly took their seats.
"Miao Miao, something feels off. Why is it that almost every couple here is sitting together eating noodles?"
I had sensed something was wrong from the beginning, and now I finally understood the issue.
"This is a couple's noodle shop," Lin Miaomiao said, her gaze drifting elsewhere as she casually remarked. "Don't get me wrong; it's just that this place guarantees everything is vegetarian. If you lose your magic power again, I can't afford to compensate for it."
"Ango, something's not right," Red Boy whispered in my ear.
"What is it?" Lin Miaomiao asked curiously.
"Nothing, nothing. He just needs to use the restroom," I signaled to Red Boy to keep quiet and pulled him out of the noodle shop.
"What's wrong?" I asked Red Boy.
"There’s a presence of demons," Red Boy said with a serious expression. "That waitress has a faint aura of demons around her, but it's masked by a special scent. Still, I managed to catch a whiff of it."
Damn, how should I carry this? It's just a bowl of noodles, and here comes a fairy.
"Do you think this fairy opened a noodle shop here for no reason?" There must be some motivation behind it, right? That Sister doesn't look like the kind of fairy that drains people's vitality.
"I don't know either; I just sensed the aura of a fairy on her."
"Just focus on eating the noodles later."
"Okay."
I still trust Red Boy a lot. After all, what kind of environment did he grow up in? He is very familiar with the aura of fairies, so I had no hesitation in believing that Red Boy was right.
When we returned to our seats, the first bowl of Red Bean Noodles was already served. Red Boy quickly took the noodles and placed them in front of himself. This time, I didn't think Red Boy was being rude because we were suspicious of this noodle shop, so the first bowl of noodles absolutely couldn't be eaten by Lin Miaomiao.
"Oh wow, Red Bean Noodles? This is my first time hearing about it. Come on, let me have a bite." I reached for some noodles with my chopsticks. Red Boy looked at me worriedly, and I signaled him not to act rashly.
"Sluurp~" I slurped up the noodles and found nothing unusual. The noodles were authentic handmade noodles, and they seemed to have red beans kneaded into them, giving them a reddish color. They tasted sweet, and the broth was light; when savored slowly, it had a fresh sweetness with a hint of sourness, topped with some cooked red beans. Overall, there were no issues, and the taste was quite good.
I nodded subtly to indicate that everything was fine. Red Boy picked up a red bean with his chopsticks, tasted it, then took a sip of the broth. He looked at me and indicated that everything was also fine on his end.
Before long, my mixed noodles were served.
Spinach Noodles, as the name suggests, are made by kneading spinach juice into the dough. The freshly cooked noodles were bright green and very appetizing. When vinegar was poured over the Spinach Noodles and stirred, the color of the noodles gradually darkened; this is also a standard to determine whether they are genuine Spinach Noodles.
Spinach Noodles is fine, but Red Boy has tied a knot in my heart. I plan to come back during lunch when there are fewer people to investigate.
After finishing the noodles, Lin Miaomiao wanted to go home for a nap, while I prepared to take Red Boy back to the “Red Bean Noodle Shop” at noon. So I lied and said I needed to buy a phone, and parted ways with Lin Miaomiao.
I wasn't really lying; I genuinely needed to buy a phone. I also had to get one for Red Boy.
Not far from the food street, there is a street dedicated to electronics, selling everything from phones to computers.
“Sir.” A guy stopped me. “Looking to buy a phone? I have the latest Apple model here, with 4GB of memory and a slim body. Buy it now and get an extra battery.”
Seriously? Does he think I'm a fool? Does he really think I don't understand? This is consumer fraud! Who buys an Apple for that much? Back in my hometown, it’s only one dollar fifty per pound!
I ignored him and pulled Red Boy along.
The last shop on the street had no customers. Since neither Red Boy nor I liked crowds, we decided to go in there just to buy a phone.
There was only one Boss in the store, and when I looked closer, I recognized him! Isn’t that Sun God?
“Brother Wen, looking relaxed!” I walked into the phone store. Suddenly, I remembered that my “Nokia” was given to me by him. He even specifically told me that I could change my phone… what a schemer!
“Hey, Little Anzi! Here to buy a phone? Big brother has a few models that are perfect for you,” Sun God said with his scheming smile.
