During the winter break of my sophomore year, while moving, I accidentally discovered that letter. It was then that I realized my feelings for Ma Boliang were not love, but rather... dependence.
I couldn't imagine what would have happened if Ma Boliang and I had gone to the same university back then. Fortunately, he didn't choose me; he chose his dreams.
I lifted my head and looked at Ma Boliang, saying earnestly, "I'm sorry, Bo Liang."
Ma Boliang was taken aback. "Why are you apologizing?"
I pressed my lips together and softly replied, "At that time, I couldn't distinguish between love and dependence. I thought I liked you, but in reality, I had just grown accustomed to your presence and treated you like family."
"And now, I understand that love is not about taking unilaterally."
"So, I'm sorry."
Ma Boliang stared at me in a daze for a long time before he smiled. He reached out to ruffle my hair affectionately and said, "Silly girl, why are you saying sorry? You will always be my dearest sister."
My nose tinged with emotion, and tears nearly fell. Ma Boliang gently tapped my head with his finger and said, "No crying; you'll look bad if you cry."
I sniffled and tried to force a smile. "I'm not crying."
"Yes, my Ahui is the strongest."
After seeing Ma Boliang off, I turned to walk back. Just as I reached the door, I saw a figure standing in the distance, not knowing how long they had been there. The cigarette held between their fingers flickered with light.
I weakly closed my eyes.
After living together for three years, I never knew that Sun Yunfei smoked.
I walked straight past him, pretending not to see.
Sun Yunfei grabbed my arm and coldly asked, "Who is he?"
I opened my eyes and calmly looked at him. "Ma Boliang."
Sun Yunfei frowned. "What is your relationship with him?"
I opened the door and entered the password without responding. "He's my blind date."
Sun Yunfei followed me in, pressing further, "Did you come back for him?"
I nodded.
"Are you planning to marry him?"
I nodded again.
Sun Yunfei gritted his teeth:
"What does he have that I don't? Is it that he treats you better or listens to you more?"
I glanced at him lightly and repeated the content of the last message:
"Sun Yunfei, don't ask anymore. Let's not contact each other in the future."
Sun Yunfei's hand tightened on my shoulder, as if he wanted to crush me.
"Don't contact? You think saying 'don't contact' means we won't?"
I met his gaze:
"Sun Yunfei, you and I were never meant to be."
Sun Yunfei was taken aback.
I pushed him away and sat down on the sofa, sighing.
"You and I are both unwilling to just date; we want a future."
"But there is no future for us."
Sun Yunfei stood still, looking down,
after a long silence, he quietly said, "Are you really willing to marry him?"
"Why wouldn't I?" I retorted,
"At least he doesn't make me feel disgusted."
Sun Yunfei suddenly looked up, his eyes reddening, staring at me in disbelief. "Disgusting?"
I smiled lightly, my tone gentle. "Sun Yunfei, we both know that this should have ended a long time ago."
"Being tired of it is just being tired of it, there’s no reason."
Sun Yunfei stared at me blankly, as if he were a statue.
I stood up and walked to the window, gazing at the overcast sky outside. "After this storm, summer will be over."
"Sun Yunfei, we both need to embrace new lives."
Sun Yunfei remained silent. Suddenly, lightning flashed outside, followed by a loud thunderclap.
The rain poured down heavily. It rained for a long time, long enough to dispel all the lingering heat of summer.
After that rain, Sun Yunfei never appeared again.
I continued with my daily life.
Until one day, as I was coming out of the supermarket with groceries in hand, a figure suddenly rushed towards me.
I was knocked to the ground, and the contents of my bag scattered everywhere.
I looked up in surprise to find that the person was—my father.
Yuhiheng.
Yuhiheng fell to his knees with a thud, tears streaming down his face. "Ahui, I'm sorry, it was my fault."
"I've changed for the better; can you forgive me?"
Passersby around us stopped to watch.
