Chen Xiaoxiao trembled as she struggled to utter a name: "Wang... Aunt Wang..."
Chen Feng suddenly released Chen Xiaoxiao's arm, as if he had been shocked. He staggered back a few steps, his face pale as paper, his lips quivering slightly but unable to produce any sound.
My ghost floated uncertainly, nearly dissipating. Aunt Wang? How could this be? How could she do such a thing? In an instant, countless questions and confusions surged in my heart, leaving me breathless.
"Chen Feng... are you... are you okay?" Chen Xiaoxiao's voice trembled with a hint of concern. She reached out to support Chen Feng, but he instinctively dodged away.
Chen Feng took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. " Chen Xiaoxiao... you must not tell the police about this..." he said in a low voice, his tone urgent and pleading.
Chen Xiaoxiao looked at Chen Feng in confusion, her eyes filled with bewilderment. "Why? Why can't we tell the police?"
Chen Feng walked to the window, turning his back to Chen Xiaoxiao, his hands tightly clenched into fists. "I... I will find out... I will get to the bottom of this... trust me..." His voice was deep and hoarse, as if it were squeezed out from deep within his throat.
Outside the window, a police car whizzed by, its flashing lights casting mottled shadows on Chen Feng's face.
My ghost quietly hovered in the air, watching Chen Feng's silhouette with complex emotions. I didn't understand why Chen Feng wanted to conceal this matter. Could it be... could he really have something to do with Aunt Wang? A sense of foreboding surged in my heart, sending a chill through me.
"Chen Feng... I'm... I'm scared..." Chen Xiaoxiao's voice carried a hint of sobbing.
Chen Feng turned around and walked up to Chen Xiaoxiao, gently patting her shoulder. "It's okay... I will protect you... I won't let you get hurt..." His tone was gentle yet firm, but it couldn't hide a trace of panic in his eyes.
As Chen Feng left Chen Xiaoxiao's residence, his footsteps were heavy. My ghost silently followed behind him, watching his back, filled with confusion and unease.
I decided to seek the truth on my own. I floated back to my apartment and found Aunt Wang.
Aunt Wang was sitting on the sofa watching television, holding an apple and slowly nibbling on it. I floated in front of Aunt Wang, trying to get her attention, but I realized that she couldn't see me or hear my voice at all.
"Aunt Wang... Aunt Wang... can you hear me?" I called out repeatedly, but there was no response. Aunt Wang continued to munch on the apple, her gaze blankly fixed on the television screen.
I felt a wave of helplessness and despair; I didn't know how to communicate with Aunt Wang or how to get the truth from her.
Suddenly, I remembered that Aunt Wang had once mentioned hearing strange sounds coming from my apartment. Perhaps... perhaps she knew something?
I floated beside Aunt Wang, carefully observing her expression. I noticed that her brows were furrowed, and there was a flicker of unease and panic in her eyes. She seemed to be recalling something while also deliberately avoiding it.
I decided to try a different approach. I floated in front of the television, covering the screen with my hand to see Aunt Wang's reaction. Sure enough, Aunt Wang looked up, puzzled by the television.
"Aunt Wang..." my voice was soft and ethereal, as if coming from a distant place.
Aunt Wang suddenly turned her head, her eyes filled with terror. "Who... who is speaking?" She looked around but saw nothing.
I continued, "Aunt Wang... I know you saw it... you saw what happened that night..."
Aunt Wang's body trembled slightly, and the apple fell from her hand onto the floor with a dull thud. Her face turned pale, and her lips quivered, yet no sound came out. The room was silent except for the noise coming from the television.
"I... I didn't see anything..." Aunt Wang's voice trembled as she avoided my gaze.
I floated in front of Aunt Wang and said firmly, "Aunt Wang... don't be afraid... tell me... what did you see..."
Aunt Wang took a deep breath, slowly raised her head, her eyes filled with fear and helplessness.
Her lips trembled as if she wanted to say something, but then she stopped, ultimately just shaking her head weakly. I felt an invisible pressure, a truth that was deliberately hidden. Things were more complicated than I had imagined.
