Xin Yi and Roxy fixed the Powerful Flashlight tubes they collected from the Taiwan Soldiers onto a branch, directing the beams down the mountain. Their rifles and magazines were lined up beside them, waiting for the main force of the Taiwan Soldiers to approach the summit. The Taiwan Soldiers, who were still searching for assassins on the mountain, heard gunfire from the top and quickened their pace towards it. A few minutes later, a large group of Taiwan Soldiers appeared within the beam of the Powerful Flashlight. Upon seeing several flashlights shining down from the summit, they were confused about what was happening and stopped climbing. One Taiwan Soldier cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted, "Brothers up there! What's going on? Have you caught the assassins?"
"Bang bang bang..." was the response he received, as bullets rained down from above. A row of Taiwan Soldiers in front had not yet grasped the situation when they were struck by bullets from the summit, with seven or eight falling instantly. The shouting Taiwan Soldier had his head blown off by Xin Yi's shot; the power of the automatic rifle's bullet was astonishing, tearing open his skull and splattering blood all over those nearby. He fell straight back to the ground.
The sudden gunfire threw the Taiwan Soldiers below into a panic. They quickly dropped to the ground and fired back at the summit, but with dozens of Powerful Flashlight beams blinding them, they couldn't discern where their enemies were shooting from. They could only fire wildly towards the summit, while Xin Yi and Roxy hid behind a large rock, rendering their shots ineffective and wasting ammunition. The Taiwan Soldiers were confused about their enemy's position, but Xin Yi and Roxy could see them clearly. They calmly aimed and shot in an orderly fashion; one bullet was enough to take down a Taiwan Soldier. Since they were all lying on the ground, only their heads were good targets, so every hit resulted in a headshot, leaving no chance for them to even groan before they fell.
Realizing they would become live targets if this continued, the Taiwan Soldiers could only retreat a bit to avoid the deadly bullets from above. However, just as they began to back away, they ran into their commanding officer, Leader Hong Xiaoyi, who was coming up the mountain. Seeing his soldiers retreating instead of advancing infuriated him; he pulled out his pistol and fired several shots into the air, shouting, "What the hell is going on? Why are you retreating? Whoever dares to take another step back will face military law immediately!"
The retreating Taiwan Soldiers quickly replied, "Leader, there are people at the summit shining flashlights down! As soon as anyone approaches, they open fire with deadly accuracy. We've already lost many brothers!"
"What are you all doing? How can so many be scared off by just one or two assassins?" Hong Xiaoyi was furious. These seasoned soldiers acted like heroes when drinking, gambling, fighting, or chasing women but turned into timid turtles when it came time to be real heroes; it was infuriating.
One Taiwan Soldier stepped forward with a fawning smile and said, "Leader, you don't know the situation—there are not just one or two assassins on that mountain! I saw at least twenty or thirty with flashlights alone, plus others hiding in the dark shooting at us. There must be dozens lying in ambush up there."
"You're full of crap!" Hong Xiaoyi shouted angrily. "What kind of nonsense is that? Do you think this is a war? The entire Yin-Yang Mountain is under our protection; how could dozens sneak in? Let's go; take me up there to see!"
As soon as he saw dozens of Powerful Flashlight beams shining down from above, Hong Xiaoyi was taken aback—could so many assassins really have snuck in? However, after observing for a moment from behind a tree, he realized something was off: those flashlight beams remained stationary. If they were real people, wouldn't they fear becoming live targets? With that thought in mind, Hong Xiaoyi raised his gun and aimed at one of the light sources. With a bang, he fired a shot; his aim was good—the beam extinguished immediately. A soldier quickly picked up a Powerful Flashlight to shine towards it but found only one flashlight shattered by his bullet fixed on a branch.
"Damn it! A bunch of useless fools!" Hong Xiaoyi cursed loudly. "Can't you see through such a simple trick? Open fire! Aim for the flashlights! First take them out!" The Taiwan Soldiers finally reacted to his command; now understanding that those flashlights weren't moving made them bolder as they raised their guns and shot at those light sources. This time they learned their lesson and took cover behind large trees or in shadows while firing.
This made it difficult for Xin Yi and Roxy to lock onto targets; they could only infer where the shooting Taiwan Soldiers were based on gunfire sounds. As more flashlights fixed on branches were shot down one by one, darkness gradually enveloped their surroundings. This situation was not good because the Taiwan Soldiers could slowly approach under cover of darkness. Once they pinpointed Xin Yi and Roxy's hiding spots, an endless stream of Taiwan Soldiers could overwhelm them.
When the last flashlight was shot down, darkness fell completely around them. This time the Taiwan Soldiers also learned not to use flashlights; instead, they crept up in silence towards the summit to encircle Xin Yi and Roxy before launching an all-out attack. However, Xin Yi and Roxy did not want to wait until then to fight back; judging by sound alone told them that the Taiwan Soldiers were slowly approaching the summit. So they decided to fire off all their ammunition without concern for whether they hit any advancing Taiwan Soldiers or not—intense gunfire erupted towards those below.
Due to the overwhelming number of Taiwan Soldiers and their dense formation, their random gunfire actually hit quite a few unfortunate souls. At the same time, the Taiwan Soldiers pinpointed their hiding spot and began firing in their direction. The concentrated bullets descended upon them like a disturbed hornet's nest. Fortunately, they had a large rock in front of them as cover; otherwise, being hit by so many bullets would likely leave more holes than in a hornet's nest. Despite this, the splintering rocks and debris sent dust flying, leaving them covered in dirt and blood from cuts caused by the shrapnel. However, these minor injuries were trivial for those determined to face death. When the firepower of the Taiwan Soldiers intensified, the two of them buried their heads behind the rock. Once the fire weakened, they quickly seized the opportunity to pop up and fire back fiercely. As a result, the Taiwan Soldiers hesitated to advance recklessly and could only inch forward cautiously while shooting, which meant they hadn't made much progress over a long period.
However, Xin Yi was facing some trouble. Due to limited ammunition collected, after this round of gunfire, both of their guns were down to just a few rounds. If they ran out of bullets, they would have no choice but to watch as the Taiwan Soldiers advanced. Although the Taiwan Soldiers weren't moving quickly, they were closing in fast. Roxy tightly grasped Xin Yi's hand and whispered, "Xin Yi, we're running out of bullets. What should we do next? Should we save our last bullet for ourselves?"
"No, let's use up the last bullet!" Xin Yi replied firmly with a tug on Roxy's hand. "We don't need Taiwan's bullets to end our lives; let's return all these collected bullets to them. Once we run out of ammo, we'll leave. Isn't that Cliff over there? We'll head that way and experience flying at the end; it's better than being shot through by those cold bullets."
"Yeah, that's a good suggestion!" Roxy said excitedly. "Maybe below that Cliff is some kind of paradise; if we jump down, we might become immortals! Haha... So what are we waiting for? Let's shoot until we're out of bullets so we can go be immortals together!"
Uh... Xin Yi almost fell over. What kind of logic was this girl using? She was actually looking forward to jumping off a cliff? Her eagerness made it seem like this was her lofty life goal. Was she stunned by fear? But she didn't seem that way; someone who was truly scared wouldn't express such excitement in their tone. Either she was crazy or maybe they both were. But if they were going to be crazy, then so be it; being carefree and reckless at the brink of death was certainly better than being cowardly and terrified.
So let’s shoot! One kill is one gain; two kills are double gains. The two fired all remaining bullets down the mountain, and at the end, Xin Yi picked up her empty rifle and smashed it down with a loud thud. Roxy followed suit, throwing down any movable stones or branches nearby. Not far below, there were cries from the Taiwan Soldiers who were likely hit hard by the makeshift weapons thrown down by them. However, some clever Taiwan Soldiers shouted, "Brothers! They’re out of bullets! Charge up!"
Upon hearing this, all the Taiwan Soldiers felt invigorated. Damn! They had survived a fierce battle and were still alive—much better than those who had fallen! Since their opponents had run out of ammunition, when else would be a better time to display their fearless heroism? They raised their flashlights and guns high while shouting loudly: "Charge! Capture the assassins! Avenge General Jiao! Serve our country! Be loyal to our party!" Damn it; they were just short of shouting about saving the world and bringing peace to Earth! Even Hong Xiaoyi felt her face flush at such shamelessness.
"Should we kill a few more?" Xin Yi asked Roxy while watching the swarm of Taiwan Soldiers charging up the hill. Although she was injured, she thought she could still take down a few more Taiwan Soldiers. However, Roxy shook her head and said, "Nope, we've done enough already. Let’s go before we get overwhelmed."
Roxy took Xin Yi's hand and ran in the opposite direction. The mountaintop wasn’t very large; within minutes they reached another side of the Cliff. The howling wind threatened to sweep away their clothes and hair as Xin Yi and Roxy held tightly onto each other’s hands. The warmth from their palms transmitted through their blood into each other's hearts, diminishing their fear of death at that moment as they felt connected.
A large group of Taiwan Soldiers had already surged to the mountaintop, with countless powerful flashlights illuminating it as bright as day. At that moment, they were astonished to see a pair standing hand in hand at the edge of the cliff; the fierce wind lifted their clothes and hair high into the air, making them appear like an ethereal couple transcending reality.
