While Xin Yi and the others were enjoying a lunch with the flavors of the Dai Ethnic Group, Yanming Shop Elder suddenly looked up at the sky obscured by the tree canopy and said in a low voice, "Someone is coming from behind! At least more than ten, and they are all armed!"
Upon hearing this, the group hurriedly stuffed the remaining rice balls into their mouths. Even if a battle was about to break out, they needed to eat first to have the strength to fight. Since they were being pursued, a little extra time didn't matter. Everyone knew that if someone was indeed chasing them, it would most likely be the Border Guard they encountered last night. As long as they followed the correct path, it would be easy for them to catch up; all they had to do was follow the trail left by Xin Yi and his group.
They quickly packed their belongings onto their backs and extinguished the fire on the ground until not a single spark remained. At this moment, several pairs of eyes turned to Xin Yi, silently asking him to make a decision: should they fight or flee? Xin Yi thought it best to consult Yanming Shop Elder since he was the Guide and might have experience in such matters. So, Xin Yi asked, "Elder, what should we do now? Should we run or confront them?"
"I told you last night not to engage with them because they are the Border Guard. If something goes wrong, there will be military forces searching the jungle. Although they might not catch us in the jungle, it would still be troublesome and waste a lot of time taking detours. So I think it's best not to confront them today. Of course, if you are confident in taking them all out at once, then it's up to you," Yanming Shop Elder said casually, indicating that he didn't take killing the Border Guard seriously.
"Let's do it! Brother Xin!" Topology exclaimed as he pulled the safety off his Type 79 submachine gun, ready for a showdown with the pursuing Taiwan Border Guard.
Xu Maogong and Roxy remained silent, waiting for Xin Yi's decision. After a moment of thought, Xin Yi said, "Let's find a place to hide first and see how things go. Everyone follow my lead; we mustn't let any of them escape!" He then glanced at Topology's submachine gun and added, "It's better to use handguns or set the submachine gun to single fire; we don't have many bullets, so let's not waste them on these border guards."
Topology immediately removed the safety from his submachine gun and drew out his 54-type 7.62mm military pistol from his waist. Xu Maogong and Roxy also skillfully readied their weapons. Xin Yi looked at Yanming Shop Elder and asked, "Elder, which type of gun are you accustomed to using?"
"I prefer using an SVD, but if that's not available, I can make do with a 54-type," Yanming Shop Elder replied without hesitation. After saying this, he realized he had fallen into Xin Yi's trap and chuckled, "Haha, you young man tried to trick me into revealing my background. Yes, I participated in the Y Self-Defense Counterattack War and captured an SVD from Y troops; I became quite adept with it."
Xin Yi knew about the SVD; it is also known as the Dragunov Sniper Rifle—a precision sniper rifle designed for military use that was one of the first of its kind in the world. Later on, Heavenly Pride Nation developed the Type 79 sniper rifle based on it. From Yanming Shop Elder's peculiar way of crossing rivers to his swift actions in cutting down the attacking Tricolor Viper, Xin Yi had begun to doubt his background as just a local farmer from Zhengkang County; his skills seemed too exceptional for that. Thus he had suddenly asked him about his preferred weapon earlier. Sure enough, Yanming Shop Elder answered without thinking twice until he realized what he had revealed about his experience in the Y Self-Defense Counterattack War.
"Haha, I suspected you were extraordinary! Then make do with this 54-type for now. Alright everyone, hide! Wait for my signal before firing!" Xin Yi said as he handed the 54-type pistol to Yanming Shop Elder while setting his Type 79 submachine gun to single fire mode.
Finding suitable cover in the jungle was quite easy; however, Xin Yi instructed everyone not to spread too far apart so they wouldn't get separated during combat. They each took positions about ten meters apart behind thick tree trunks. At this point, Xin Yi could hear the sounds of pursuers stepping on dry branches and rustling through bushes; it seemed they were getting close. He peeked out from behind a tree trunk to observe what was happening ahead. Sure enough, after a few minutes, he could see movement in the bushes—the pursuers had clearly located their previous campsite where they had made a fire.
Xin Yi even spotted two individuals dressed in Taiwan Soldiers' uniforms peeking out from behind some bushes as they scanned for signs of where Xin Yi and his group had rested earlier. Suddenly one soldier raised his M2 Carbine and fired a burst of bullets towards their hiding spot. The bullets shattered small branches in the bushes as larger tree limbs splintered under fire. Soon after that, more gunfire erupted; judging by the sound, it seemed like five Carbines were firing simultaneously. Xin Yi quickly withdrew his head back behind the thick tree trunk—getting hit by stray bullets was no joke.
The intense gunfire quieted for two minutes as the Taiwan Border Guard assessed whether anyone was still nearby. Fortunately, no one on Xin Yi's side had moved or made a sound. Then, from the bushes across the way came a rustling noise, followed by a voice exclaiming, "Damn it! Big Brother, those smugglers got away!"
Xin Yi lay on the ground, using a cluster of low shrubs for cover as he peered outside. He saw over a dozen Taiwan Soldiers emerging from their hidden positions, guns in hand, surrounding the area where Xin Yi and his group had just made a fire to rest. The officer leading them looked distinctly different from the other soldiers; while they were all dark and thin, typical locals, this officer was chubby and fair-skinned, likely transferred from another unit. They approached the pile of extinguished ashes, and the Chubby Officer reached into the cold remnants and suddenly shouted, "They haven't gone far! Everyone move forward closely and search carefully; we can definitely catch these smugglers! Brothers, it's time to make some money! Stay sharp! Whoever catches one gets an extra ten percent of the reward!"
At that moment, Xin Yi had his gun aimed at the Chubby Officer. With a pull of the trigger, the officer's chest would surely bloom with bright red blood. Just as Xin Yi's right index finger rested on the trigger, a sudden series of cracking sounds came from above in the jungle. Xin Yi looked up to see branches and leaves falling but couldn't discern what caused it. The Taiwan Soldiers' faces turned pale with fear as they raised their Carbines and began firing wildly while retreating in disarray, like frightened animals fleeing for their lives.
Xin Yi couldn't see what was causing their panic but was certain it was something terrifying; otherwise, such a well-armed group wouldn't be so frightened. Two of the Taiwan Soldiers had already abandoned shooting and turned to run forward. At that moment, a strong stench filled the air, making Xin Yi gag. He focused his gaze and saw a massive python's head hovering just above ground level, its gaping maw wide open—the source of that nauseating odor. Xin Yi felt his scalp tingle; he had encountered Jungle Pythons before during missions in the Amazon rainforest, but none compared to this enormous creature. Its head was at least the size of a soccer ball, and judging by its proportions, its body must be as thick as a large barrel and over ten meters long.
No wonder the Taiwan Soldiers were in such disarray; anyone would be terrified facing such a gigantic Jungle Python. With its massive mouth open wide enough to swallow a person whole, it was far better to be shot in the head than to face such a slow death inside a snake's belly. Being swallowed wouldn't lead to immediate death; one would suffocate slowly as the snake's mucus sealed off their airways before being digested into nothingness—an utterly horrifying thought.
The giant python slithered down to the ground, indeed as thick as a barrel and over ten meters long. The Taiwan Soldiers continued firing their Carbines at it. Despite its size, the python was surprisingly agile; it twisted its massive body on the ground to evade bullets. Although many bullets struck it, some angled shots failed to penetrate due to its thick scales deflecting them away. Even those that did penetrate seemed insignificant; they didn't slow its advance but rather provoked its fury.
The python thrashed wildly as it closed in on the last Taiwan Soldier. Suddenly, it reared up and lunged at him with its gaping maw! Just as it seemed that soldier would be swallowed whole, he quickly raised his Carbine and fired a burst directly into the python's mouth. The bullets found no scales inside its throat; every single round penetrated deep into its gullet. For the first time, the python felt real pain from gunfire and let out an enraged roar as it twisted away from further attacks.
Realizing that direct assaults weren't effective, the python changed tactics. It pressed its head against the ground and swung its tail—thick as a thigh—toward the Taiwan Soldiers with a thunderous whoosh. Wherever its tail swept through, bushes fell and small trees snapped under its immense power. The last few soldiers couldn't dodge in time; they were struck by that powerful tail and sent flying several meters into bushes and tree trunks. If they had been in an open space, they might have flown even farther. Though they didn't go far, being hit by that tail felt like being struck by a speeding car; only three or four managed to survive after crashing into bushes while others were left severely injured against tree trunks...
