After Director Zhong arrived in Longchuan, he immediately organized the case files to understand the situation. Upon discovering that Young Master Qiao was arrested for reasons connected to the same group of criminals, Director Zhong slammed the table in anger, his hair disheveled, and lamented, "Murder! He emphasized that this particularly heinous case had severe implications and needed to be resolved decisively to deliver justice to the victims and restore peace to Binhai. Director Zhong also noted that the Provincial Committee was taking this case very seriously; anyone attempting to act as a shield for the murderers or interfere with judicial fairness would face severe punishment.
Under Director Zhong's directives, the task force began analyzing the case. The analysis unanimously indicated that suspects Xin Yi, Niu Gensheng, and Shen Shanshan had clear motives for murder, were present at the crime scene when apprehended by police, and Niu Gensheng's fingerprints were found on the murder weapon. The direction of the case was very clear; they just needed to find additional corroborative evidence or get the suspects to confess, and it could be closed swiftly. This analysis pleased Director Zhong greatly; he admired his own wisdom and exceptional investigative skills. It seemed that within three days, this significant case would be successfully solved under his leadership, finally giving him a chance to impress Secretary Qiao. Perhaps if Secretary Qiao was pleased... Haha, if he could get a promotion, then that young female college student living in his apartment in Jinguancheng would surely admire him even more. With this thought, Director Zhong chuckled lewdly.
After finishing the case analysis meeting, Director Zhong immediately summoned the suspects for questioning. The three suspects were interrogated separately, with Director Zhong personally responsible for questioning Xin Yi. Xin Yi was brought into the interrogation room by two detectives from Longchuan City's Criminal Investigation Division. Since they had only arrived at the bureau last night and Lu Jianming had personally interrogated them until dawn, Xin Yi and his companions were still temporarily detained at the police station. The officers escorting Xin Yi were not from the special task force; they considered such menial tasks beneath them. Once inside the interrogation room, Xin Yi smirked as he sat down confidently in a chair meant for police officers instead of taking his place at the solitary chair in the center of the room.
After sitting for about half an hour, the iron door of the interrogation room finally swung open with a clang. Two middle-aged men in white short-sleeved shirts entered with briefcases. Hearing their footsteps, Xin Yi slightly opened his eyes and smiled at them while nodding in greeting, "Hello!"
The newcomers were momentarily taken aback by seeing someone sitting in what should have been their seats while smiling and greeting them. One of them, who appeared younger, even returned Xin Yi's smile and nod before suddenly remembering he was there as an interrogating officer while Xin Yi was a suspect. He quickly swallowed his greeting back down, feeling quite awkward and ridiculous. The other man shot him a sharp glare and loudly admonished Xin Yi, "Sit back where you belong!"
"Where should I sit?" Xin Yi feigned confusion as he asked. The younger officer felt a pang of sympathy seeing Xin Yi's innocent expression and pointed to the chair in the middle of the room saying, "You should sit there; this is our place."
"Oh, okay," Xin Yi quickly stood up and said to that officer: "Thank you; you are really a good person. You must have a higher rank than him; generally, those with higher ranks are more amiable. Those who shout and show off are usually just lackeys—ha ha! Am I right?"
The officer felt pleased by Xin Yi's words but couldn't show it too openly since he was standing next to someone who was truly in charge—Director Zhong of the Provincial Public Security Department Criminal Investigation Second Division—who was responsible for this case. However, being praised by others did satisfy his vanity somewhat; perhaps he did have some leadership qualities after all. Still, while feeling good inside, he dared not show it before someone like Director Zhong who was known for being thick-skinned; if he displeased him and made things difficult for him later on, it wouldn't be worth it. So he put on a stern face and said to Xin Yi: "What nonsense are you talking? This is where you should sit!"
"Director Zhong? Is that a big deal?" Xin Yi continued with his harmless demeanor asking: "And what do you mean my case? What case do I have?"
"Stop pretending! Sit down properly!" Director Zhong finally lost his temper. He had already studied this person's background; despite being young, he was an actual owner of a corporate group—how could someone like that possibly be foolish? If he wasn't foolish then he must be mocking him deliberately; it was infuriating. Director Zhong's anger flared as he shouted: "You deliberately murdered Secretary Qiao's son Josen and killed two detectives as well! How can you still ask what case this is? Stop holding onto any delusions; now that you've fallen into my hands, there's no escape!"
"Oh?" Xin Yi had settled comfortably into his seat in the middle of the room while calmly watching Director Zhong's furious outburst with a cold smile on his lips: "It seems I wasn't wrong; you really are just fit to be a lackey."
"You... what did you say?!" Director Zhong was completely enraged by Xin Yi's words. How dare a suspect speak to the officer interrogating him like that? It was nothing short of contempt, blatant contempt! Director Zhong's fists were clenched tightly, wishing he could pull out his gun and shoot this arrogant guy in front of him. However, after years in the officialdom, he was no longer an impulsive young man; he wouldn't do something so foolish. But he was quite familiar with manipulating the materials submitted to the prosecutor's office. With just a little adjustment, he could ruin you!
"I say you really are only fit to be a lackey. According to what you just said, you've already determined that I'm the murderer. If that's the case, why bother wasting your energy interrogating me? "How do you know all this so clearly? You..." Director Zhong blurted out after hearing Xin Yi's words. But as soon as he said it, he regretted it. By saying that, wasn't he admitting that he was being manipulated by Secretary Qiao? Such remarks could damage his leadership image and shouldn't be said lightly. His loose tongue could really get him into trouble; if this got out, Secretary Qiao would surely know how to deal with him. When he saw Xin Yi's triumphant smile, he suddenly understood that this person’s goal was to trap him into revealing information. All the acts of feigning madness and insulting him were merely tactics to provoke him into losing his guard and then suddenly throwing out that final sentence to ensnare him and expose Secretary Qiao's secrets. It turned out this was indeed a formidable opponent; under such circumstances, instead of being intimidated into submission, he managed to design a trap for himself. This person was not simple!
After confirming his suspicions, Xin Yi stopped pretending to be mad or foolish. He sat honestly in the middle of the room on a chair and answered their questions sincerely, which left the younger officer baffled. He thought to himself how strange this person's attitude was—one moment acting crazy and insulting the police, the next moment being sincere and cooperative.
In Xin Yi's presence, they couldn't extract any new information. Having witnessed Xin Yi's prowess, Director Zhong couldn't pull any tricks either. He knew traditional interrogation psychological tactics and good cop/bad cop routines wouldn't work on this person at all. So after hastily finishing the interrogation, they left the room. Naturally, someone would escort him back; however, this time it was directly to the detention center. In the car, Xin Yi saw Big Bull and Shen Shanshan again. Big Bull had recovered from last night's shock; aside from his slightly dazed expression, he remained as silly as ever. Upon seeing Xin Yi, he didn't care whether the escorting officers would stop him and shouted loudly, "Brother Xin! Why aren't we going home yet? I haven't eaten enough for two meals! If this goes on, I'm going to starve!"
Wang Wei was also in the car. Although he couldn't enter the special task force, they still had errands for him to run. When Xin Yi saw him, knowing that Wang Wei was personally responsible for escorting them this time, he smiled and nodded at Wang Wei before turning to Big Bull and saying, "It won't be long now; we'll go back in a couple of days. Just hang in there! When we get to a crowded place later on, if anyone bullies you, just hit them back and take their food—that way you'll get enough to eat."
Big Bull looked at Xin Yi in surprise and said, "Hit people and take their food? Wouldn't that make Big Bull a robber? How can that be okay? Didn't Brother Xin always tell me not to bully others?"
"Hehe, but everyone in the place we're going is bad people. If you don't hit them first, they'll bully you instead. So it's okay to bully them this time; we won't do it next time," Xin Yi explained with a smile.
"Okay! Whatever Brother Xin says goes! Whoever dares to mess with me will definitely get knocked down with one punch!" Big Bull declared while waving his fist as if showing off his strength.
