Peter saw Xin Yi daringly approaching, which was clearly a move towards death. Hiding behind the rocks, Peter coldly raised his Luger P89 pistol and aimed at Xin Yi. Peter had always been extremely confident in his shooting skills; hitting a target from a hundred paces was considered mediocre by Vulture standards. The usual training for Vulture involved moving targets, which provided no opportunity for proper aiming. As a result, the members of Vulture had developed the habit of shooting as soon as they raised their weapons. This seemingly simple action encompassed a complex system of abilities and judgments. If any part of this process was off, the bullet could miss the target by miles. First, the eyes detect a moving target; then the brain assesses the target's size, direction, speed, and environmental factors to determine its trajectory. Finally, based on their usual shooting actions and the bullet's flight speed, they calculate the intersection point where the bullet will meet the target. Thus, what appears to be a simple action is actually a refined human engineering feat.
With his right index finger on the trigger, Peter thought to himself, "Go meet your maker!" Just as he was about to pull the trigger, a sharp gunshot rang out from above on the road. Instinctively, Peter ducked his head as a searing bullet whizzed past his scalp and struck the rocks in front of him, sending debris flying into his face and causing pain to his skin. Without looking back, Peter fired several shots in the direction of the gunfire. The nearby Vulture Team Member also turned their weapon towards the source of the sound. However, that spot was empty, with only a cluster of low bushes being battered by their bullets. "Peter cursed under his breath: 'Damn! Cowardly turtle!'"
Initially, Xin Yi and his team could not accurately determine the specific location of Vulture, but this round of gunfire completely exposed their hiding place. Suddenly, Xin Yi straightened up and unleashed a barrage from his HK21. In a rapid "tat-tat-tat," bullets spun towards that area of rocks. Meanwhile, Qin Dali had also opened fire with his machine gun. The two guns crossed in a fan-like pattern over that region, unleashing dense firepower that sent rock fragments flying everywhere. Occasionally, fist-sized stones were also caught in the crossfire as they wreaked havoc in the area where Vulture was hiding. The overwhelming firepower forced them to keep their heads down behind the rocks, waiting for an opportunity during their opponent's magazine change.
Although HK21 had immense power, it also consumed ammunition at an alarming rate. For convenience, Xin Yi and his team had switched from belt-fed ammunition to magazines. While magazines are easier to carry, their capacity is limited. After this intense barrage, their magazines were already empty. Even for experienced shooters like Xin Yi and Qin Dali, changing magazines took several seconds—seconds that could cost lives in such a critical situation against elite international mercenaries like the Vulture Mercenary Corps.
As soon as the gunfire from Xin Yi stopped, two brothers from Beng Hu Lian quickly stepped forward with submachine guns to take over from HK21 and began firing fiercely at the rocky area. However, there is an essential difference between submachine guns and HK21 in terms of both speed and power; they were not on the same level at all. Upon hearing this different sound behind the rocks, Vulture Team Member immediately realized it was their chance. They were confident that during those few seconds while Xin Yi changed magazines, they could turn the tide of battle. All members of Vulture Team Member were top-notch marksmen equipped with Infrared Night Vision Goggles; they could easily eliminate these unaware locals.
Just as one of the Vulture Team Member lifted his head during a lull in submachine gun fire, another rain of bullets suddenly descended from above on their side near the road. Looking up revealed that a group armed with various firearms had taken position on the hillside and was firing wildly down at them. Several exposed members of Vulture Team Member were hit before they could react; two even had their heads blown apart by bullets and fell silently among the rocks by the riverside. Seeing this scene made Peter feel nauseous with anger; he almost spat blood in frustration. He had intended to surround them but ended up being surrounded instead. This battle was humiliating—not only did their initial ambush fail, but they were also counterattacked by enemy machine guns. To make matters worse, they now faced hidden enemies attacking from above.
Fortunately, their opponents lacked Infrared Night Vision Goggles; this barrage was mostly wild shooting without precision targeting. If they had been equipped with such goggles for accurate shots from above, it was likely that Peter's team would have suffered severe casualties by now. Peter fired several shots towards the hilltop but found it too well-hidden; only parts of weapons were visible—he couldn't even see any heads—so none of his shots hit anything. At this moment, both Xin Yi and Qin Dali had reloaded their magazines; bullets from HK21 flew toward them like venomous snakes spitting out venom.
Glancing at his teammates revealed that aside from two who had been shot in the head, four others were injured to varying degrees but remained silent behind cover listening for movements outside while waiting for an opportunity to turn things around. A wave of sadness washed over Peter. None of these battle-hardened soldiers feared death; even if he ordered them to charge into gunfire right now, there would be no dissent among them because as professional international mercenaries, death had been predetermined since they joined the organization. The rules of Vulture differed from other mercenary groups; once each member passed assessment and officially became part of Vulture, Peter would open an account in their name with substantial death compensation funds deposited into it. The beneficiary could be either themselves or anyone they designated; if any member died in battle, that money would immediately go to the designated beneficiary's hands. Therefore, all lives within Vulture no longer belonged solely to themselves but rather to all of Vulture. Hence none would disobey orders from their commander—even if those orders were beyond comprehension.
However, as commander of Vulture, Peter would never stand by and watch his teammates die needlessly. With rich combat and command experience over many years, he had always sought to achieve maximum victory with minimal casualties for Vulture. Of course, there was an exception during an operation in Lut Desert—this marked one of their most devastating failures since forming eight years ago—but now that sense of defeat returned to haunt him again due to his lack of understanding about current circumstances and underestimating his opponents' capabilities. He never expected such an insignificant gang from Heavenly Pride Nation would possess such formidable weaponry or that they could see through his trap—one that not only failed to ensnare them but instead trapped his own team members—a truly ironic twist where hunters became prey.
In this situation, he could only hope that David's team would turn things around; if they could break through enemy lines from behind while flanking them on both sides, there might still be a chance for redemption.
Meanwhile, David led eight members of Vulture Team Member swimming through river water towards Xin Yi's rear flank. Before entering the water, they had planned their landing spot near where Xin Yi's vehicles were parked at Riverside's center; however after entering the water,Xin Yi ordered their vehicles further towards rocky areas after some distance traveled on land before entering water again while holding breathers connected to River Surface throughout submerged movement without exposing themselves above water so snipers wouldn't spot them until emerging when estimating distances based on previous observations underwater only to find out vehicles had moved locations now three or four hundred meters away from intended landing site! Since they were already ashore there was no reason to return underwater again especially hearing sounds indicating Peter’s team seemed suppressed without any resistance left so without delay David waved signaling eight teammates sprinting towards vehicles aiming for fastest breakthrough against enemy rear defenses relieving pressure off Peter’s team granting opportunity for counterattack.
As they approached closer towards vehicles however several noticed through Infrared Night Vision Goggles that inside appeared completely empty! Had everyone gone after Peter? If so then let’s directly attack from behind! Cautiously approaching vehicles confirmed absence! David signaled leading several rushing towards direction where gunfire erupted densely ahead.
David and the others had just run a few dozen meters when a piercing gunshot rang out behind them. David felt a sudden numbness in his back and watched helplessly as dozens of bullets, accompanied by blood and flesh, flew out of his body. He then saw his own body collapse lifelessly onto Riverside, while another version of himself floated upwards like a feather, ascending to heaven! The group of nine who had swum over were mercilessly turned into a honeycomb by the bullets from the HK21! It was no joke; at such a short distance, the HK21's incredible penetrating power could easily pierce through steel plates, let alone flesh and blood! Caught off guard, the nine of them ended their glorious lives without even a sound. Each member of the Vulture Team was a killing machine capable of taking on ten opponents, yet in their final moments, they could only meet their end in such a dismal manner. They could not be considered to have died honorably in battle; rather, they were slaughtered without value. Such a death would bring them an indelible shame at the end of their military careers. However, there was one fortunate aspect: they all departed together. Once they reached heaven, they could pass the time playing mahjong together—eight people making two tables, while the remaining one could boil water for tea.
