Riverside Nine Li Sand, the night was as dark as ink, and the occasional calls of night birds echoed in the pitch-black sky, adding a touch of terror to the already desolate Riverside. The murky river flowed heavily downward, winding like a beast ready to devour everything, its gaze fixed on the silent Riverside.
Suddenly, a bright beam of light pierced the night sky, accompanied by the roar of an engine. A medium-sized Iveco passenger bus turned the corner and drove straight down the road toward the center of Riverside. The vehicle stopped in the middle of Riverside, and several figures jumped out, their shiny blades glinting ominously in the darkness. The leader shouted, "Dali, this is Nine Li Sandbar. Why haven't those guys arrived yet? Tell Brothers to wait in the car for a bit; we'll get out once they arrive."
"Yes, Brother Xin," Qin Dali replied.
The newcomers were none other than Xin Yi and Beng Hu Lian along with a dozen brothers. The ones who just got out were Xin Yi, Qin Dali, Topology, and Summer Wind. Each of them held a gleaming knife, embodying the typical image of a gangster. If they had each been chewing on half-burned cigarettes, their appearance would have been perfect—an archetypal thug look. Just then, Summer Wind pulled out a pack of Inferior Cigarettes from his pocket. Each of them took one, and with a "click," they lit their windproof lighters and took deep puffs... cough cough cough... A series of urgent coughs erupted from Summer Wind and Topology, both doubling over as they coughed uncontrollably. Fortunately, it was nighttime, so their flushed faces were not visible; however, it was certain that they were both red-faced from choking. Xin Yi chuckled, "Hehehe... you two really think you're gangsters now. How can you inhale so deeply if you can't even smoke properly? It's no wonder you're choking."
Topology, frustrated, threw his cigarette to the ground and stomped on it twice, saying, "Your tobacco is too harsh! I should have brought some cigars; that would have been cooler."
Summer Wind wholeheartedly agreed with Topology, quickly chiming in, "Yeah, cigars for next time!"
"If you want to smoke cigars, that's fine," Qin Dali laughed. "But cigars are on your own dime; the company won't reimburse you."
"Stingy!" Summer Wind retorted. "Today’s cigarettes should be reimbursed!"
"Hehehe... You call me stingy? You want me to reimburse you for a few bucks worth of cigarettes? Summer Wind, I've noticed you're getting more talkative these days," Qin Dali replied with a grin.
While these few were joking around and smoking in the center of Riverside, someone behind a distant rock was carefully observing everything through an infrared telescope. After watching for a while, he handed the telescope to someone beside him and whispered, "It seems they are unprepared; they only brought knives. There are still twelve people in the vehicle, and there's no sign of firearms detected. However, I can't be sure if they're hidden in the car."
The person next to him took the telescope and looked over before retracting it after a moment. "Although there are no signs of firearms detected, we shouldn't underestimate their Swordsmanship. Let's avoid close combat with them; we should shoot as soon as we enter effective range—leave no one behind!"
After saying this, he waved his hand. At that moment, over twenty shadows emerged from behind various rocks and began to converge toward the center. Judging by their equipment, this group was even better equipped than active-duty soldiers from the Heavenly Pride Nation. All wore standard Jungle Camouflage Uniforms, equipped with Infrared Night Vision Goggles. In addition to a Ruger P89 9mm pistol at their waists, they also carried KF-59-AMP submachine guns with entire rows of magazines attached. They wore long military boots and had a Jungle Combat Knife and a multifunctional combat dagger sheathed on either side. Each carried a backpack likely filled with various necessities and ammunition tools.
The group silently surrounded them while the central figure began using hand signals to assign combat tasks. Once completed, everyone raised their hands in an unusual military salute before dispersing quietly into the night to encircle Xin Yi and his companions at the center of Riverside. Their formation was fan-shaped, closing in from three sides while leaving only one side open toward the riverbank.
After taking the last puff of his cigarette, Xin Yi flicked the butt away in a graceful arc. The glowing red tip cut through the dense darkness and quickly vanished into the impenetrable night. Suddenly, a sharp gunshot rang out, causing the group that was converging towards Riverside to halt abruptly. They turned their gaze toward the direction of the sound. Due to the limited visibility of their Infrared Night Vision Goggles, they could not pinpoint the exact location of the shooter; they only deduced that it came from the mountain behind Riverside. The person in charge immediately signaled for everyone to lie down. Over twenty individuals dropped to the ground, switching their Luger Pistols for KF Assault Pistols. The commander lay on the ground and picked up a pair of infrared binoculars to look toward the source of the gunfire, only to spot a sniper rifle equipped with a scope aimed back at him. Behind the rifle was a head mostly covered by a black woolen hat, and at that moment, the corner of the mouth revealed a slight smirk of disdain.
The commander reluctantly lowered the binoculars and gestured for his team to prepare for an attack as he got back up. However, upon glancing towards Riverside, he noticed that the headlights of an Iveco vehicle had been extinguished without him realizing when it happened. The few people who had been chatting and smoking in front of the car were also nowhere to be seen. Peering through the car window, he saw no sign of life inside. Alarmed, he thought to himself that he had been too careless and had fallen into their trap. However, underestimating his battle-hardened Vulture Mercenary Corps was a grave mistake on their part. There was nowhere for them to hide; they were merely cowering inside the vehicle without showing themselves. Even if they chose to be turtles hiding in their shells, his men could easily turn that vehicle into scrap metal, leaving them with no place to hide afterward.
This group consisted of Peter and his Vulture Mercenary Corps. They had designed this plan to lure Xin Yi here for two purposes: one was to avenge their comrade John, and the other was to execute a mission assigned by Smith-Tang. Smith-Tang had issued a kill order against Xin Yi and his Three Tiger Group because they posed a threat to his safety and interests. The fat man named He Zheng and his accomplices at Celebrity Western Restaurant were also arranged by Smith-Tang with the intent of drawing Xin Yi and his people into this trap for a complete annihilation. Josen had already been detained by the police, so Smith-Tang did not have detailed knowledge about Xin Yi's forces; he only knew there were some people under Xin Yi’s command but lacked specifics about their numbers or weaponry. However, based on Peter's previous descriptions, it was clear that Xin Yi had skilled Kung Fu practitioners among his ranks. To ensure success, Smith-Tang specifically instructed Peter to bring all members of Vulture Mercenary Corps who had arrived at Heavenly Pride along for a complete extermination.
Although Peter had previously clashed with Xin Yi's subordinates and witnessed their peculiar swordsmanship, he was confident in his Vulture team. With over twenty members, they could easily eliminate an entire company of regular troops; dealing with a group of civilian fighters with some Kung Fu skills would be child's play. However, he never expected that they would fall into an ambush right upon arrival; clearly, their opponents were well-prepared and had positioned snipers on the mountain behind them. Although that sniper was beyond effective range, it was evident that their purpose was not to shoot but merely to observe their movements. As Peter's team stealthily approached within effective range, the sniper acted as an observer and fired a warning shot to alert those in between to take cover. Given how well-coordinated their opponent's plan was, it seemed they had anticipated or guessed Peter's strategy; this battle would not be easy.
The Vulture team had always been known for their courage and ability to tackle tough battles. Gritting his teeth, Peter waved his left hand forward decisively and charged ahead! They were just ten steps away from entering effective range; once there, they would unleash heavy firepower on the vehicle hiding their enemies! Peter quickly closed in on effective range, aiming his gun at one of the car's tires to cut off their escape route.
At that moment, both windows of the Iveco suddenly rolled down simultaneously, revealing dark gun barrels protruding from each window. Peter's heart sank as he recognized those as submachine guns—antiquities from decades ago—but despite being old models, they still possessed formidable lethality. These submachine guns were typically used by elite units on special missions due to their long-range capabilities and strong penetration power—comparable even to single-shot sniper rifles. Their only drawback was a slower firing rate than standard machine guns—about two-thirds as fast—because they prioritized range and penetration over rapid fire. Nevertheless, they remained favored by many military forces and had earned significant accolades on World War II battlefields. However, due to newer firearms emerging later on, these once-heroic weapons gradually faded from history; now they could only be seen in World War II museums showcasing their former glory. To see one still operational today was unexpected—it hadn't even been placed on display but was instead fulfilling its original deadly function: extermination.
Peter could no longer afford to signal; he shouted urgently, "Fall back!" Although his Vulture team boasted exceptional combat prowess, they were still flesh-and-blood beings; with just a few Lugers and KFs against such lethal weaponry would be futile. He quickly ordered everyone to retreat.
True to their training as experienced mercenaries, upon hearing Peter's command, none hesitated even slightly; they swiftly retreated while maintaining their aim toward the target—backing away while keeping their weapons raised.
Just as Peter finished speaking and before anyone could retreat more than a few steps, gunfire erupted from the protruding barrels of the car windows as bullets flew out in rapid succession…
