The man in black suddenly opened his eyes wide. He flicked the cigarette butt in his left hand towards the source of the sound. Following the trajectory of the crimson cigarette butt across the night sky, a blurry figure appeared in his line of sight. He raised the gun in his right hand and fired.
At the same time, three others who had surrounded him also opened fire. The dense gunfire rang out, and the man in black trembled as he fell into a pool of blood. Peter walked over with his gun drawn, while another person ran towards his companion, shouting, "John! John!... Peter, John is dead!" That person turned to Peter.
Upon hearing those words, a smile suddenly appeared on the face of the man in black, but it quickly froze as he tilted his head. Peter kicked the corpse of the man in black fiercely without saying a word and bent down to search him. The search yielded only half a pack of cigarettes and a lighter; there was nothing else of value. The group got into the vehicle and set off again towards Longchuan. Peter sat in the passenger seat of the business car, frowning deeply. In his hand was a deformed bullet with a small hole drilled through its tip, attached to an iron clasp connected by a chain that hung around his neck. Fellow soldiers who served with Peter in the Lusang Marine Corps knew the origin of this bullet; it was from when a squad of Marines forcefully landed at Bohai Bay during the Bohai War. After landing, they encountered little resistance and pushed deep into enemy territory to seize an important military stronghold near Bohai Bay. However, they fell into a trap set by the Bohai army near that stronghold and were surrounded.
Peter was the deputy commander at that time; his commander was John, who had enlisted alongside him. They had always worked well together.
They held out for two days and nights within the encirclement of the Bohai army before finally breaking through at great cost—over a hundred team members' bodies were left behind on the battlefield. As they broke through, John and Peter organized a rear guard while crossing a raging river and blowing up the only bridge behind them to leave their enemies stranded on the other side. The river was treacherous but not wide; sniper bullets rained down from across the river as they tried desperately to take out as many enemies as possible. One sniper had Peter in his sights—the deputy commander with different insignia on his shoulder. Just as a bullet whizzed toward Peter's forehead, John leaped up and took that fatal shot for him. The bullet spun rapidly as it pierced John's heart; he died saving Peter.
Peter dug out that deformed bullet from John's heart and made it into a necklace that he wore ever since. Later on, Peter was promoted to squad commander and kept John's brother by his side even after retiring and forming Vulture Mercenary Corps. He took care of John's brother because he knew that his life had been saved by John's sacrifice; for soldiers, repaying such debts is simple—one life for another. His intention in keeping John's brother close was so that if John ever faced danger again, he could take his place.
However, what Peter never expected was that he wouldn't even fulfill this last wish; he watched helplessly as John died right before him. All of this was due to that damned man in black; he never anticipated such a powerful counterattack at death's door—he had underestimated the enemy's strength too much. As commander of Vulture and John's superior, he felt he had failed—not only Vulture but also John.
Peter yanked off the chain around his neck and vowed fiercely, "I swear! No matter which faction it is, I will make you pay for your blood debts!"
Just as two vehicles turned around a corner and disappeared into darkness, two medium-sized Iveco vans approached from another direction. The Iveco followed along where those two vehicles had gone. Inside one Iveco van were Qin Dali, Zhong Kai, and Topology gathered around a map of Longchuan under the light inside the vehicle, studying their route.
Among them, only Zhong Kai was local to Longchuan. He pointed at a spot on the map and said, "This is our current location; about ten minutes ahead is an old state-owned chemical plant that seems to have been bankrupt for many years. Other than that, there aren't any factories nearby."
"If we drive from downtown to that chemical plant, how long will it take?" Qin Dali asked while looking at the map.
"Starting from downtown should take about half an hour; it should match what Tian Rui mentioned," Zhong Kai replied after thinking for a moment.
"Good, let's head directly to the chemical plant. Remember to turn off all lights one kilometer away from our target and coast without power five hundred meters out before disembarking while staying concealed. Zhong Kai, you lead one team for cover while Team Two follows me inside! Make sure to relay this plan to our brothers in the following vehicles," Qin Dali commanded.
The two cars quickly arrived outside the Chemical Plant, turning off their lights a thousand meters away and shutting down the engines five hundred meters away. After everyone got out of the vehicles, they swiftly began to act according to the planned strategy. Zhong Kai led a team for cover while the second team, under Qin Dali's command, advanced by flanking. They soon entered the interior of the Chemical Plant building, which was already empty. After lifting the alert, Qin Dali ordered everyone to conduct a thorough search of the entire factory area, leaving no valuable clues overlooked.
During the search, they discovered the wreckage of Tian Rui's destroyed phone, shattered glass windows, scattered bullet casings behind a flowerbed, and two pools of fresh blood that had not yet congealed. Upon finding those two pools of blood, everyone understood what had happened. Each person kept their lips tightly sealed; it seemed that Beng Hu Lian's real battle was just beginning.
Qin Dali looked grimly at the two pools of blood on the ground. Suddenly, he bent down and picked up a cigarette butt from the ground. Using his flashlight to examine it closely, he then said firmly, "Brothers! From the traces at the scene, Tian Rui is a true hero! Not only did he provide us with valuable intelligence, but he also killed at least one enemy in the final moments. No matter what happened to Tian Rui, he must have been taken by the enemy. In the Capital Military District Hospital, Shen Shanshan lay quietly on her hospital bed, her pale face devoid of color. Xin Yi held her small hand and gazed at her silently while Big Bull stood beside Xin Yi, awkwardly trying to comfort him. "Brother Xin, don't worry; Sister Shen will be fine. She will wake up... With a vacant gaze fixed on the ceiling for a moment, she then turned her head to look around curiously at everything in the hospital room...
Xin Yi walked out of the bathroom and suddenly turned around to see an incredible scene. Shen Shanshan was sitting on the hospital bed, staring blankly at everything in the room. Xin Yi felt a surge of joy in his heart, thanking heaven that Shanshan had finally woken up! He smiled at Shen Shanshan, his nose tinged with emotion as tears rolled down his cheeks. "Shanshan! You finally woke up!" Xin Yi exclaimed.
Shen Shanshan was startled by Xin Yi's voice, her confused gaze shifting to him. Suddenly, her whole body trembled, and her eyes revealed extreme fear as she shouted, "Who are you?! Don't come near me! You're a liar! Stay away!" As she yelled, she curled up in the corner of the bed, grabbing a pillow to shield her head, her body shaking uncontrollably.
Xin Yi was taken aback. What was happening with Shen Shanshan? Did she not even recognize him? He slowly moved closer to the bed, speaking softly, "Shanshan, it's me, I'm Xin Yi. Don't you remember me?"
"Xin Yi? Who is Xin Yi?" Shen Shanshan lowered the pillow for a moment, seemingly trying hard to recall the name. But when she saw Xin Yi moving closer to the bed, she immediately screamed in fear again, "Don't come near me! I don't know you! Stay away!"
At that moment, the door to the hospital room suddenly opened. Mother Shen entered carrying a lunchbox. When she saw the scene in the room, she rubbed her eyes in disbelief. Once she confirmed that everything was real and that her daughter had indeed woken up and was crouching on the bed, Mother Shen dropped the lunchbox in shock and exclaimed, "Shanshan! My daughter! You finally woke up! I was so worried about you!" She rushed toward Shen Shanshan.
Shen Shanshan let out a terrified scream and jumped off the bed, grabbing miscellaneous items and fruits from the bedside table and throwing them wildly at Mother Shen while shouting, "Don't come near me! You're all liars! Stay away!"
Shen Shanshan had lost her mind!
