Once again at the mall, following Shen Shanshan's suggestion, they chose an expensive Jade Pendant for Mother Shen. The two then drove to the Military District Command's family compound. When they arrived at the entrance, the guards stopped them. After Shen Shanshan negotiated for a while, they were finally allowed to enter. Once back in the car, Shen Shanshan pouted and said angrily, "These guards are so rigid, it drives me crazy! I'll have my mom get you a pass later; it will be more convenient for you to come and go."
Xin Yi smiled noncommittally, unsure if there would be another chance to visit in the future. Under Shen Shanshan's guidance, the car entered the largest courtyard of the family compound, where Shen Liwei was waiting at the entrance. After Xin Yi got out of the car, Shen Liwei complained, "What took you so long? Did you have to put on makeup like a girl?"
"What are you talking about, Brother?!" Shen Shanshan was displeased upon hearing this. If her beloved hero was being called a girl, anyone would be upset. Of course, her future husband was more important than her brother. Shen Shanshan complained loudly, "We're here to buy gifts for our parents! You think Xin Yi is just some rough guy who doesn't understand manners like you?"
"Hey, I'm a rough guy; can't I say anything?" Shen Liwei chuckled awkwardly. "Come on, don't be mad, little sister. By the way, do I get a gift too?"
"You want one?" Shen Shanshan grinned mischievously.
"Yes, I do," Shen Liwei replied, putting on a pitiful expression.
"I'll tell you this: even if you want one, there isn't any! Hehehe..." Shen Shanshan laughed triumphantly as she raised her head to look at Shen Liwei.
"Alright! Xin Yi, you're really not being fair!" Seeing Shen Shanshan's smug expression, Shen Liwei decided to tease her. He knew exactly where his sister's weakness lay and deliberately raised his voice to scold Xin Yi, "You only know how to flatter your father-in-law and mother-in-law! Aren't I your brother-in-law too? Why do they get gifts and we don't?!"
Sure enough, when Shen Shanshan heard this from Shen Liwei, her face turned red as she stomped her foot in a huff and said, "Brother! You're so annoying! I'm not talking to you anymore!" With that, she lowered her head and hurried inside, leaving Shen Liwei laughing heartily: "Hahaha... Look at you! Trying to argue with your brother? You're still too young for that! Hahaha..."
Not only did Shen Shanshan flee in embarrassment, but even Xin Yi felt a bit awkward. This Shen Liwei really dared to say anything; he openly acknowledged his identity as her brother-in-law as if he were afraid someone would compete with him for it.
"Ahem..." Xin Yi cleared his throat and said, "Li Wei, don't say things like that; you've scared Shanshan away."
"Hehe, she wasn't scared; she's just embarrassed. What do you mean by that? Don't tell me you don't want to be my sister's husband! If you had that intention, I'd make sure you couldn't take care of yourself!" Shen Liwei threatened by raising his fist as if Xin Yi were just meat on his chopping board. However, he didn't realize that last time at the hospital when Xin Yi fought him, it was like playing around; could he really make him unable to take care of himself? He needed to have that kind of strength first.
Xin Yi was not in the mood to chat with him and quickly said, "Alright, let's go inside. You don't expect me to stand here and talk about useless things, do you?"
"Hey, right, let's go in then," Shen Liwei seemed to suddenly understand something: "What are you talking about? What do you mean by useless things? Clarify your words!"
However, Xin Yi just turned his back on him and walked into Shen Shanshan's living room first. Shen Liwei hurriedly followed a few steps behind, only to see Xin Yi already speaking with Mother Shen, who was sitting on the sofa: "Auntie, this is a small gift I bought on the way here. I don't know what you like, so please don't dislike it!" As he spoke, Xin Yi handed over the Jade Pendant he had just bought at the mall.
A smile blossomed on Mother Shen's face as she received it, examining it carefully while politely saying, "This child really knows how to be considerate. You came over without needing to bring a gift... Oh my! Is this authentic Burmese Jade?! How much did this cost? Hmm, I really like it. Thank you, little Xin!" Mother Shen held the Jade Pendant in her hands, playing with it; even Bai could tell how much she adored this piece. It was no surprise; that little item cost Xin Yi eighty-eight thousand eight hundred eighty-eight. As the saying goes, gold has a price but jade is priceless; however, this was ridiculously expensive! Xin Yi wasn't upset about the money; he just thought it was absurd for a piece of green stone to be priced higher than ten large water buffaloes. If Big Bull were present, he would surely scold Brother Xin for being foolish.
In the living room, Xin Yi didn't see any sign of Shen Dahai. Wasn't he supposed to want to meet him? Where was he? Holding onto the three gifts meant for Shen Dahai, he felt awkward about whether to give them to Mother Shen. While she admired the Jade Pendant, she seemed to notice Xin Yi's slight embarrassment and smiled as she said, "What you're holding is a gift for your uncle, right? He's upstairs in his study." Turning her head towards Shen Shanshan, who was sitting on the sofa with her head down and blushing, she added, "Shanshan, take little Xin upstairs to meet your dad!"
"Okay." Shen Shanshan replied in a voice softer than a mosquito's buzz and couldn't bear to look at Xin Yi. She stood up and turned towards the stairs; she was still shy from what Shen Liwei had just said.
With a wry smile, Xin Yi had no choice but to follow behind Shen Shanshan upstairs. When they reached the study door, Shen Shanshan gently knocked. A strong authoritative voice came from inside: "Come in!"
Carefully pushing open the door, Shen Shanshan stepped inside and said softly, "Dad, Xin Yi is here."
"Mm, let him in. You can go out now." The authoritative voice sounded again. After stepping out, Shen Shanshan gave Xin Yi a knowing glance and whispered in his ear, "My dad has a bad temper; please don't make him angry. Thank you."
Understanding her concern, Xin Yi nodded at her and pushed open the door to enter. Inside the study sat a middle-aged man in his forties who was focused on a map laid out on his desk. He occasionally made notes on it with a pen and seemed completely oblivious to Xin Yi's entrance without even lifting his head.
As Xin Yi stood at the desk's edge, only then did Shen Dahai glance up at him briefly before coldly saying, "Have a seat." Then he returned his attention to the map as if treating Xin Yi like air. However, Xin Yi remained calm and unbothered; he knew very well that this was a tactic used by people who thought highly of themselves. They often ignored you while pretending to be busier than anyone else. Generally speaking, those with less patience would be thrown off by such silent indifference and lose their confidence quickly. This tactic could be quite effective; after all, not many young people could withstand it.
But what kind of person was Xin Yi? These tricks seemed childish and ineffective before him. If you wanted to play pretend, then he would play along. With that thought in mind, he silently stood beside the desk and took this opportunity to observe the young man who had become a military district commander at such an early age: Shen Dahai.
Shen Dahai had a robust physique. According to Xin Yi's estimation, he was about six feet tall, with a broad back and a strong build. His thick eyebrows and large eyes complemented his jet-black hair, which was cut short and stood upright like a series of spears, exuding an air of intimidation. Despite his round face and large ears, he did not possess the typical potbelly of a middle-aged man, indicating that he likely exercised regularly. Although he was currently leaning over his desk, it was still evident that he emanated the fierce aura characteristic of someone who had experienced war. To be honest, it was hard to imagine what kind of position would suit someone like him if he were not a general; he was the very embodiment of a military commander. Xin Yi thought this to himself, feeling an increased respect for Shen Dahai.
In reality, Shen Dahai was not studying any maps; the map in front of him was merely one he had retrieved from a few years ago during a military competition between the red and blue forces. It was already deeply ingrained in his mind, so there was no need for further study. Xin Yi's deduction was correct; Shen Dahai intended to use this silent indifference to undermine Xin Yi and dampen his youthful enthusiasm. He had already instructed people to investigate Xin Yi and knew that he was relatively accomplished at a young age. In Shen Dahai's view, such individuals often carried some arrogance from their early successes, so he deliberately adopted this demeanor to greet Xin Yi. After all, it would be inappropriate for a high-ranking military commander to sit anxiously waiting for his future son-in-law to arrive. If he were to do that, it would not align with his identity as a commander or general.
While Shen Dahai pretended to study the map, Xin Yi was carefully observing him. Before long, Shen Dahai sensed something was off; why did his usual tactic seem ineffective today? At this moment, Xin Yi should have been fidgety and restless, yet instead, Shen Dahai felt an uncomfortable sense of being exposed. The penetrating gaze from Xin Yi made him uneasy.
After enduring several more minutes, Shen Dahai could no longer tolerate it. He put down his pencil and let out a sigh, feigning realization as he glanced at Xin Yi and said, "Oh, I’ve been so focused on my work that I forgot about you. By the way, your name is... what is it again?"
Xin Yi smiled and replied, "My name is Xin Yi." However, internally he thought, "You can keep pretending; you don’t even know my name and yet you expect me to meet you? Aren't you worried that people will find out how idle you are as a military commander?"
Despite these thoughts, Xin Yi could not voice them aloud. He placed the box in his hand on the desk and said, "Commander Shen, I apologize for my abrupt visit. This is a small gift I brought for you; I hope you won't find it lacking."
Shen Dahai didn't even glance at the box on the desk and coldly remarked, "The incident at Riverside Nine Li Sand on the night of the sixteenth—was that caused by you?"
"Oh, I heard from Commander Shen that it was fishermen using explosives to catch fish. I don’t understand why Commander Shen would think I would go fishing with explosives; I'm not a fisherman," Xin Yi replied calmly. Shen Liwei had already stated that the matter had been resolved; he did not believe that Shen Dahai would truly pursue this issue now. It seemed more like another attempt to suppress his spirit.
Hearing Xin Yi's relaxed response, Shen Dahai slammed his hand on the table, causing the gift box to jump slightly. He shouted loudly, "Do you think such nonsense can fool me?! Let me tell you, the military has already set its sights on you! You better behave yourself!"
