"Find a darker place to park," Xin Yi said calmly.
"What... what?" Although Shu Rui could tell from Xin Yi's expression that he wasn't planning anything inappropriate, her heart couldn't help but race.
"We're being followed. Stop the car and we'll switch; I'll drive."
Finally, they stopped in the shadow of a building. Just as Shu Rui was about to open the door, Xin Yi grabbed her and said, "Don't get out. Recline the seat and move to the back." The Lamborghini's low body meant they both had to crawl to the back to switch positions. Due to the limited space, their bodies inevitably brushed against each other, causing Shu Rui to feel flustered, her cheeks turning red. Thankfully, it was dark enough that it wasn't noticeable. After switching seats, her heart continued to race as she sat there in a daze.
"What are you daydreaming about? Buckle your seatbelt!" Xin Yi's calm voice snapped her back to reality. She hurriedly fastened her seatbelt but pouted, thinking, "Why is he so grumpy? No sense of romance!"
Xin Yi wasn't thinking about what Shu Rui was pondering at all. He didn't know if the people behind were targeting him or Shu Rui. Based on his deductions, it should be Josen's actions aimed at him, but it was also possible that Shu Rui had enemies too. For instance, that fat guy from the Golden Dragon Group at today's auction—who could guarantee he wouldn't harbor resentment and take action? Regardless of who it was, since they were here, he would deal with it. Although he didn't want to kill anyone directly, causing a traffic accident or something similar seemed quite normal too, Xin Yi thought wickedly as the car shot off like an arrow.
The two people in the car behind saw the vehicle in front stop and thought it might be that drunk again needing to throw up, so they parked on the side of the road. This job was easy for them; after all, it was just following a woman and figuring out where she lived. They sat in the car smoking and chatting casually when suddenly they saw the car in front dart away and quickly followed.
"Brother Qiang, do you think they've noticed us?" asked the red-haired man in the passenger seat.
Brother Qiang pressed down on the accelerator and replied while keeping his eyes on the car ahead, "Who cares if they have? What can one woman do to us? If she makes me angry, I'll just take care of her myself." Brother Qiang laughed lewdly.
"That might not be good. Boss only told us to follow her; if something happens, we won't be able to explain," the red-haired man said worriedly.
"What are you scared of? After we take care of her, we can scare her into submission. Then we can deliver her straight to Boss; it might even earn us some credit," Brother Qiang said confidently.
"Hey! That's true! Did you see how hot that woman is? Not only is her face beautiful, but her figure is top-notch too! Wow! It would be amazing to have her!" The red-haired man swallowed hard with a lewd expression as he fantasized about that wonderful scene.
"Stop talking nonsense! Hold on tight; I'm going to speed up! And let me go first!" Brother Qiang couldn't hide his excitement as he grinned mischievously.
Xin Yi glanced disdainfully at the car behind through the rearview mirror. If he wanted to escape, he could have easily lost them by now; he was deliberately keeping them close. Although the car was moving fast, he made sure they could keep up. He wanted to toy with them; after all, Lijie had already gone home to Silent Screen Island and there was nothing else going on. Whether those behind could escape unscathed depended on their luck. But little did they know that Xin Yi's playful attitude had already sealed their fate.
Sitting beside him, Shu Rui felt a bit nervous due to the high-speed driving but wasn't afraid at all; this sense of security came from being next to this man. She had witnessed Xin Yi's skills before—at Hong Tianhu's birthday banquet when he swiftly took down six burly men as if it were child's play. How could she fear a few petty stalkers? Watching Xin Yi's relaxed demeanor, she knew he must be planning to have some fun with their pursuers before dealing with them later. With such a man by her side, what was there to fear?
As Xin Yi drove, he casually turned on the car stereo, and soft music filled the cabin. He even hummed along lightly with the rhythm, looking as relaxed as a tourist sunbathing on a beach. Shu Rui turned to look at him and thought, "This is what a real man is—calm under pressure and unflappable in crisis..." She used every flattering adjective she could think of until her gaze began to blur.
"Sit tight! Brace your feet and hold onto something!" Xin Yi shouted loudly, pulling Shu Rui back from her daydreaming. She turned forward and exclaimed, "Oh my! How did we end up on Sanqiao?!"
Sanqiao is the third bridge connecting north and south Longchuan City. With Longchuan's rapid development and increased transportation needs, the original two bridges were no longer sufficient. Thus, the Longchuan City government decisively decided to build Sanqiao! Construction was underway vigorously despite some public discontent over issues like relocation and land use—what could a few troublesome citizens do against the great wheel of historical progress?
However, the key issue was that this Sanqiao bridge symbolizing Longchuan's development wasn't completed yet; there was still a large gap several dozen meters wide in between! Were they really going to drive into the river?
"What are you doing?!" Shu Rui shouted nervously. "There's no road ahead! Are you trying to commit suicide?!"
Xin Yi smiled and didn't respond, simply locking the car doors.
The sound of crashing continued as Xin Yi knocked down all the warning signs in front. Fortunately, these signs were not heavy and did not significantly affect the car; it was just a matter of repainting, or so Xin Yi thought. But Shu Rui did not share this view; the car would require major repairs, at least a return to the manufacturer for a complete repaint. Touch-ups would never look good. However, that was not the most important issue at hand. What was crucial was what Xin Yi intended to do. Was he planning to drive into the river or lure the cars behind them into it? That would be disastrous.
The two gentlemen behind were also out of luck. They were not locals familiar with Longchuan's road conditions, and with Xin Yi knocking down all the warning signs, they were now too flustered to pay attention to the road.
The distance to the cliff edge was closing in rapidly. Shu Rui's hands were soaked with sweat, gripping the armrest which felt slippery. His heart raced uncontrollably, but when he glanced at Xin Yi, he saw a calm and relaxed expression. He thought to himself, "What kind of person is this? Does he really see human lives as so insignificant?"
One hundred meters...
Fifty meters...
Thirty meters...
Twenty meters...
Ten meters...
Five meters...
Shu Rui shut his eyes in terror, thinking it was over; he was doomed. But at least dying together with him could be considered a small blessing amidst the misfortune...
"Skreeech..." A sharp sound of tires screeching against the ground echoed as long black marks were left on the surface. The smell of burning rubber filled the air as the Lamborghini executed a beautiful drift, its front end already turning in another direction.
A car sped past outside, illuminated by the Lamborghini's headlights. Inside, two people looked utterly terrified, their eyes wide and mouths forming exaggerated "O" shapes. But this scene was fleeting; that car maintained its high speed and continued moving forward for some distance before gracefully plunging towards the river surface...
"How brave," Xin Yi remarked.
The Lamborghini slowly turned back. After a long moment, Shu Rui finally regained his composure and turned to Xin Yi, asking, "Will they die?"
"That depends on their fate. If I wanted them dead, I would have led them onto Mountain Road; in that case, they wouldn't have had any chance," Xin Yi replied calmly.
"If they die, won't we become murderers?" Shu Rui asked, somewhat frightened.
"President Shu, here's how it is: We finished dinner and were heading home when we noticed we were being followed by criminals. In our panic to escape, we ended up driving onto an unfinished Sanqiao bridge. When we reached the end, we slammed on the brakes, but the criminals' car didn't stop and fell into the river. That's exactly what happened; we didn't do anything," Xin Yi answered while driving calmly.
"Is that so..." Shu Rui felt a bit confused.
Following Shu Rui's directions, Xin Yi drove into a villa area, which was Shu Rui's home. They stopped in front of a villa, and Shu Rui said, "Do you want to come in for a bit? I... live alone."
Xin Yi was taken aback for a moment but quickly reacted, smiling as he replied, "Aren't you afraid, President Shu? You're all alone and so beautiful; I can't guarantee..."
"Stop! What are you thinking?! If you're not coming in, then forget it!" Shu Rui's face flushed; her words had been too ambiguous. She hurriedly changed the subject, saying, "Then you can drive my car back. It's too late to get a taxi now." After saying that, she opened the car door and jumped out.
Xin Yi also got out of the car and said to Shu Rui, "President Shu, be careful during this time. I'm not sure if those two people were targeting you."
"Huh? I haven't offended anyone!"
"I'm just uncertain. They might be after me instead. It's better for you to be cautious."
"Alright then, I'll head inside. Drive carefully," Shu Rui said hesitantly before walking in.
It wasn't until Xin Yi saw the lights turn on in the second-floor room of the villa that he turned the car around and left. Behind the curtains of the second-floor room, Shu Rui watched Xin Yi get into the car until it turned a corner and disappeared from view. She then withdrew her gaze and muttered to herself, "He's quite thoughtful."
