After hearing the sound of wheels downstairs, Li Nan cautiously poked his head out from the fifth-floor room, and upon inspection, he found that the other party had indeed left.
When Mo Xiaohui crawled out from under the bed, his face was difficult to conceal. "What were those people doing?"
Li Nan shook his head. "I don't know what their purpose is, but it’s clear that the Rogue-eyed Man has some deep intentions. Did you hear what he said in the hallway just now?"
Mo Xiaohui had been extremely nervous earlier and hadn’t paid any attention to the voices outside the door.
At this moment, Li Dapeng spoke up from the side. "They claimed to have escaped from prison. Could it be that Jiangbei City First Prison you mentioned before?"
Li Nan nodded affirmatively. "If they really are escaped convicts from prison, then we’re in big trouble!"
Mo Xiaohui recalled how they had clumsily jumped from the rooftop to the fifth floor earlier and shuddered. "I heard from a broadcast on that truck that Jiangbei Prison is supposedly a Safe Zone. How could anyone escape from there?"
Li Nan shook his head and then said towards the window below, "To uncover the truth, we need to ask that person down there!"
Mo Xiaohui knew who Li Nan was referring to and immediately asked, "But that person is dead, right?"
"Not necessarily!" Li Nan brandished a Rebar Javelin he always carried with him and headed downstairs, with Mo Xiaohui and Li Dapeng closely following.
In the northeast corner of the residential building, in a place piled with household garbage, there lay a hefty man on the ground, with a noticeable bloodstain on the back of his head. It seemed that the person known as Mighty Bull had put in quite a bit of force!
Li Nan wasn’t sure if the man who fell from the rooftop was dead or alive, but judging by where he fell, his chances of survival were quite high. The ground there was very soft, and he landed in a pile of garbage; unless he was extremely unlucky, he shouldn’t be dead!
Li Nan leaned closer and checked for signs of breath under the man's nose. Although his breathing was weak, there was still some air coming in and out!
After examining the man's injuries, Li Nan found that aside from a severe blow to the back of his head, he only had some abrasions elsewhere on his body. It seemed this guy really had a strong constitution!
The guy was hit in the back of the head, and his skull nearly turned into a bloody mess. Fortunately, the wound wasn't too large. Li Nan continued to examine him and found that aside from a mild concussion, he should be fine!
"Do we have any needles and thread?" Li Nan asked Mo Xiaohui, who was surprised and replied, "I think we do; I just scavenged some from someone’s house!"
Given the extremely rudimentary conditions, Li Nan didn't care about sterilization issues. He quickly took a sewing needle, threaded it with white string, and grabbed the guy's scalp to stitch it up roughly.
The blood on the scalp stained Li Nan's hand bright red, but he didn't mind. After a few passes, he managed to stitch up the scalp that had exposed the skull.
Mo Xiaohui was puzzled by Li Nan's intentions. "He might not be a good person. What if saving him gives him the chance to turn the tables on us?"
Li Nan focused intently on the stitching and simply replied, "I won't give him the chance to turn the tables. We need to extract some information from him; otherwise, we'll be completely in the dark about those people, which will put us at a disadvantage later!"
While Li Nan was stitching up the guy's scalp, Li Dapeng thoroughly searched him and pulled out a Type 92 pistol from his hand. He also found two magazines and two high-calorie energy bars in his pockets.
Li Nan instructed Li Dapeng to share the energy bars, then said, "It looks like we won't be leaving today; at least we need to wait another day to get some information out of this guy!"
As Mo Xiaohui chewed on an energy bar, he immediately felt less weak and agreed, "I'll follow your lead!"
Li Dapeng had no objections either. Once Li Nan finished repairing the guy's head, he carried him up to a room on the fifth floor.
The guy remained unconscious with his eyes closed, prompting Li Nan to wonder aloud, "Could he have become a vegetable?"
Li Dapeng laughed and said, "If he really has become a vegetable, that's easy enough; we can just chop off a few of his fingers with a kitchen knife. If there's still no reaction, then he really is a vegetable!"
Li Nan nodded. "Since this person hasn't woken up yet, your method isn't without its merits!"
Li Dapeng smiled widely and immediately walked to the kitchen, rummaging around and making a clattering noise before saying, "I couldn't find a kitchen knife. Would a hatchet work?"
Hearing Li Dapeng's words, Mo Xiaohui laughed and said, "You child, you're not being serious. Using a hatchet to chop off someone's fingers is overkill; you might as well just chop off the whole hand!"
Li Dapeng weighed a hatchet in his hand, grinning mischievously. "That's fine; anyway, that person has turned into a vegetable, so he probably won't feel anything. Why not just chop off all his limbs? Let's make it quick!"
Li Nan turned to look at Brother Hai, who was still lying unconscious on the floor, and chuckled, "Don't do that. How about we send him off nicely instead? This guy brought people to deal with us earlier; as a return gift, let's give him the punishment of being turned into a human pig!"
Mo Xiaohui shook his head. "What is the punishment of being turned into a human pig?"
Li Nan explained, "Back in the day, Empress Lü was unhappy with Liu Bang's favoritism towards Consort Qi. After Liu Bang died, Empress Lü inflicted extreme punishment on Consort Qi: she gouged out her eyes, cut off her ears, pulled out her tongue, and sliced off her nose. All seven orifices of her body were filled with molten copper and sealed. Then she chopped off her hands and feet, making her look like a pig; hence it was called 'human pig'!"
Mo Xiaohui suddenly understood. "I get it now! In ancient times, pigs were called 'zhi.' So the punishment of being turned into a human pig means being worse than a dog or pig!"
Li Nan nodded in agreement. "Unfortunately, we don't have any molten copper or proper tools; we probably can't carry out this ancient ritual completely!"
Li Dapeng was quite pleased with himself. "This hatchet in my hand is enough; what other tools do we need?"
Li Nan smiled. "Then we'll go with your plan!"
Li Dapeng cheerfully approached the man lying on the ground with the hatchet in hand and swung it vigorously!
Suddenly, Brother Hai, who had been lying on the floor, opened his eyes wide and immediately pleaded for mercy. "Hey there, young sir! Please spare me! I'm not pretending to be dead here!"
When Brother Hai opened his eyes and looked up, he saw an eleven or twelve-year-old child standing in front of him with an innocent face, holding a small wooden stick—where was the hatchet?
Brother Hai's expression changed in panic as he stammered, "Are you trying to trick me?"
At that moment, Li Nan leaned in closer and said with a smile, "If we weren't tricking you, you might never wake up for the rest of your life!"
Brother Hai wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and trembled as he asked, "Was it you who set the big fire at the Culvert?"
Li Dapeng tossed aside the small stick he was holding and pulled out two Binding Hooks from his sleeve, shouting, "There's no need for so much talk. Since you're awake, just confess!"
Li Nan remained silent, standing behind Li Dapeng with an imposing presence.
Brother Hai was intimidated by the eleven or twelve-year-old boy's authority and immediately fell silent. "Young master, I'm just a runner. Since you haven't killed me, feel free to ask whatever you want. I, Old Hai, will answer honestly!"
Li Dapeng scoffed, "What a coward! Now tell me your name."
Brother Hai whispered, "I am Zhang Hai, forty-two years old, from Jiangbei City. I have an eighty-year-old mother at home and a six-year-old child. Please have mercy on me..."
Li Dapeng tightened his face and angrily said, "Don't joke around with me. I didn't ask for that; stop with the nonsense!"
Brother Hai claimed his real name was Zhang Hai, but whether it was true or not was uncertain. However, the long story that followed was definitely false!
In fact, Brother Hai had regained consciousness when Li Nan carried him upstairs. However, at that time, his head was still quite foggy and he had no real ability to resist, so he pretended to be unconscious to seek an opportunity for himself!
Unfortunately for Brother Hai, things did not go as he had hoped. Throughout the journey, Li Nan never gave him a chance to act. By the time they reached the room, both his hands and feet were tightly bound. At this point, there was no chance of turning the tables or even sneaking away.
Since there was no opportunity left, Brother Hai decided to play dead and keep silent. However, when Li Nan and the others frightened him, he revealed his true self!
Brother Hai felt a deep resentment in his heart! It was bad enough to be schemed against by that rat bastard, but after surviving that ordeal, he ended up in the hands of these eunuchs. Could things possibly get any worse?
Seeing this eleven or twelve-year-old kid exuding such a strong presence, Brother Hai immediately backed down, saying, "You're right, if I keep talking nonsense, then I'm at your mercy!"
Brother Hai had reached a certain level of composure; as a man in his forties, he had no qualms about flattering a child.
Li Dapeng turned to Li Nan and, after receiving an affirmative nod, continued to ask, "What happened with those people you were with?"
Upon hearing this, Brother Hai, who was half-lying on the ground, instantly exploded with rage. "Those bastards are truly worthless! They teamed up to harm me, especially that rat! Next time I see him, if I don't smash his mouth and ruin his backside, I won't be surnamed Zhang!"
Li Dapeng wasn't interested in hearing his complaints and asked directly, "What exactly happened?"
Brother Hai's expression darkened as he pleaded with Li Nan behind Li Dapeng. "Big brother, please help me! Those people harmed me, and I can't let this go. You must stand up for me!"
In reality, Li Nan and Li Dapeng had already planned this scene together. With their back-and-forth banter, they managed to put Brother Hai in a position where he couldn't retaliate.
Li Nan pulled over a chair and sat behind Li Dapeng. Listening to Brother Hai's grievances, he simply said, "First clarify what happened before discussing anything else. Remember, you were the one who led people to drive us away before. If you don't show some sincerity now, don't blame me for being ruthless!"
