Liu Heping was immersed in joy. Although his experiment had failed, he had discovered a greater opportunity within it.
Liu Heping's gaze swept across the entire medicine storage room and then landed on the huge Iron Box in the corner, which contained a dozen Zombies, greedily staring in his direction.
Liu Heping chuckled to himself, "Relying on you is no better than relying on the living!"
Just as Liu Heping was lost in thought, the bed board behind him began to shake violently.
"What’s going on?" Liu Heping noticed the unusual sound and turned around, only to see Li Nan stepping down from the bed board.
Liu Heping was stunned. "Li Nan... are you okay?"
He examined the person before him. Li Nan still had some color in his face, and although his eyes were vacant, they were not hollow. The corners of his mouth were raised but not exaggerated. Thus, Liu Heping quickly concluded that Li Nan had not turned into a Zombie.
"Could it be that I accidentally succeeded in developing an antidote for the Zombie Virus?" Liu Heping felt a surge of joy inside.
Li Nan's eyes were fixed intently on Liu Heping, his expression difficult to read.
Feeling Li Nan's gaze upon him made Liu Heping uneasy, especially when he noticed that Li Nan had been bound by several ropes, which had now all snapped with a dull sound. This surprised Liu Heping.
"Comrade Li Nan, you should understand me. I'm just a small person who inadvertently discovered the antidote for the Zombie Virus, thanks in large part to your efforts, so..."
Li Nan remained silent, scanning the surroundings as if observing something.
A sense of unease crept over Liu Heping; he had a bad feeling about this. He immediately tightened his grip on the scalpel behind him.
"It was you who turned me into this, it was you who turned me into this..." Li Nan repeated these words, clearly not in a normal state of mind. Liu Heping noticed this and realized that based on Li Nan's earlier strength in breaking free from the restraints, he had no chance of confronting him.
"I'm doing this for your own good. Look, haven't I found the cure for the Zombie Virus? This is a great benefit for all humanity!" Liu Heping explained while searching for a favorable position to escape.
Li Nan sensed Liu Heping's odd behavior and immediately rushed over, sweeping his arms to knock down a pile of cardboard boxes.
With a loud crash, the boxes fell to the ground.
Liu Heping knew exactly what was in those boxes; they contained parts for a Medical Stretcher, which were quite heavy. He never expected that with just a light push from Li Nan, they would all topple over.
Liu Heping felt alarmed. "I never thought that after playing with eagles my whole life, I would be blinded by a sparrow!"
Understanding the principle of not taking immediate losses, Liu Heping knew what to do. So when he held a scalpel in front of Li Nan and saw that it didn't matter at all, he quickly slipped away.
Li Nan's arms were charged with energy, his eyes bloodshot, as if he had endless strength but couldn't unleash it. When he confirmed that the person in front of him was Liu Heping—the one who intended to turn him into a Zombie—an immense rage surged within him. He wanted to kill Liu Heping, to tear that person into pieces.
After being blocked by the pile of cardboard boxes, Li Nan's anger intensified. His arms swept out like iron rods, displaying tremendous violence.
Liu Heping spotted an opportunity and immediately dashed out. As he rushed past a large Iron Box in the corner of the medicine storage room, an idea struck him regarding events in the Second Morgue.
"Time for another trick!" Liu Heping frantically pulled out a key from his pocket and hurriedly unlocked the Iron Box while glancing back at Li Nan before sprinting away.
The Zombies inside the Iron Box surged out like sharks sensing blood, charging wildly forward.
On one side was Li Nan, and on the other was Liu Heping, who was fleeing in panic. Although these Zombies lacked intelligence, they still understood the principle of proximity. After a brief moment of hesitation, the dozen or so Zombies charged towards Li Nan.
Seeing this, Liu Heping felt a surge of anxiety. "What kind of monster has emerged? I hope those Zombies take each other out!"
Li Nan pushed aside a pile of cardboard boxes and immediately encountered a group of clawing Ghosts. Without hesitation, he swung his iron fists at them.
The first Zombie opened its mouth wide, attempting to bite down on Li Nan's incoming fist. However, fate had other plans; Li Nan's punch not only shattered the Zombie's yellowed teeth but also pierced through the back of its head, leaving it lifeless.
Li Nan shouted, "Monsters, all of you go to hell!"
In an instant, a dozen Zombies surrounded him, but Li Nan was undeterred. He unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks, as if he were possessed by a terminator combined with Bruce Lee.
In the blink of an eye, seven or eight Zombies had already fallen to the ground, blood splattering everywhere.
One Zombie lunged at Li Nan from behind and bit down hard, tearing off a piece of flesh from another Zombie.
"Ah..." Li Nan shouted as he staggered. He immediately grabbed the Zombie behind him and crushed it between his fists as if he were squashing a tomato into mush.
Once all the Zombies lay on the ground, Li Nan noticed another staggering Zombie with nothing left on its face except for a bloodied jawbone.
Li Nan halted abruptly; this last Zombie looked familiar. Sure enough, it was the elderly man he had saved at Beiyuan Square. Unexpectedly, he was the third corpse that Liu Heping had stolen.
Li Nan was taken aback, and his anger slightly subsided.
The staggering Zombie hurriedly approached Li Nan, greedily opening its mouth as if to feast.
Seeing this, Li Nan raised his right arm, ready to strike down, but suddenly paused near the Zombie's ear, seemingly reluctant.
With a crunching sound, the elderly Zombie bit down with its few remaining teeth, smacking its lips as if it struggled to chew.
Furious, Li Nan swung his arm and threw the Zombie against the wall. He then rushed over and punched, leaving a bloody crater in the wall.
Liu Heping, hiding behind the door of the storage room, watched this scene unfold clearly. "What the hell, how did I end up with a Green Giant?" Liu Heping realized that things were beyond his control and decided to abandon any dreams of dominance or wealth; surviving was enough. He immediately ran towards the Freight Elevator, fearing that if he hesitated even for a second, he would be turned into a meat pie by Li Nan.
Li Nan stared at the Zombie corpses in the storage room, seemingly lost in thought. After a moment, he covered his head with both hands, appearing to be in great pain.
Li Nan seemed to go mad, crashing around the storage room amidst various disgusting corpses and an array of white and black pills and liquids flying everywhere.
"Ah..." he let out a heart-wrenching scream as he collided with various medicine boxes, grabbing anything he could and shoving it into his mouth. It seemed he was searching for a sedative, but in his state, he couldn't distinguish between a sedative and nitroglycerin.
Half an hour later, Li Nan had consumed box after box of medication. His stomach swelled into a small mountain until he could no longer move and finally collapsed to the ground.
