After experiencing a life-and-death crisis, Li Nan felt deeply moved. If there was a chance to get out this time, he would definitely cherish the people around him. The fleeting moments between life and death could truly make a person mature a lot, and Li Nan had learned a valuable lesson.
The space in the ventilation duct was narrow, making it difficult for everyone to move. Moreover, their encounters underground had been perilous, and they were physically exhausted. Unfortunately, they had not brought any food to replenish their energy, so many of them were feeling quite hungry.
Li Nan was the first to have his stomach growl, followed by Liu Ziming. At this moment, Zhang Li, who was crawling at the front, laughed and said, "Just hold on a little longer; once we get out of this ventilation duct, we'll be free!"
Li Nan was both hungry and tired, having already cast aside all other thoughts; he just hoped nothing else would go wrong.
Han Guang turned back and asked Li Nan, "Why does your stomach keep making noise?"
Li Nan awkwardly replied, "It's empty; it can't help but make noise!"
Suddenly, Han Guang felt something was off. "Why is the sound getting louder?"
Li Nan was taken aback. "To be honest, my stomach did rumble a few times earlier, but it shouldn't be causing vibrations all around us!"
Li Nan also sensed something strange. He noticed that the metal duct beneath him seemed to be vibrating slightly, and the frequency was increasing!
Han Guang was puzzled. "That sound isn't from your stomach; it sounds like some kind of mechanical resonance!"
Li Nan furrowed his brows in panic and asked Han Guang, "What time is it now?"
"One fifty-nine AM!"
"Oh no! I just remembered; it's the ventilation fan in the Control Room! That thing operates every hour on the hour. How could I have forgotten about that?" Li Nan's mind suddenly cleared up as he realized where the earlier problem had originated.
Li Nan shouted at the end, "Hurry up and crawl! There's danger in this pipe, we need to get out quickly!"
Earlier, when crawling towards the Control Room, Li Nan had mentioned the Ventilation Fan, but it was just a false alarm at that time since the entire underground area was powered down, and the Ventilation Fan couldn't possibly be operational. However, the situation was different now; as soon as it hit two o'clock in the morning, Zhang Li and his group would be sucked into the rotating turbine and turned into filling for dumplings.
Li Nan crawled forward with all his might, but due to the limited space, he couldn't use his strength effectively, and he was already exhausted!
The layout of the ventilation duct had no pattern at all; it was entirely arranged according to the position of the Morgue below, making it winding and difficult to navigate.
Li Nan felt extremely strained. Would they have enough time to crawl out in just one minute?
The news had already reached the front; Zhang Li also sensed the urgency of the situation and immediately crawled as fast as he could, determined to get out before two o'clock.
However, there was still quite a distance to cover in the ventilation duct ahead.
Li Nan found himself in an awkward position. Why was it always him at the most dangerous back? It wasn't fair! Li Nan thought to himself, "Next time I must be at the front of the line!"
The wind began to pick up!
Li Nan could clearly feel airflow developing in the ventilation duct. Although it was just a slight movement, it made Li Nan break out in a sweat!
Up ahead, Han Guang was also using both hands and feet to crawl, but he still couldn't see any ventilation openings to descend.
Han Guang didn't have time to check his watch, but in just one minute, he felt like more than half of it had already passed!
Li Nan felt increasingly uneasy; perhaps in the next second, he would be the first to become filling for dumplings.
The speed of the airflow was growing faster and faster, and Li Nan could already feel his head being pushed back.
Li Nan did not know much about the underground ventilation system, but he had observed one thing beforehand. In the Control Room, Li Nan had taken a look at the massive Ventilation Fan. Based on the machine's power, it could generate a maximum wind speed of 25 meters per second. If the wind speed increased a bit more to 30 meters per second, it could basically be defined as a hurricane. Therefore, in the ventilation duct, not to mention eleven people, even eleven elephants would not withstand such wind speed!
Li Nan was taken aback; the Exhaust Fan should have been activated by now, and the enormous rotating turbine was likely in operation, perhaps buying them some time.
Before Li Nan could move two meters, the wind behind him suddenly intensified. He could already feel the wind rushing into his clothes, crashing against him from all sides, and the pressure was multiplying!
At this rate, in another twenty seconds or so, the wind speed would be enough to pull a living person backward. At that point, there would truly be no chance of escape.
Continuing to crawl was definitely futile. Li Nan gritted his teeth and said to Han Guang in front of him, "Stop crawling; we have no hope left. You need to call out to the Wolf Fang Soldier ahead and get me a Submachine Gun with the most bullets. I have an important use for it!"
Han Guang also knew that they were unlikely to get out, but he did not stop. When he heard Li Nan's voice, he hesitated for a moment but quickly thought that Li Nan was just resigning himself to death again!
Han Guang turned around and saw Li Nan retreating backward. He shouted, "What are you trying to do? Are you afraid of dying too slowly?"
Li Nan kept his head down and crawled backward with all his might. Seeing Han Guang turn to speak, he immediately replied, "There's no time! Quickly give me a Submachine Gun!"
Mentioning the Submachine Gun made Han Guang shiver with realization. "You want to..."
Before Li Nan could respond, he hurriedly continued to retreat. Han Guang understood and immediately called out to Liu Ziming ahead, "Give me your Submachine Gun!"
Liu Ziming was stunned, but he quickly pulled the Submachine Gun hanging around his neck and said, "There are only seven bullets!"
"That's enough!" Han Guang took the Submachine Gun, swung it with both hands, and it landed in front of Li Nan. Upon seeing the gun, Li Nan immediately hugged it to his chest and continued to back away.
When Han Guang tossed the Submachine Gun to Li Nan, he already felt a noticeable resistance in the air, and the muscles on his face were twitching uncontrollably.
"I hope there's enough time!" Han Guang thought to himself as he watched Li Nan leave.
The wind grew stronger, and Liu Ziming and the others were being pulled back by the strong gusts, making it difficult to move forward. Reluctantly, Liu Ziming drew out the Triangular Bayonet, mustered all his strength, and plunged it into the iron sheet of the pipe. Beneath the iron sheet was solid concrete, extremely hard, yet Liu Ziming managed to stab it in about three or four centimeters.
Holding onto the Bayonet embedded in the concrete allowed Liu Ziming to stabilize himself. Behind him, Han Guang couldn't care less about appearances and immediately grabbed Liu Ziming's calf to avoid being swept away by the wind.
In contrast to Liu Ziming and the others' struggles, Li Nan was moving smoothly since he no longer had to retreat on his own; the wind was pulling him backward at a decent speed. Although Li Nan was moving backward, he dared not let the wind dictate his path. He had to brace himself against the iron sheet above while using his hands and feet below to increase lateral resistance and friction. However, he still couldn't withstand the strong wind and could only slow down his being pulled away.
At this wind speed, which was estimated to be less than 25 meters per second, if that Ventilation Fan really kicked into high gear soon, it would be impossible for Li Nan to resist just by bracing himself.
With the wind assisting him, Li Nan was being pulled back quickly. Still, he remained cautious; his braced backside was almost smoking from friction. However, he had no time to worry about that because he was about to reach the ventilation hole of the Control Room. The Ventilation Fan stood directly in front of that hole, with its massive rotating turbine facing Li Nan. Dozens of blades over a meter long were spinning chaotically. Once he exited through the ventilation hole, he would surely be sucked in; at that point, being torn apart would be mild—he might not even find a single bone!
Seeing that the timing was right, Li Nan immediately threw away his Submachine Gun from his chest and fired three shots at the spinning turbine. In Li Nan's mind, escaping was already impossible at this point; their only chance for survival was to destroy that Electric Machine. Although it was relatively large, a few shots might be enough to damage it—then wouldn't they resolve their dire situation?
Li Nan had good intentions, but after firing three shots at the spinning turbine, there was surprisingly no reaction from it.
"Damn!" Seeing this situation, Li Nan cursed inwardly; he hadn't expected this machine to be so sturdy. Didn't the hospital's procurement department know they should support domestic products?
As soon as he thought about it, the wind speed took effect, and Li Nan could no longer control his body. The Submachine Gun hanging on his chest floated up like a plastic bag.
"Damn it!" Li Nan cursed inwardly. At that moment, the M1911 hidden in his chest pocket also floated out and landed directly on the rotating blades of the Ventilation Fan. With a series of crunching sounds, the M1911 was reduced to dust!
Without thinking, if Li Nan got sucked in, he would be worse off than that gun. So, he braced himself against the entire ventilation duct, using all his strength to fight back!
Could human strength compete with a wind speed of 25 meters per second? Obviously not. Li Nan knew he was going against the odds, but he didn't want to give up because giving up would only lead to being crushed to pieces!
In that moment, Li Nan felt like he had taken a stimulant; his previously weak body suddenly found immense strength from somewhere. One of his hands formed a fist and he struck hard at the top of the ventilation duct, instantly creating a large dent. With one hand and one foot, it seemed as if he was trying to push open the duct. His half-leaning body felt supported and surprisingly stable, not swaying with the wind.
In a life-or-death moment, potential erupted. Li Nan sensed the change within himself; at least that's how he explained it to himself. Once his body stabilized, Li Nan raised his right hand, wanting to fire several shots. After all, if there was a chance to escape, he wouldn't hesitate to try. This life-and-death struggle concerned not just him but also Han Guang, Zhang Li, Liu Ziming, and others behind him. Back in the Control Room, it was Zhang Li and Han Guang who risked their lives to save him. This time it was his turn; Li Nan wanted to be a hero instead of always needing rescue.
In an instant, Li Nan felt bold and determined. He grabbed the Submachine Gun and fired a bullet. However, as he lifted his right hand to shoot, his body suddenly lost stability and was pulled out by the wind!
"Oh no! How could this happen?" Seeing himself flying away, Li Nan realized it would be increasingly difficult to regain control. In front of him was a rapidly spinning turbine; without thinking, he knew that in the next moment he would become filling for dumplings.
"Damn it! I just wanted a chance to be a hero!" Li Nan cursed as he flew away.
