Li Nan's words left Han Guang stunned. "Why didn't you mention this before?"
Li Nan sighed, "Do you believe me if I say I didn't think of it earlier?"
Han Guang didn't engage in banter with Li Nan and immediately relayed the information forward. He then turned back to Li Nan and said, "There are Zombies below the Control Room. If we jump down recklessly, we'll definitely be attacked!"
Li Nan replied, "Either we get bitten by Zombies or get shredded by the Electric Machine. We have to choose a way to die! At least we have some control over it; that's not too bad!"
Han Guang incredulously said, "How can you be so calm after experiencing life and death?"
Li Nan responded, "If I don't have a bit of detachment, wouldn't it all be for nothing after walking through the gates of hell?" He then smiled mischievously, "You haven't seen the situation below the Control Room; how do you know it's all Zombies down there?"
"That's simple. You can guess from how Zhang Li and the others are hesitating in front. Otherwise, what are they hesitating about?"
Li Nan looked at Han Guang's back while Han Guang listened to Li Nan's words. The two of them, one in front and one behind, appeared quite comical!
They couldn't advance or retreat; now more than ten people were stuck in this ventilation duct. In about five minutes, they would likely be sucked into the Ventilation Fan and turned into minced meat. Those Zombies would be surprised to find a meaty smell floating in the air!
After pondering for a moment, Li Nan composed himself. To be honest, moments like these that were life-and-death made him feel rather indifferent because experiencing the approach of death was truly exhilarating.
Falling in a dream and being ambushed at Door No. 2 had made Li Nan much calmer about life and death, so his emotions were relatively stable.
At that moment, a flicker of light appeared ahead in the ventilation duct. Liu Ziming, in front of Han Guang, shouted, "Wasn't the entire underground system powered down? Can that Ventilation Fan still be working?"
Upon hearing this, Li Nan felt his ears turn red. "Yeah, it's all powered down; why fear an Electric Machine!"
Han Guang laughed heartily, "Those two brushes with death have certainly dulled your wits!"
Li Nan wanted to argue a point, but realized it was pointless. Even if the Electric Machine could be ignored, the Zombies dancing wildly in the Control Room could not be overlooked. The problem they faced remained dire.
Han Guang stopped laughing and asked Li Nan, "After climbing all this way, you must have seen that in the entire left area of Mortuary One, there is only one Zombie left behind door number two. The rest have definitely made their way into this Control Room. We are facing too many enemies to confront them head-on!"
Li Nan replied, "There are eighty corpses behind door number three; door number one has slightly fewer, with only forty-two corpses; door number two is at full capacity with two hundred corpses. So, all things considered, excluding the Zombie that attacked me, there should be three hundred forty-one Zombies in this Control Room. Of course, this does not account for doors four and five; it's just a conservative estimate!"
Liu Ziming, who was in front of Han Guang, caught on to a word and asked, "Why do you always say there are eighty corpses behind door number three? According to the storage records, shouldn't it be eighty-one?"
Han Guang asked the same question shortly after.
Li Nan felt there was no need to hide this issue any longer. Since they were already in a life-or-death situation, he wasn't afraid of affecting everyone's mood. He then addressed Han Guang directly, saying, "Do you remember what was different about the Corpse Storage Cabinets 168, 169, and 170 behind door three?"
Han Guang recalled the details slowly and said, "The first two Corpse Storage Cabinets each had two transparent plastic bags inside, but cabinet 170 had nothing at all!"
Hearing Han Guang say this, Liu Ziming also remembered. "Most of the Corpse Storage Cabinets we checked had those plastic bags; we don't know what they're for."
"You haven't worked in the medical system, so you wouldn't be familiar with matters in the Morgue. When a corpse is transported from outside to this Underground Morgue, it must go through several checks to confirm that it is indeed deceased. Then, based on specific circumstances, it is decided which area it will be sent to. During this process, the Morgue staff will place the corpse into a transparent plastic bag to protect it."
Han Guang clicked his tongue and said, "So you're saying that without that plastic bag, there is no corpse!"
Li Nan affirmed this. "Cabinet 170 is empty; that means one corpse was never placed into a Corpse Storage Cabinet at all!"
"But at night, three corpses were clearly delivered here, and the storage records do state that those three corpses were arranged in cabinets 168, 169, and 170 behind door three. How could such a situation arise?" Liu Ziming felt perplexed but then suddenly realized and continued speaking: "Could it be that the corpse had already turned into a Zombie before being placed in cabinet 170?"
Li Nan immediately denied this. "Impossible! In terms of timing, although I don't know how long it takes for a normal human to turn into a Zombie, it certainly won't be very short. Abnormal beings require time; that's an undeniable fact. Moreover, if that Zombie had already transformed before being placed into the Corpse Storage Cabinet, the hospital would have surely noticed. However, based on the information we currently have, such an event absolutely did not occur!"
The current situation is absolutely not optimistic. Instead of investigating the whereabouts of a corpse, it would be better to study how to escape the current predicament. Although Han Guang also sensed the strangeness of that corpse, he said, "One less Zombie or one more Zombie doesn't significantly affect us right now. Since we are already here, how to get down to the Control Room is the key!"
Li Nan shook his head and said, "Even if we get to the Control Room, we may not be able to get out!"
It was already approaching one in the morning. They had come down at eleven-thirty at night, and after an hour and a half of perilous experiences, Zhang Li had mentioned that the Epidemic Prevention Unit should have arrived at Jiangbei Hospital by now. Therefore, there should be strict inspections taking place in Jiangbei Hospital. Unless something unexpected happened, the military would abandon this underground Morgue and leave Zhang Li and the others behind. So now, the situation was no longer about whether they could escape or not; it was about them soon becoming pawns.
At this stage, the military must have realized the severity of the Zombie threat. Therefore, completely eliminating the hidden dangers in Jiangbei Hospital's Underground Morgue was an unavoidable task. Soldiers sacrifice for their country; they should have this spirit of dedicating themselves in times of national crisis. When Li Nan thought about this, he felt bitter, "I shouldn't have waded into this murky water. If you choose to venture into hell, who can you blame?"
Han Guang noticed Li Nan's bitter expression and asked, "Whether we can get out is one thing; whether we want to get out is another. If there's no chance of survival, what else can you do?"
"Do you have a way to avoid the attacks of at least three hundred forty-one Zombies in the Control Room?" Li Nan asked.
Han Guang smiled slyly, "Do you know how those Zombies perceive the world?"
Li Nan shrugged it off, "Hearing, sight, smell, touch—animals perceive the world through these four senses. What's the problem with that?"
Han Guang asked again, "Then what do you think Zombies use?"
Li Nan thought for a moment before answering, "Touch is impossible; as for sight, that Zombie in Room 2 could attack us even without light, so sight can also be ruled out. Then there's hearing and smell—I can't determine which one it is, but clearly smell is more likely!"
Han Guang agreed, "Good thinking! If we can get out this time, you might consider joining the public security system; I believe you would achieve something!"
"Come on! Even if I achieve something, I can't compete with Conan. Why should I fight with Officer Megure for a job? I'd rather wait patiently for my promotion! Wait a minute—you're not planning something, are you?"
Han Guang shouted to Liu Ziming ahead: "Tell Captain Zhang Li that we are retreating back to Area 2!"
Liu Ziming was puzzled, but Li Nan had discovered something. "Are you trying to cover it up with a smell? But how can that be done?"
Han Guang said playfully, "Have you ever eaten a dish called 'Three-Layer Duck'? It consists of a duck wrapped around a chicken, and the chicken wrapped around a pigeon. It's a triple delight, but from the outside, you would never notice the chicken and the pigeon. Now we will use this method to confuse the Zombie!"
Li Nan thought for a moment and exclaimed, "Isn't that a bit too heavy on the palate?"
Liu Ziming listened in shock, completely unable to grasp the situation, but he still relayed the message about retreating to Door No. 2.
*****************
The ventilation duct was too narrow; Zhang Li and the others could only back up with their butts in the air. Originally at the back, Li Nan suddenly found himself at the front of the line, though his position was still aimed at Han Guang's backside.
Li Nan smiled wryly and said, "Thank goodness I have good character; otherwise, I might not be able to hold myself back!" Lost in thought, he inadvertently pulled at the wound on his right arm, letting out a couple of involuntary yelps.
However, they did not stop retreating. After about five or six minutes, Li Nan gritted his teeth and plopped down onto the ground.
Next, Han Guang performed a backward somersault and landed smoothly, followed by Liu Ziming, Li Xiaofan, and others—all landing steadily except for Li Nan.
Li Nan silently cursed, "Damn it, that hurt!"
