The violent incident that occurred at Beiyuan Square caught the attention of local television stations that evening, leading to a live news program following the developments.
At eight o'clock, the Neighborhood News program aired as scheduled.
"Hello everyone, I am your host Mo Xiaohui. Welcome to this episode. As we all know, Jiangbei City has always been regarded as a safe city, but tonight a heinous crime has taken place within the city, which is extremely concerning."
As the footage rolled, the television screen switched to a live video where a reporter was interviewing several citizens outside the yellow caution tape.
"The whole attack was truly horrifying. A thirty-four-year-old strong man, with bloodshot eyes, was rampaging around, grabbing people and viciously biting them as if he were eating them..." A young man stood in front of the camera, vividly recalling what had happened two hours earlier.
Seeing that the interviewee was emotionally overwhelmed and seemed unable to continue, the reporter turned the microphone back to himself and said, "Around six o'clock tonight at Beiyuan Square, a face-eating incident occurred. A seemingly deranged man was rampaging and harmed three individuals, all of whom suffered severe facial injuries. This has caused great panic among the public. After deploying most of Jiangbei City's police force and considering that the suspect refused to surrender and posed a significant danger, the police have shot him dead. The specifics of the case are still under investigation!"
The director then cut back to Mo Xiaohui in the studio, who said with a serious expression, "In June 2012, a face-eating incident occurred in Miami, shocking the world. It bears similarities to what has happened here in Jiangbei City. Is it a result of a criminal's twisted psyche or is there some hidden secret behind it? This program will continue to follow this case. Thank you for watching!"
As Mo Xiaohui left the studio, she let out a light sigh, appearing fatigued. Her assistant said, "You've been working too hard lately; you should take a break!"
"I can take a break, but the program cannot stop. There's no way; I can't relax on the job!" Mo Xiaohui took a deep breath and regained her usual composure.
Her assistant chuckled and replied, "Mo Xiaohui has always been this dedicated; everyone in the station knows that. But work is for the public good while your health is your own—take care of yourself!" After saying this, she turned into another studio to organize materials.
Once Mo Xiaohui saw her assistant leave, she reviewed the news script in her hand again. News programs certainly cannot allow hosts to speak freely without guidance; thus, whether it's national broadcasts or local news segments, hosts always have a stack of scripts to follow.
The news script in Mo Xiaohui's hands detailed the events of the face-eating incident at Beiyuan Square. Many details made this star reporter from Jiangbei City feel anxious; however, adhering to her rigorous journalistic standards, she chose not to disclose certain specifics but secretly believed in their authenticity.
Mo Xiaohui took out her phone and dialed a number, asking, "Wang Bo, you were at the scene earlier; what was the name of the person who fought with the criminal?"
Hearing Mo Xiaohui's voice made Wang Bo feel delighted but knowing it was a work-related matter restrained his excitement as he replied, "Some citizens around recognized him; his name is Li Nan. He has been injured and taken to Jiangbei City First Hospital."
"Oh~" Immediately after that came a series of beeping sounds as Wang Bo felt lost.
Jiangbei City First Hospital saw several ambulances arriving, and immediately a group of medical staff rushed over. The Beiyuan Square Incident that occurred in the evening had already stirred up quite a commotion, and as the nearest medical facility, Jiangbei City First Hospital naturally had a responsibility to respond. Therefore, the hospital urgently recalled several attending physicians who had already finished their shifts, as if preparing for battle.
A nurse was carrying a stretcher and hurriedly brought it into the Emergency Department. Upon seeing someone, she called out, "Is Dr. Liu from Neurology here? This is our department's Li Nan, he has a head injury and we need to hurry..."
Li Nan had hit his head on the ground and had a confrontation with the Red-Eyed Man, exhausting both his physical and mental strength. As the police approached, he lost consciousness. However, it was not a major issue; at least his life was not in danger.
After being jostled for more than ten minutes, Li Nan gradually opened his eyes, feeling the light was blinding. After slightly turning his head, he saw two nurses beside him. Li Nan thought to himself, "Just now it was a biohazard crisis, how did it turn into cosplay now? Or is it just the allure of uniforms?"
Nurse Gao Xue noticed that Li Nan had regained consciousness and suddenly stopped speaking.
Once Li Nan adjusted to the light and opened his eyes wide, he recognized one of the nurses and realized that he was in Jiangbei City First Hospital, where he was doing his internship.
Gao Xue exclaimed with joy, "You're awake!"
Li Nan realized he was lying on a stretcher and intended to get up but was stopped by Gao Xue: "You’re injured; don’t move around. Dr. Liu from Neurology will check you soon to make sure everything is fine!"
Li Nan smiled awkwardly: "I really don't have any issues; it's just my head... feels a bit dizzy." Just as he tried to sit up, he felt another wave of dizziness.
Despite Gao Xue's insistence, Li Nan obediently remained on the stretcher as he was taken to see Dr. Liu from Neurology.
"There are no signs of hallucinations or consciousness issues, just a brief loss of consciousness. He is not sensitive to light or sound. From my observation, there is no severe external injury to the brain tissue. Currently, the symptoms indicate only a mild concussion; however, you should still get a CT scan of your brain!" Dr. Liu said methodically.
As a medical student himself, although not well-versed in Neurology, Li Nan had some foundational knowledge. He believed that he was perfectly fine; as for the so-called mild concussion, eating more walnuts would help him recover.
Li Nan did not go for the CT scan at all; he only asked Gao Xue to treat his hand abrasions before heading back to his department for the night shift.
"Did Old Wang get angry because I didn't come?"
Gao Xue laughed at Li Nan's question. The disinfectant swab in her hand accidentally brushed against the cut on Li Nan's skin, causing him to wince in pain.
"With Old Wang's temper, she can ignite herself just from the dry weather. Do you think she got angry?"
Old Wang is the head of the Pharmacy Department, a woman in her fifties who has been divorced for many years and is currently going through menopause—definitely a fierce mother tiger who bites anyone she sees.
To be honest, the Pharmacy Department is just where they handle medications in the hospital, dealing with drug records, distribution, and procurement. The workload isn't heavy, but it can be time-consuming. Both Li Nan and Gao Xue belong to the Pharmacy Department.
Li Nan is an intern and has to rotate through various departments in the hospital, including Proctology, Urology, and even Obstetrics and Gynecology, where he spent a couple of months. Recently, he was transferred to the Pharmacy Department. To be frank, staying in the Pharmacy Department is relatively relaxed, but Old Wang is truly unbearable, which is why he dares not be late for night shifts.
Since the Pharmacy Department is relatively quiet, Nurse Gao Xue was temporarily assigned to an ambulance duty.
Although Gao Xue had encouraged him beforehand, Li Nan was still anxious about facing Old Wang. He said to Gao Xue, "How about you get me a hospital bed so I can hide out tonight?"
Gao Xue had just graduated from nursing school six months ago and was around the same age as Li Nan, so they got along well. She was also willing to get closer to him.
"You have injuries; there's a reason for it. How could Old Wang scold you? Besides, lying in the hospital for a night isn't bad; you can get checked again!" After saying that, Gao Xue couldn't help but laugh: "Look at how I bandaged you!"
Li Nan looked down and couldn't help but smile wryly; his hands were wrapped up like two butterflies by Gao Xue.
"You got hurt over at Beiyuan Square. What exactly happened there?" After finishing the bandaging, Gao Xue's curiosity kicked in.
Li Nan recalled what had happened near the square and shuddered slightly, falling silent.
Seeing this reaction, Gao Xue continued, "Could it be that those rumors about a biohazard crisis are true?"
"Biohazard? Is that thing a Zombie? Impossible! That's just a fictional creation from movies and games. How could there be Zombies in reality?" Li Nan couldn't help but question himself. He wanted to understand what had happened tonight, but if that thing wasn't a Zombie, then what could move freely without any signs of life?
Li Nan's mind was in chaos; there were some things he simply couldn't comprehend. After struggling for a long time, he leaned towards the idea that it was a disease, an unprecedented illness.
Li Nan's murmurs only confirmed Gao Xue's fears about the rumors outside, causing her to tense up involuntarily.
When Li Nan pulled himself out of his thoughts and noticed Gao Xue's unusual reaction, he laughed and said, "The world didn't end in 2012, so how could there be Zombies in 2014? Do you think you're reading a science fiction novel?"
Gao Xue chuckled at Li Nan's words. "We're studying medicine; even if Zombies surrounded us, we wouldn't be afraid with our scalpels!"
In the operating room, Li Nan had handed over scalpels to others, so it wasn't an exaggeration to say he was skilled with one.
Li Nan found it amusing, his gaze wandering until it unintentionally landed on Gao Xue's face—fair and bright, with lively big eyes. He was captivated and found himself unable to look away.
Gao Xue also noticed Li Nan's gaze, and a blush crept onto her cheeks. She then felt Li Nan's hands reaching for hers.
In the corridor outside the emergency room of Jiangbei Hospital, no one noticed the interaction between the patient and the nurse. However, Gao Xue felt strange; there was a force within her urging her to avoid Li Nan's gaze, yet another voice in her heart told her not to shy away from his hands. Ah, women are truly peculiar creatures!
Just as Li Nan was about to take hold of her hands, several police officers suddenly appeared outside the emergency room. One of them asked, "Which one is Li Nan who was just brought in?"
"Ah! Why do the police always ruin good moments?" Li Nan retracted his outstretched hands reluctantly and pulled back his longing gaze before answering, "I am Li Nan."
