"You've had enough!"
Li Ye scolded sharply. Although he understood what was happening, he could not bear to witness the intimate scene before him. He could not connect her actions to saving someone and even forgot her original identity.
In his eyes, she was simply being affectionate with someone, deliberately showing it to him.
Mo Xier stopped her movements, tears streaming down her cheeks as if she hadn't heard his voice. She reached out to grasp Night Star's clothing, slowly peeling it away, and was hit by a sour, rotten smell that made her pupils dilate in disbelief.
A strange feeling surged within her, an inexplicable oddity.
A flicker of doubt crossed her mind as she reached out to check his breath. It was faint and barely perceptible, but her sensitivity to life allowed her to detect something unusual.
The slight response she had felt earlier and the faint warmth in her hands were telling.
If an ordinary person suffered such severe injuries, they would have succumbed long ago due to the rotting wounds. She didn't know how long it would take to travel from the grasslands to the capital, but she was aware that a mortal could not last more than three days. Yet why, why did Night Star still have breath?
It was as if he had intentionally held on for her to come and heal him.
Mo Xier took out a pill from her bosom; it was the Purifying Heart and Mind Detox Pill. After bringing the medicine box from Xinrong, she found a small clean vial inside, pulled out the cork, and placed the pill into his mouth, gently feeding him water.
This was water she had specially collected from a rootless source, the purest substance in the world, gathered on a rainy morning at dawn.
It had to be collected during the brief window between the moon setting and the sun rising. Such water was extremely rare and difficult to obtain. This small vial had taken her a month to gather and was exceptionally precious.
This water was most effective at detoxifying the body. Paired with the specially formulated Clear Heart Calming Pill, it could alleviate worries for normal people and naturally dissolve toxins for those who were poisoned.
She noticed that Night Star's chest appeared somewhat blackened and wondered whether it was due to poisoning or dried blood.
She decided to first dissolve the toxins in his body and then clean the wounds little by little. She took scissors from the medicine box and began to cut away his clothing, revealing the gruesome, twisted wounds that were still oozing blood.
"Stop! I will not allow you to save him!"
Li Ye could no longer hold back. Seeing her actions so intimate, even though Night Star was filthy and in a pitiful state, she still showed such concern for him, not minding at all that he was dirty and had sullied the beautiful Yellow Dress gifted to her by the Empress Dowager.
That dress had been custom-made by people he personally selected for her. Now, she was treating it so carelessly, showing a complete lack of appreciation for his feelings.
Her delicate hand paused as she put down the scissors, raised her head, and shot a cold, piercing gaze at the Emperor, asking, "Why?"
The Emperor shivered under her gaze, feeling a chill run down his spine, and instinctively took three steps back.
Before he could speak, Li Qingfeng stepped forward, noticing the Emperor's troubled expression. "Night Star has formed factions and betrayed military secrets. He has not returned to camp for three days and nights, violating military regulations. According to the law, he should be punished with death."
"Punish my entire clan? Hmph?" Mo Xier sneered coldly, her eyes fixed on the Emperor with disdain. "Is that how it is?"
The Emperor nodded. In her eyes, his Bright Yellow attire was now utterly detestable, making her feel sick just looking at it. Staring at the glaring Bright Yellow, she coldly remarked, "To punish my clan naturally means you must kill me as well."
"That's not true!" Li Ye retorted sharply. He struggled to explain, "I do not wish to kill you; I want you to live!"
"If you don't want to kill me, do you intend to kill him instead?" Mo Xier interjected coldly, casting a glance at the man lying nearby, barely alive.
Tears fell silently. "Your Majesty truly has a cruel heart! You would disregard years of brotherhood and unjustly kill a subject."
After saying this, she laughed self-deprecatingly. "Hahaha! You are the ruler; he is but a subject! How could I forget? You are the exalted monarch! A subject is ultimately just a subject; where is there any brotherly affection? Hmph! No matter how meticulously you plan, he is merely a pawn in your hands that you can discard at will."
She looked coldly at the lofty emperor standing in the distance. Suddenly enraged by her words, he shouted furiously, "How dare you question me?" As soon as he spoke, he was taken aback himself, staring blankly at the face confronting him from afar, its expression icy.
When she told him to get lost, he was not angry. When she threw a tantrum at him, he was not angry. Even when she coldly questioned him and turned away with her sleeves raised, he did not get angry.
But now, as she questioned him because of another man, he suddenly felt an anger he could no longer suppress.
An unprecedented rage surged within him. Did she not see everything he had done for her? He was an emperor! He needed dignity!
"So what if you are the emperor? Are you going to kill me too?" Mo Xier sneered and continued, "Fine, I've grown tired of living anyway. Killing me would be good; let me go see him."
Her voice softened towards the end, her gaze gently falling on the man lying on the ground, filled with a tender yet sorrowful emotion.
Li Ye froze coldly, a thick bitterness spreading in his throat.
"Cousin?!" At that moment, Liu Xuxin hurried over, supporting Old Madam.
She walked anxiously, almost breaking into a run, but Old Madam beside her seemed unhurried for some reason, showing no signs of urgency. Wasn't this her own flesh and blood? That damned old thing!
Liu Xuxin cursed inwardly, but the urgency of the situation left no room for such thoughts. She quickly approached, supporting Old Madam and patiently moving forward step by step.
Finally, when she saw the familiar man she had longed for lying in the carriage, her heart shattered in an instant. A pain like being cut by a knife swept over her, making it hard for her to breathe.
Leaving Old Madam behind, she wanted to rush forward immediately but was forcibly held back by a resistance beside her. Turning around, she saw it was her maid. The maid gestured to her and whispered, "Miss, you are still an unmarried young lady from a prominent family. Given the general's current state, it might be best to observe the situation first! This is also for your future."
The maid spoke calmly without changing her expression or showing any fear, startling Liu Xuxin so much that her hair stood on end. This maid had grown up beside her mother and had been trained impeccably in both skills and cunning.
This time she came to the Night Family not only to see her cousin but also to choose a good husband for her future rise to wealth and glory.
What she said was not wrong; she still needed to plan for the future. She was beautiful and delicate; losing her cousin was not a big deal. However, as an unmarried young lady from a noble family, if she lost her reputation, it would mean losing everything.
Thinking this, she looked at the woman in a pale yellow dress kneeling beside Night Star in the distance.
She scoffed inwardly; although the woman was beautiful and well-dressed, what did it matter that at such a young age she had attached herself to the Empress Dowager and became the Royal Adopted Daughter?
Now that her cousin was gone and she had lost her reputation, who would dare to touch her in the future? All that awaited her was a lonely old age, subjected to scorn.
With these thoughts, she stopped in her tracks, carefully wiping away the tears in her eyes. Her eyes were slightly red, but she showed no signs of sorrow, standing silently as she gazed into the distance, as if everything around her had nothing to do with her.
Old Madam's gaze was extremely cold as she stared at the man lying on the ground in the distance.
There was not a trace of sadness in her expression; she walked forward with focused determination, completely oblivious to Liu Xuxin's reaction. She quickened her pace, and the young woman beside her showed no intention of following. With no time to spare, she ordered a nearby maid to check, "Go see if that wretch is dead."
The maid nodded and walked away.
Upon hearing this, Liu Xuxin and the maid were both startled, unsure why Old Madam would say such cruel words upon seeing her own son.
Why wasn't she sad? Did Old Madam truly harbor such deep resentment towards Night Star for causing her husband’s death while trying to save their son?
Unable to comprehend this, just then, a sudden change occurred.
The maid returned and said, "Old Madam, it seems the young master has no breath left." She spoke with concern, hesitating as if afraid Old Madam might faint from this news.
Old Madam nodded, showing no signs of emotional disturbance; on the contrary, there was a flicker of joy in her heart.
Why? Liu Xuxin was greatly puzzled. Just as she began to ponder this further, a significant event unfolded before her eyes. The woman in pale yellow on the carriage raised her head and locked eyes with the young emperor, both staring defiantly at each other.
The emperor felt a surge of anger rising within him as he waved his hand impatiently. "What are you waiting for?! Quickly have someone take her down!"
"Who dares to touch me? I am the Empress Dowager's newly adopted daughter!"
Mo Xier raised her head, her gaze coldly scanning the surroundings. She focused on sensing the changes in the flow of energy within her body, preparing for a potential fight. If it came to that, how would she shake off those people and escape with Night Star's body? She believed she could save this man; his breath still lingered.
However, beads of sweat the size of mung beans formed on her forehead, and she couldn't find even a trace of true energy within her. In the past, she would have easily sensed the powerful force radiating from her body when anger surged.
But what was happening now? She reached up to smooth a strand of hair that had fallen in front of her eyes, but it remained unchanged, her dark hair flowing like ink in the wind.
There were no signs of it turning as white as snow. Why was that? Was she not angry enough? In the past, her hair would have already turned white.
"Why aren't you capturing her for me?" The Emperor shouted sternly, yet no one dared to move. "Who dares to touch me?!" Her eyes narrowed, and a chilling aura enveloped the area, instilling fear in those around her.
"Am I the Emperor or is she? Capture her alive! Do not harm her!"
The Emperor's voice was stern yet tinged with sadness and softness. He looked at her with pleading eyes, hoping she would relent and give him a glimmer of hope, at least enough for him to save face as an Emperor.
Yet, things were always so disappointingly bleak.
In an instant, that pale yellow figure darted among the armored warriors.
His eyelashes drooped slightly, revealing a barely perceptible sadness. Mo Xier, do you really still think he is that important?
Mo Xier struggled to maneuver, trying to recall the techniques she had once used with sensitivity.
