"Miss?" A hint of confusion rose in Li Ye's eyes. Everyone in the capital knew that Night Star was someone who kept a distance from both genders. Suddenly bringing back a girl, who wouldn't be curious? "Could it be that she's someone you like?"
He didn't deny it, only remaining silent repeatedly. However, such silence was equivalent to an admission, wasn't it?
"Alright! Alright! Alright! It's just a decree; I'll give it to you! But I'm quite curious about this girl. When will you bring her into the palace? I want to see what makes her so special!"
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
Once the emperor's decree reached the general's residence, it was bound to stir up trouble. Old Madam immediately smashed the cup in her hand! Night Star's actions were undoubtedly a challenge to her authority in the general's residence!
That ungrateful child! The more he misbehaved, the less he could be controlled. Now he even dared to use the emperor to pressure her; how could she tolerate that!
After discussing military affairs with the emperor all day, by the time Night Star returned to the general's residence, it was already night. What greeted him was a brightly lit hall where Mo Xier was being punished by kneeling outside. She looked utterly dispirited, even her eyes were half-closed.
A crack appeared for the first time on her frozen expression. This foolish woman—wasn't she supposed to obediently stay in the courtyard? How did she end up here?
"Back already?" Old Madam sat calmly without holding any prayer beads this time, slowly savoring the tea in her hand as if she had been waiting for this moment.
"Son pays respects to Mother. It's so late; why aren't you resting?"
"Resting? With such a woman in the residence, how can I rest easy?" The teacup slammed heavily onto the table, her face filled with anger.
"No matter what she has done to upset you, I am here to apologize on her behalf. I hope you can overlook this and not hold it against her."
Upon hearing this, Mo Xier, who was kneeling on the ground, suddenly widened her eyes. What was going on? He didn't even ask what had happened and just came out saying she was unreasonable!
Taking advantage of the moment when no one was paying attention, she quietly reached out and pinched the man's calf, but only touched the muscle of a tentacle.
"Is compensation really useful? Rong Mama, bring it out so the young master can see what this wild woman has done!"
From behind, a bundle was taken out, and when it was spread open, it revealed the statue of Buddha that had previously been placed in the Buddha Hall, now shattered into pieces.
"I intended to go to the Buddha Hall today to chant and find some peace, but as soon as I pushed the door open, I saw this woman squatting on the ground and breaking the Buddha! Tell me! How are we supposed to compensate for this? This was blessed by a master from the Dali Temple!"
"No! I didn't do it!" Mo Xier wanted to argue loudly, but before she could finish her sentence, she was interrupted.
"Shut your mouth!" Old Madam glared angrily, looking like she would not let it go. "If it were just broken, I wouldn't be unreasonable about admitting a mistake.
But who would have thought this woman would shout at me and insist that I was wronging her! The evidence is all here; how could it be a wrongful accusation?"
Old Madam's words were all reasonable, while Mo Xier felt greatly wronged. "Hey, you old hag, how can you just speak for yourself like this?"
Old Madam trembled with anger at this remark and said with a quivering voice, "Listen to what she calls me! Does she even understand what respect for elders means?"
Night Star looked suspiciously at the person kneeling on the ground but remained silent, deep in thought.
Mo Xier had been kneeling there for quite some time. From her initial agitation at being wronged to gradually calming down, she finally sensed that something was off.
Recalling that after she woke up and got dressed, she found no one around—even Ru Er was nowhere to be seen—she began wandering aimlessly in the courtyard out of boredom.
Suddenly, a potted plant at the entrance was kicked over. She immediately chased after to check but only saw a shadow.
She was not someone who easily gave up; she followed the shadow relentlessly. After winding around several times, the shadow disappeared, and she successfully got lost in the vast General's residence.
Suddenly, a strong scent of musk wafted through the air, a smell so intense that even in modern times, I had never encountered anything like it.
Driven by curiosity, I pushed open the door to the Buddha Hall and immediately saw shattered pieces scattered all over the ground. Just as I crouched down, the Old Madam appeared as if she had fallen from the sky, insisting that I was the one who broke the statue!
Looking back now, it seems that from the moment I saw her shadow, it was all part of the Old Madam's scheme to lure me out and create this chaos!
The Old Madam fixed her sharp gaze on Night Star. "It seems you don't believe me. Rong Mama, tell her, wasn't it she who broke the statue?"
Dressed in black, Rong Mama stepped forward, her narrow eyes dark as she looked at Mo Xier and said in a low voice, "Of course it was her; I saw it clearly from the side!"
With a light laugh, Mo Xier finally understood how someone could turn white into black without batting an eye. Truly impressive! Gone was her previous grievance as she smiled seductively. "So what does the Old Madam plan to do with me?"
"A woman like you should first receive fifty lashes and then be thrown out of the General's residence to relieve my resentment!" The malicious glint in her eyes made Mo Xier shiver.
How could two people who were not related and had never interacted before be so ruthless?
"I think Mother has forgotten that His Majesty just issued an edict today allowing her to stay in the General's residence. This treatment seems rather inappropriate."
Night Star, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke up. His seemingly casual remark saved her life.
"In my opinion, it would be better to have her copy scriptures in the Buddha Hall. Mother wanted to teach her manners, right? Copying scriptures can cultivate her character and serve as punishment without violating the Imperial Decree. What do you think, Mother?"
Mo Xier shook her head repeatedly. What a joke! She had only been here for a few days; she was terrified of copying texts even in modern times. How could she manage writing with a brush in ancient times? Whether she could write at all was still a question!
However, Night Star seemed oblivious to her gestures, his indifferent expression fixed straight ahead.
The Old Madam had similar thoughts; until she clarified that girl's identity, she did not truly intend to drive Mo Xier out of the General's residence.
Night Star found a compromise that allowed Old Madam to coexist peacefully with her while keeping an eye on the woman until he could uncover her identity, preventing her from running off.
After a moment of contemplation, Old Madam seemed to reluctantly concede, "In that case, I will listen to you this once. If she misbehaves again, I will not be lenient!"
"Thank you, Mother." He bowed and pressed down on the head of the person behind him with such force that Mo Xier had no ability to resist.
Watching Old Madam leave, Mo Xier stood up reluctantly. Her knees ached from kneeling for so long, and her anger began to rise as she met his cold gaze.
"Hey! What is wrong with you? You want me to copy scriptures? Are you sending lamb meat into the tiger's mouth?"
He grabbed her wrist with surprising strength, causing her pain.
"You’re hurting me! Let go!" She struggled to break free, but the disparity in strength between them made it far from easy.
Night Star remained silent as he dragged her back to his courtyard, exuding a chilling aura. His expressionless face clearly showed his anger.
But while he was angry, Mo Xier was even angrier!
With a loud kick, she slammed the door open and then kicked it shut again. The man's movements showed no signs of stopping; with a slight force on her wrist, Mo Xier was thrown against the door frame. The impact on her shoulder was excruciating, like a bone fracture, causing her to let out a soft groan.
"You are so unreasonable! Is there anything that can't be said properly? Why do you have to treat me like this? Look, it's all red! Red!" She defiantly raised her wrist in front of him.
The red mark looked somewhat terrifying, yet it did not elicit any change in Night Star's expression.
He slammed his palm against the door, causing the weak frame to tremble as if it might collapse at any moment. The loud noise instantly silenced the noisy woman.
As their eyes met, Mo Xier's momentum weakened significantly.
Night Star The eyes that had seen countless battles were filled with lifelessness, deep as an abyss that seemed bottomless, revealing only endless darkness.
"Who allowed you to go out freely? Didn't I tell you before I left not to wander around until I returned?"
Mo Xier instantly fell silent. At that moment, she had completely forgotten the promise she made to the man, only wanting to chase after that shadow.
"That... that wasn't..." She was momentarily at a loss for words, then quickly raised her voice, "Why are you being so fierce with me? Why?"
She slightly turned her gaze away, and tears immediately filled her eyes. "Wah wah wah, I've knelt for so long, and you didn't even say a comforting word when you came back. You didn't ask me about the situation before scolding me. Are you even human?!"
Night Star was almost driven mad by this woman. Where did this ability to cry come from? He used to think women were troublesome and naturally avoided them. Now that he was truly involved, it only reinforced the fact that women were indeed troublesome!
Frowning slightly, he slowly moved a bit further away. "Stop crying!" He turned irritably and sat down in a chair, his brows furrowing even more.
Taking a couple of light sniffs, Mo Xier pitifully moved closer to him, weakly tugging at his sleeve. She recounted everything that had happened, and her tears finally stopped.
"This is obviously a trap, but how was I supposed to know at the time? I just wanted to complain to you, but I didn't expect you to be so fierce! You even made me copy that damned scripture!"
She kept rambling on and on, while Night Star's frown deepened even further!
