The almond-shaped eyes widened in fright. She didn't dare to cry anymore.
"Fengyin, are you scared?" Jinse asked, her big eyes filled with grievance. It wasn't even dark yet, and she was already starting to feel afraid.
"What?" Fengyin turned her head, completely unaware of what was happening.
Jinse's face fell; why did they have to scare her? She had been timid since she was little.
"How many rooms do you need, esteemed guests?"
"How many rooms?"
"Six rooms," Xuan Li replied.
"Five rooms! Just five!" Jinse held up five fingers and lowered her head, saying, "I... I want to sleep with Fengyin..."
"Oh?" Xuan Li smiled slightly. Why not sleep with him?
"Then it's five rooms..." Hibiscus said with a laugh, then paid the silver.
"Let's eat first; I'm hungry..." Spiritual Incense pouted.
"Spiritual Incense, you just ate..." Mel twitched his mouth.
"What? Not satisfied?" She shot an eye roll at Mel.
...
The reason Mountain Pavilion had good business and was popular among many people was largely related to its layout. Right now, Hibiscus and the others had all five of their rooms in a small, independent courtyard, which was quite peaceful.
After finishing their meal, the group returned to their rooms to put away their belongings.
People in the martial world preferred to travel light. Of course, Spiritual Incense had a bit more stuff, but that was because Mel was carrying it.
Once everyone was ready, they all came out to the courtyard to enjoy the moonlight.
Tonight, the weather is not favorable, and the full moon is hidden behind the clouds.
A few people are sitting idly in the courtyard with lamps, discussing how unexpectedly fast these tables and chairs have spread. Ever since Old Zhang and Master Mu became close friends, the Mu Family has started promoting some of Old Zhang's novel and practical inventions, which has certainly brought in profits, though they claim it is for the convenience of the common people.
The night is still young, and the partridges are calling joyfully.
"Young master, so you are all here. I have been looking for you," a woman who introduced herself as He Huan appeared quietly in the courtyard. Even a skilled person like Hibiscus did not notice her arrival, causing a frown of wariness.
"Her complexion looks off," Fengyin, being a doctor, could see through people's appearances at a glance. However, she had never encountered such a scene in her years of practice.
The woman named He Huan smiled grimly, "Accompany me to death."
Without her making a move, everyone felt as if someone had their throats gripped tightly, unable to move an inch and struggling to breathe.
He Huan slowly approached and pointed at Jinse. "You are free." Then Jinse, who regained her freedom, collapsed to the ground.
Jinse crawled to Xuan Li's feet using both hands and feet. "Xuan Li... Xuan Li..." She curled up by Xuan Li's side, frightened and crying. "Who are you?"
"Thank you for your one or two silver coins," He Huan said ethereally.
"You seduced my wife," He Huan gently squeezed Xuan Li's neck. Xuan Li furrowed her brows tightly, holding her breath to sustain her life.
"You insulted my wife, and you," He Huan waved her sleeve, causing Mel and Spiritual Incense to fly backward and crash into a pillar, losing consciousness.
"You, and you..." He Huan reached out to grab Hibiscus's neck when a pair of delicate hands caught hers.
"Possessed by a ghost," Fengyin said softly, her voice devoid of emotion.
He Huan trembled all over as a wisp of black mist emerged from her body, transforming into a pale-faced man. The man's eyes glowed green ominously; Jinse fainted at just one glance.
"Jinse." With the appearance of the Ghostly Shadow, Xuan Li and Hibiscus regained their ability to move. Xuan Li held Jinse in her arms.
Hibiscus quietly stood in front of Fengyin, fearing that this ghostly entity might harm her. Yet he did not notice that there was no trace of weakness or fear in Fengyin now.
The Ghostly Shadow completely detached from He Huan, who then slumped softly to the ground, presumably unconscious.
"Who are you?" Hibiscus's eyes glinted coldly. "Even if you are a spirit, we have no grievances with you. Why do you trouble us?"
The shadow appeared confused, drifting aimlessly in the courtyard, afraid to approach Hibiscus. It floated over to Mel, pressing down on him, causing Mel's complexion to grow increasingly pale.
A flash of white light passed by, yet the Ghostly Shadow remained unmoved atop Mel. Seeing that the sword energy could not harm it, Hibiscus furrowed her brow and flew to Mel's side, reaching out to pull him up. However, Mel felt as heavy as a thousand pounds, and the bewildered Ghostly Shadow continued to press down on him, staring blankly at Hibiscus.
"Withdraw." At some point, Fengyin had appeared behind Hibiscus. With a gentle parting of his lips, the Ghostly Shadow floated away effortlessly, revealing a pained expression on its face. Fengyin waved his sleeve, and a Gentle Breeze blew through, dispersing the dense blackness surrounding the Ghostly Shadow, leaving only a faintly visible spirit.
"Are you still stubborn?" Fengyin's ethereal voice sounded like celestial music. A white light flickered in his eyes as he gazed at the Ghostly Shadow...
In the white light, the Ghostly Shadow crawled on the ground.
"My name is A Niu. My parents passed away when I was young. Since I worked hard from an early age, I managed to cultivate a small plot of land. I am a cripple; no girl would look at me. One day while gathering firewood, I found a beautiful but foolish girl, and we got married. However, recently she poisoned me and prevented my body from being buried properly, tainting it instead. I resent... I resent..." The Ghostly Shadow spoke as the black mist around it thickened once more.
It turned out that A Niu had taken in a foolish girl years ago; they relied on each other for survival. Although she was foolish, they lived happily together. But one day, the foolish girl accidentally consumed poisonous mushrooms and died. Yet she opened her eyes again as if that poisonous mushroom had become Divine Medicine; she became neither foolish nor crazy but began to speak harshly to him. Eventually, she poisoned him to death and brought his body to the market, claiming she wanted to sell herself to bury her father. How could he not resent? How could he not hate?
In truth, A Niu's foolish Wife had long been claimed by that poisonous mushroom; what remained was He Huan who had crossed over. He Huan was determined to turn her life around in this ancient world and had read many novels about crossing over in her previous life. She believed that the most tragic and beautiful part was selling oneself to bury one's father and would inevitably encounter a charming young gentleman. Unexpectedly, she really met Xuan Li; she abandoned A Niu's corpse and followed Xuan Li away. Little did she know that A Niu's soul silently followed her and witnessed everything.
Although A Niu was timid, he felt that tonight's darkness seemed to grant him immense power; these people appeared so fragile that he could easily crush them all with a squeeze. Out of love for his Wife, he sought revenge against everyone who had bullied He Huan, starting with Mel and Spiritual Incense.
"Resentment?" Fengyin lightly waved his sleeve again; the Gentle Breeze dispersed everything. A Niu's spirit became dazed and drifted away with the wind. Fengyin's Gentle Breeze made him forget everything; he would no longer remember that he had picked up a foolish yet stunning Wife while gathering firewood. He would no longer recall her charming demeanor or any past events—everything faded into oblivion.
