I was tidying up the documents on the table when Yu Fengshu suddenly walked in and asked, "When are you free?"
I was puzzled and replied, "What’s wrong?"
His gaze fell on my stomach, and he hesitated to speak.
It took me a moment to realize what he meant, and I was somewhat shocked. "What do you mean?"
"Go have the surgery," he said.
"Are you asking for a divorce?" I questioned again.
Yu Fengshu shook his head, looking pained. "No, I just want you to terminate the pregnancy."
I looked at him in disbelief, unable to understand his thoughts.
Half a month ago, I found out I was pregnant, and I was very happy.
I told him right away, but he remained silent.
At that time, I thought he just needed time to process it, but in the following days, he always seemed to intentionally avoid me, and when I spoke to him, he appeared distracted.
"Yu Fengshu, do you really want a divorce?" I asked him.
He shook his head. "Of course not."
"Then why do you want me to terminate the pregnancy?"
He fell silent.
"Yu Fengshu, this child is conceived by a legal couple; we have the right to have him."
I took a firm stance.
He was equally resolute: "No."
Because of this matter, I moved out of our home and stayed in a hotel for a week, refusing to see him.
Yet Yu Fengshu still found me.
He looked extremely haggard, with deep-set eyes filled with red veins and stubble covering his jawline.
"Jiajia..." he began, his tone filled with helplessness and pain.
Though I was heartless, I still felt sorry for him and went back home with him.
But as soon as we entered the house, he brought up the old issue again:
"Let's go get rid of this child, shall we?"
"Yu Fengshu!" I shouted, "Are you crazy?"
He stepped forward and held me tightly in his arms, repeating,
"Jiajia, I'm sorry, we can't keep this child."
"Why?"
He didn't answer, just held me, saying sorry over and over again.
I pushed him away and looked directly into Yu Fengshu's eyes: "What is wrong with you?"
He looked at me, a hint of hesitation flashing in his eyes.
After a long pause, as if he had made up his mind, he said, "Let me take you to see someone."
"Who?"
He didn't answer, just took my hand and led me out the door.
We were both silent on the way.
I drove while he stared out the window from the moment he got in the car, his profile tense and his thin lips pressed together.
My intuition told me that he might finally reveal the secret behind why he didn't want the child.
The car stopped in front of a flower shop.
The shop was small but uniquely decorated, with a wooden sign that had "Jinshanghua" written in calligraphy, giving it an antique feel.
Inside was a woman in a long dress with long hair, slender in figure, standing with her back to us as she trimmed flower branches.
"Is that her?" I asked Yu Fengshu, pointing at the woman.
Yu Fengshu remained silent, just gazing at the woman's back with deep eyes.
I was about to get out of the car when he suddenly pulled me back.
"What's wrong?" I turned to look at him.
Yu Fengshu looked at me with complex emotions in his eyes.
He seemed to want to say something, but in the end, he just moved his lips and let go of my hand. I got out of the car and stood by the roadside, looking at the flower shop, my mind in a jumble. Yu Fengshu's reaction earlier was too strange. What did he really want to say? Why did he bring me here? Who was the woman in the flower shop? What did all this have to do with having children?
By eight in the evening, the flower shop closed, and the woman came out. I finally got a clear look at her appearance. She wore a cream-colored long dress with a light gray cardigan over it. Her hair was long and black, cascading down her back. She carried a bag and walked slowly, her silhouette lonely.
Yu Fengshu drove slowly, following the woman until he finally stopped at a park. The woman sat on a bench, staring blankly at the distant Artificial Lake. Yu Fengshu brought me to her side. She looked up and, upon seeing Yu Fengshu, her eyes brightened: "Brother Shu, what brings you here?"
Yu Fengshu gazed at her with gentle eyes: "Xiao Na, how have you been?" Zhou Na smiled and nodded: "I'm good." Yu Fengshu remained silent for a long time before saying, "I brought Jiajia to meet you."
