I couldn't understand. Later, I learned that when my dad was young, my grandfather instilled a belief in him—that he was the only male in the family and everyone should accommodate him and follow his wishes. My dad naturally believed he was the head of the household and that everyone should listen to him. 0

Thinking about this made me sneer. My dad was the only one earning money in the family. Even after I started working, he thought all my earnings were because of him. Because of this, my dad believed he was my father, the pillar of the family, and everyone should obey him. This led to a huge argument between us. No matter what I said, my dad wouldn't listen. He insisted he was right. He raised me, so I should do as he said. 0

In the end, our argument ended without resolution. My dad stormed off and never mentioned it again. As for me, I was completely disappointed in him and stopped discussing these matters with him. I just wanted to pass the civil service exam as soon as possible and take my mom away from here to settle in another city. 0

I thought I had kept my plans for the civil service exam a secret very well. However, as soon as I walked out of the examination room, I received a call from a relative: "Ning Ning, I heard you passed the civil service exam! When are you throwing a banquet? Remember to invite your cousin; arrange a good job for her." 0

I was furious at that moment. I had repeatedly warned them not to tell anyone about it until it was certain. I went home and found my grandfather: "Why did you do this?" 0

"What did I do?" My grandfather sat on the sofa, looking confused. 0

"Why did you tell others about my plans to take the civil service exam?" 0

"Isn't this something everyone knows?" 0
Grandpa looked innocent. "I thought you wanted everyone to know to show off." 0
"When they asked me, I just told them." 0
As he spoke, Grandpa wore a proud expression. "So, how about it, Ning Ning? Grandpa is impressive, right?" 0
I trembled all over. 0
I didn't even know what to say. 0
I turned and went upstairs. 0
Behind me, I heard Grandpa's smug voice: "See, I was right. Ning Ning is just embarrassed by us and doesn't want anyone to know we are her family." 0
"Can you believe it? This child can be like this. We are her closest people, yet she looks down on us." 0
"If it weren't for us, does she think she could have grown up this big?" 0
"If I had known it would be like this, I should have suffocated her when she was born." 0
I bit my lip hard to keep myself from crying out loud. 0
I told myself not to cry. 0
If I cried, it would be exactly what they wanted. 0
They wanted to see me in distress. 0
I couldn't give them that satisfaction. 0
"After I went upstairs, my mom also came up. 0
She grabbed my hand and said, 'Ning Ning, don't listen to your grandpa. He's just confused and doesn't know right from wrong; ignore him.'" 0
I nodded. "Mom, I understand." 0
Though I said that, deep down I knew this matter wouldn't pass so easily. 0
Sure enough, the next day, all those relatives came knocking on the door. 0
One by one, they grabbed my hands and tried to get close to me: "Ning Ning is a big official now; don't forget us relatives in the future." 0
"Exactly! Ning Ning, you're a civil servant now. I've heard that job is a secure one; you won't have to worry anymore." 0

"Ning Ning, your cousin is graduating this year. Can you help her arrange a good job?" 0
"Ning Ning..." 0
Their back-and-forth conversation was giving me a headache. 0
I turned to look at Grandpa, hoping he could help explain the situation. 0
To my surprise, Grandpa was sitting on the sofa, looking quite pleased with himself. 0
He seemed to be certain that I could help them solve their problem. 0
