Looking at the greedy Corpse Demons reaching out to me with their claws, I closed my eyes, prepared for the shattering of my body. My consciousness had already begun to blur, the cries of countless demons filled the air, and I could not distinguish whose voice it was; only silence remained in my ears. So this is where it ends, a kind of relief. I'm so tired; I just want to rest...
In that moment of falling, I did not feel the imagined pain; instead, it felt like landing on a soft sponge, lying steadily on top.
Slowly opening my eyes... whose robe is this? It shields me from the attacks of the myriad demons.
"Xi Meng, the game is not over yet; I won't allow you to die so easily." Through the haze, I heard a voice coming from afar. I turned to look—it's Kurozawa.
Why? The three words lingered on my lips but never escaped.
As we passed through the throng of demons, our eyes met. Time seemed to rewind to that moment when I first saw those eyes—helpless and desolate.
At that moment, I had never seen such a pair of eyes, clean yet filled only with sorrow.
"Grandma, Grandma, come save Little Bird!" The little girl suddenly shouted sharply, waking me from my daze. At that moment, she was tightly coiled by a snake tail, lifted into the air, quite safe.
"Bold Monster! How dare you harm a descendant of the Witch Clan?!" A powerful elderly voice exclaimed.
The newcomer appeared to be around fifty or sixty years old, with neat black short hair. She wore a tattered cloth bag on her back, similar to that of the little girl but slightly larger.
It was easy to guess that this must be the little girl's grandmother.
My heart tightened again; it seemed this matter would drag another innocent into it. What should I do?!
"I told you not to come out alone at night; you didn't listen," Little Bird's grandmother said in a surprisingly relaxed tone.
Could she not see the situation before her? She was scolding her granddaughter instead.
"Grandma, Little Bird was wrong, Little Bird won't dare again!" the little girl cried anxiously, clearly frightened by what had happened tonight.
"Another one seeking death, old fool," Kurozawa scoffed coldly.
"My Witch Clan has never held grudges against the outside world. I ask Your Excellency to spare the granddaughter of Old Man."
"A mere human dares to plead with me, utterly ignorant of her situation. Hmph, that little thing has angered me; do you think she can leave alive?"
"Then I apologize, Old Man. The ancestors bear witness; though I break clan rules today, it is truly out of necessity," the old man sighed.
He took out a Poison Doll from his cloth bag. It was palm-sized and looked much better than the few Poison Dolls I had seen before. Moreover, it had a serious expression.
"You think you can break my Ten Thousand Demon Formation with such a pathetic doll?! Hahaha, that's simply laughable!"
"Poison Doll Cloning Technique," the old man murmured without responding. Instantly, the Poison Doll multiplied into dozens, surrounding the old man in a circle.
Unfortunately, these dozens of Poison Dolls appeared exceedingly insignificant among the myriad of demons and were hardly worth mentioning.
"Curse, soul exchange."
"Useless, useless! These Corpse Demons have no souls; you can't control them at all. Hahahaha, don't waste your effort; just die!"
Indeed, the Corpse Demons obeyed the Undead King, who was controlled by the Demon Lord, rendering them ineffective. It seemed the old man had miscalculated.
"Is that so?" A sly smile appeared on the old man's lips.
Could it be that there was a twist in this situation?
Suddenly, his body felt light as if being drawn somewhere, and he lost consciousness immediately.
“Miss, you are awake.” As I slowly opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was the concerned expression of Shi.
Then I noticed a very unfamiliar room, furnished with a few simple old wooden pieces, lacking any modern touches.
“...Shi, where are we?” I remembered being surrounded by countless demons just moments ago; how did we escape?
“Yes, it’s Little Bird,” I said with a smile. I felt relieved; it seemed everyone was safe.
“Little Bird should come down and let the guests rest well.” It was then that I noticed the elderly woman standing to the side.
“Grandma, hello. I am Xi Meng. Thank you for your help earlier.” It seemed I could roughly guess how things had unfolded.
“It is I who should thank you for protecting my granddaughter,” the elderly woman said.
“You're too kind, Grandma. I still have a long way to go.” Thinking back to the life-and-death situation we had just faced, I couldn't help but smile bitterly.
“Haha, Little Bird’s grandma is the strongest! Little Bird should be like grandma in the future!” The little girl laughed, holding onto the ‘Pichino’ Poison Doll, shaking it back and forth.
“I didn’t expect this Poison Doll to have such power,” I remarked.
“That Monster is indeed quite formidable. If he hadn’t been careless, I wouldn’t have been able to switch things so smoothly,” the elderly woman frowned. “It seems that chaos is beginning to stir in the human realm.”
“Grandma has noticed as well?” I asked cautiously.
“Though there are often many ghosts and monsters around, they are usually insignificant characters, and we can coexist peacefully for now. My Witch Clan has always been skilled in divination; I’ve cast an omen, and it seems trouble is brewing in the human realm.”
“...It seems your words may come true,” I sighed.
"The Witch Clan has never participated in these disputes. If that day truly comes, I will have no choice but to take Little Bird and find a place to settle down," the old woman said, shaking her head.
"Grandma, can you really hide?" I understood her intention; she wanted to avoid this matter at all costs.
"Child, there are very few descendants left of the Witch Clan. Little Bird is the last of her line; I cannot take the risk."
I fell silent. This journey was fraught with danger, and it made sense to seek refuge.
"Shunzi, come here," Little Bird suddenly said.
Who is Shunzi?
I looked up and saw a large black-furred Squirrel, much bigger than an ordinary Squirrel, with a bit more spirit, its round eyes darting around.
However, the collar around its neck looked familiar; I seemed to have seen it somewhere before.
...
Oh, I remembered!
When I was Undead, I encountered a beggar Squirrel in the Necromancer's Cave. It had passed something to me... asking me to find its owner and return it to her.
I slowly took out the collar from my belongings and examined it closely; it was almost identical.
"Shunzi, did you find it?" Little Bird spoke to the Squirrel.
The Squirrel nodded in response, wagging its fluffy tail.
"Put it here." Did someone just arrive?
"Big Sister, are you awake?" The little girl jumped onto the bed, her big eyes looking at me as she asked. The bird ran to the side and took out a small jar.
The Squirrel spat something out of its mouth, and it turned out to be a poisonous insect that resembled a centipede, with vibrant alternating red and green colors. Just looking at it, one could tell it was extremely toxic.
"Grandma, now the Gu Worm is almost ready!" Little Bird said with a smile.
It turned out this insect was an ingredient for making the Gu Worm; it was truly disgusting. I never expected that the Witch Clan was skilled in using such methods.
"Grandma, look at this." I withdrew my gaze and handed the collar of Huazi to the old woman.
Grandma was taken aback, her eyes instantly reddening as large tears streamed down her face, yet she bit her lip to suppress any sound.
She turned away and remained silent for a long time.
...
"It seems that Huazi is no longer with us," the old woman sighed.
"We met in the Necromancer's Cave; surely Huazi must have gone through many hardships to be reborn..." Slowly, amidst the sorrowful atmosphere, I began to recount stories about Huazi.
"Alas, it suffered for me. It truly fought hard for that promise," the old woman turned around, a faint, powerless smile appearing at the corner of her mouth.
Indeed, it fought hard. The Necromancer's Cave is a terrifying place that endlessly devours your soul in its solitude and chaos.
"Huazi is my Guardian Beast; we grew up together since childhood. We are more than just family; it is a part of my body, just as I am a part of it. Throughout our journey, we saved each other from danger, inseparable; neither of us could leave the other."
"Unfortunately, it died to save me. That collar you gave me earlier is not an ordinary one; it has the power to bind souls. Unless one truly disappears from all realms, it cannot be removed... I thought that in my lifetime I would still be able to see Huazi again, even if only as a spirit."
Meanwhile, Little Bird seemed oblivious to everything and was happily playing with the Squirrel named Shunzi. Little Bird was still young and didn't understand many things; however, she was fortunate to have Shunzi by her side as she grew up. Sometimes, the love brought by animals is far lighter and cleaner than that of humans.
I think I can understand that feeling of a deep connection.
“Little Bird—she is luckier than I am,” Grandma said, looking at the playful Little Bird with a sense of satisfaction.
“Grandma, if we continue to be so passive, will we really be able to protect the ones we care about in the end?”
“Little girl, Grandma is old and cannot do anything significant… Little Bird is still young.” The elderly woman seemed conflicted and finally sighed, “But I promise you, if that day truly comes, you can always come to me for help. I will do my utmost to repay you for your kindness.”
“Grandma, I understand what you mean. I don’t want to get too involved either, but if it comes to the point where we need each other’s help, please lend a hand. We all want to protect our home and our people. After all, all extraordinary abilities are secondary; we shouldn’t squander them.”
“Alright, Grandma agrees.”
“It’s getting late; we should take our leave… Thank you again for today.”
“Little girl, take this. You need to clear the demonic energy from your body in time; otherwise, it could lead to endless troubles. Also, Grandma always remembers one thing: as long as you’re alive, there is hope.” The old woman handed me a Small Porcelain Bottle.
……
The sky was about to brighten.
As my soul returned to my body, I suddenly sat up in bed and spat out a mouthful of fresh blood.
“Miss!” The three of them looked extremely worried as they stood nearby.
“I’m fine; it’s just some stagnant blood.”
I took out the Small Porcelain Bottle, revealing a red pill lying in my hand.
“Miss?” The one named Shi looked at the pill with difficulty, clearly uneasy about it.
"At this point, there's no other way but to give it a try," I said with a smile. "Don't worry so much; we have no grievances between us. How could she harm me?"
With that, I swallowed the pill in one go.
"Are you feeling any better?" Shi asked nervously.
"Not that quickly. Alright, you all should go rest. You've all been hurt tonight."
Seeing that I seemed fine, Shi hesitated before nodding.
"Miss, don't trust too easily," Sha said with a frown before leaving.
"Miss, please rest," Dong said stiffly as he handed me a piece of clothing.
"Okay, you all can go."
With that, the three of them disappeared.
"Pfft!" Another mouthful of blood!
My stomach hurt intensely, as if something was twisting my insides.
