When I was young, I grew up by my grandmother's side. Whenever I was scared, she would hold me and gently pat me to sleep. Although I was very small at that time, I was old enough to remember. The only person in my family who knew about my ability to see otherworldly beings was my grandmother. She would always smile and say to me, "Don't be afraid; this means my Little Dreamer is different from other children." Later, when my grandmother passed away, I was taken to live with my parents. Due to their busy work schedules, I started living alone at home from a very young age.
Ever since that strange dream I had one night, I became increasingly sensitive. Before dawn, I turned on all the lights and hid under the covers, starting to count.
When I reached 478, all the sounds suddenly disappeared, and everything went dark. I lifted the blanket and found my phone using the light from outside. My hands trembled uncontrollably; now was not the time...
Sure enough, amidst the good and bad, I felt a hand patting me on the back, so scared that I didn't dare to breathe. What should I do? Play dead? No, no, I slowly turned my head mechanically. Oddly enough, I saw nothing.
Another pat on my head made me jerk my head up again, but still nothing. I tried to calm myself and said, "Stop messing around; I'm a Dream Soul Master." In truth, I was terrified of this unknown entity.
After waiting for a long time without seeing anything, why was this happening? Although I could usually see some strange things, they had never touched me before; at most, they would make eye contact with me a few times before leaving. Just as I was thinking about this, laughter echoed around me, and I looked up.
Oh my God, what kind of person is this? No, he must not be human. With silver hair and silver eyes that sparkled like a cat's gaze, his skin was so white it seemed almost transparent. He had a high nose and slightly pale lips, with long pointed ears. His dark blue robe embroidered with golden flowers trailed down to the ground like those legendary enchanting fairies that took my breath away. Yet, he did not exude an overly cold aura.
"Are you a fairy?" I involuntarily asked.
He smiled and walked in front of me, bending slightly as he looked at me and said, "My name is Qiu. From today onward, I am your Guardian Deity." A strange feeling settled in my heart that wouldn't calm down; all I knew was that I would trust him.
The night view seemed particularly beautiful tonight as light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Everything felt so dreamlike. Looking at him in front of me who seemed unreal, I quietly asked, "Did my great-grandfather send you to protect me?"
"No," he replied. "I have been contracted with your family for generations. I am immortal and will guard the Xi Family's Dream Soul Master for generations to come. And you must fulfill your mission as well." He straightened up and walked toward the window.
I could roughly understand what Qiu meant, and I cautiously spoke up, fearing to disrupt the ethereal beauty surrounding him. He always answered patiently until I asked about the one who could unlock the Eye of Heaven, the Ancestor. A different expression appeared on Qiu's face, something akin to admiration or longing. This deity, who seemed to exude a faint sadness, had a moment of warmth in his eyes. "You will know when the time comes."
He didn't want to say more, so I didn't press further. I always felt as if he was trapped by something, unable to move forward or retreat.
"If there's nothing you need, I will stay in your Necklace until you find the next heir. I will always be by your side." The silence was broken by Qiu. After hearing this, my restless heart calmed significantly; at least I had Qiu.
Although I had many questions for him, I decided to take my time; he didn't seem to like me very much.
In the days that followed, Qiu told me to stop sleeping with the lights on, saying that as a Dream Soul Master, I shouldn't be so timid. It wouldn't do to be afraid of the dark while moving around at night. Although it was uncomfortable at first and I often woke up, touching the Necklace brought me some comfort. Thus began our time together; he guided me every day.
Ghosts are both familiar and strange to us humans. What exactly is a ghost? Different people always have different interpretations of these supernatural beings.
Qiu said, "Ghosts are formed from people after they die because they cannot reincarnate or refuse rebirth. But ghosts are not only created from human deaths; in the underworld, ghosts are also a type of being. That kind of power is not something one gains merely by dying; they are a powerful existence. This world is divided into three realms: the Divine Realm, the Underworld, and the Human Realm. The so-called Hell or Underworld acts like a bridge, a passage connecting the three realms. There are also demons, which are not part of the Human Realm either; they are formed from animals that have lived for over five hundred years after death. They are similar to ghosts and enjoy preying on humans. Only species that live for five hundred years in the Human Realm can become demons and qualify to enter the Underworld. In the Underworld, everything starts anew; constant cultivation is required to become strong. After all, this method is not easy, which is why the number of demon clans is far less than that of the Demon Clan."
"So, are there other races in the Underworld?" I asked absentmindedly since such matters were usually only heard in mythological stories.
Qiu furrowed his brow slightly, his expression complex as he hesitated to speak. After a long while, he squinted at me and said, "Yes, there are also the Demon Race."
"Why didn't you say anything? Is the Demon Race frightening?" My intuition suggested there was something more.
"You don't need to worry about them; for tens of thousands of years, the Demon Race has remained very peaceful. They have been completely closed off in the Underworld and never step outside their territory."
I stared at Qiu for a while; I couldn't find anything unusual on his face, but I still sensed that something was off. It is always calm before a storm; I didn't believe that the Demon Race would withdraw from conflicts without reason. However, I hesitated and chose not to voice my thoughts. After all, I was just a human and did not understand much about the Underworld.
"Of course, they have a lifespan much longer than humans, about two thousand years, with only a few top-tier strong individuals achieving immortality. Like humans, their lives are divided into different stages: the first five hundred years are considered youth, the next thousand years are the maturity phase, and the final five hundred years mark the end of life. This can be determined by their right ear; a red gemstone represents youth, while a blue gemstone signifies maturity. The colors can vary from light to medium to dark, and once the gemstones disappear, they enter the final phase. You will learn more about this later," the prisoner began to explain slowly.
In my half-dazed state, my ordinary life began to ripple, growing larger and larger.
