"I," with the sound, Yingzi sat down heavily on the ground, gasping for breath.
Fei Hu walked over and asked softly, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, but we can't stay here long. We need to leave immediately. I took out the dogs they brought and led them to the right mountain, but I estimate they will realize they've been tricked soon and will come after us at full speed," Yingzi said as she stood up and started walking forward again.
After resting for a while, Ye Xiaofei felt much better than before. She grabbed Fei Hu's hand and followed closely behind him. The three of them climbed toward a higher peak. In the silent forest, they hurried along without speaking, only the sound of rustling footsteps could be heard.
They walked for another hour or two until Ye Xiaofei sat down on the ground, unable to get back up. Yingzi finally stopped. At this moment, a red hue appeared in the eastern sky, and the dawn forest began to fill with birdsong. Fei Hu tugged at his clothes, damp with dew, and chuckled softly, "With dew outside and sweat inside, I'm almost like a water bucket."
"Hmph, you still have sweat to spare; I've run out of it," Ye Xiaofei grumbled as she sat on the ground.
Yingzi looked at the towering mountain ahead and said, "We must climb to the top of this mountain before resting. Otherwise, when it gets light, it will be easy for us to be exposed while climbing." After saying this, she walked over and took the backpack off Fei Hu's back, making it clear that he should carry Ye Xiaofei up the mountain.
Upon hearing this, Ye Xiaofei hurriedly stood up. Breathing heavily, she said, "Don't carry me; this high mountain is hard enough for anyone to climb. Just pull me along; I can hold on a bit longer—if worse comes to worst, I'll just tire myself out." With that, she extended her hand.
In this situation, Fei Hu didn't dare to show off either. He took Ye Xiaofei's hand and followed closely behind Yingzi. In this forest, there was no path at all, making it very difficult to walk. Fortunately, Yingzi was leading the way; Fei Hu just had to follow her.
When the sun peeked out halfway above the horizon, the three finally reached the summit. This mountaintop was peculiar—barren with not a single blade of grass growing on it—and quite large, about the size of two basketball courts. Moreover, it was one of the taller peaks among several surrounding mountains. A soft snoring sound came from behind him. Turning around, he saw both women lying on a large rock asleep. Seeing them sleeping made Fei Hu feel drowsy as well; he lay down too. The fatigue from a night of travel hit him suddenly, and he fell asleep.
The scorching sun rose higher and higher, but these three slept like dead pigs. Just then, from within the thicket emerged a Large Flowered Snake about as thick as an arm. It raised its head and cautiously looked around; perhaps attracted by the scent of humans, it quickly slithered over and directly climbed onto Ye Xiaofei's bare calf.
Ye Xiaofei jolted awake as if she had been electrocuted. When she saw the Large Flowered Snake beside her, she screamed frantically and scrambled toward the sleeping Fei Hu. Both Fei Hu and Yingzi were startled awake by Ye Xiaofei's shout. When Yingzi spotted the Large Flowered Snake not far from her, she quickly grabbed a stick nearby and swung it at the snake's neck. With a thud, the Large Flowered Snake was knocked two or three yards away to the treetops, not moving again.
Startled by the encounter, the three of them lost all desire to sleep. As Fei Hu stood up, he realized his face felt as hot as fire. Yingzi hurriedly said, "Quick, let's hide under the big tree; we could get sunburned out here."
They chose the largest tree and squeezed together underneath it. Ye Xiaofei nervously glanced around the grass, while Yingzi smiled and waved her stick, striking it against the ground as she said, "Don't be afraid; if another snake comes out, I'll make it climb a tree too." Hearing this, Ye Xiaofei chuckled lightly.
Fei Hu opened his backpack and found some food. The three of them began to eat ravenously. With only two bottles of water among them, they barely managed to drink before one bottle was tipped upside down. Fei Hu sighed and said, "What do we do? We have no idea where we are; are we going to die in a foreign land?"
"Foreign land? Which country is this?" Ye Xiaofei asked, clutching Fei Hu's arm tightly. At that moment, she didn't care about anything else; she wanted to love boldly, even if just for a fleeting moment.
Yingzi let out a breath and said, "This place is temporarily safe, but if we can't find a way out, it will still lead to our demise." After saying this, Yingzi rummaged through her backpack and pulled out two shoe soles she had retrieved last night. Fei Hu looked at them in frustration; he couldn't understand what use these soles could possibly have—could they eat or drink?
Seeing Fei Hu's displeasure, Yingzi smiled and said, "A miracle is about to happen."
Yingzi examined the shoe soles before twisting the heel with her hand. To her surprise, the heel was threaded inside and came off easily after a couple of twists. She pinched it between her fingers and pulled out a small blade from inside. Fei Hu found this intriguing and leaned closer to watch.
Yingzi held the blade between her fingers and gently traced it along the edge of the shoe sole before splitting it in half with her hands. Fei Hu was dumbfounded; no wonder Yingzi had insisted on finding those shoe soles—they contained layers filled with various electronic components and possibly circuit boards.
This was promising. Fei Hu moved closer to watch Yingzi's every move in silence. This woman was incredible; she assembled those small components into a compact transmitter. Seeing this made Fei Hu understand why Yingzi had been so determined to find those shoe soles and why she had climbed up the highest mountain.
Yingzi aligned the four separated shoe soles together and connected them with a thin copper wire before placing them under sunlight. At this point, Ye Xiaofei understood what was happening and asked with a smile, "Yingzi, is that a solar panel you're using to generate electricity?"
Yingzi nodded and connected the copper wire to the small transmitter. The device beeped once and lit up with a blinking light. Wiping her sweat away, Yingzi closed her eyes for a moment before starting to poke at a small button on the transmitter with a thin wire. The beeping sound continued for over an hour.
It wasn't until the green light on the transmitter lit up that Yingzi finally stopped. She wiped her forehead and said, "We have hope of getting out of here, but it's no longer safe because once this signal is sent out, they will be able to track us down quickly." As she spoke, Yingzi removed the copper wire connected to the transmitter.
Fei Hu glanced at the clock and noticed it was already past two o'clock. Time had passed too quickly, and he couldn't help but ask Yingzi, "Who are you? How do you know all this? It's a bit unbelievable."
"There's no point in discussing this now. We need to be ready for battle at any moment. I can tell you that because of your mercy last night, the three of us almost met our end. When they catch up to us, if you make the same old mistake again, I won't go easy on you. Each one of them is more ruthless than the last. If we fall into their hands this time, they will torture us to death," Yingzi replied.
Fei Hu lowered his head in regret and said softly, "I know what I need to do now."
Ye Xiaofei glanced at the somewhat serious Yingzi and asked quietly, "You just said we could leave. How do we get out? Do we still have to run?" As she spoke, she rubbed her foot, which was swollen like a bun. Seeing her in pain made Fei Hu's heart ache, but he had no way to help.
"No need to run. We just need to hold this place. A plane will come to rescue us. The other mountains have too many trees; a plane can't land there," Yingzi said as she began checking her gun.
Fei Hu realized he had underestimated this woman, but there was no time to analyze her now; he would deal with it when they returned home—he would definitely scold her.
Fei Hu checked his magazine and found only five bullets left. His expression darkened. Yingzi counted her own magazine and said, "I'm doing a bit better with fifteen rounds. Sister Xiaofei probably has the most—at least twenty rounds. If we can make every shot count, these bullets should be enough for them."
"I can't do that. Here’s what we'll do: I'll give all my bullets to you guys. Use them wisely; you can take this gun too," Ye Xiaofei said as she handed her short gun to Yingzi.
Yingzi took the gun and nodded, saying, "This works too. If a plane flies by here, shoot at it to draw it towards us." As she spoke, she picked up the shoe sole she had torn apart and used a blade to scratch its surface, peeling off a layer of black material to reveal something shiny underneath that looked like a mirror.
Ye Xiaofei happily took it and was about to try it out when Yingzi's expression changed suddenly as she shouted, "Stop! If you shine that light around, they'll immediately know we're here. Do you want to live?" Yingzi's tone was stern, causing Ye Xiaofei to retract her hand in fright.
At that moment, the distant sound of an airplane roared through the air. Upon hearing it, Yingzi immediately stood up and said quietly, "Sister Xiaofei, when you see the plane, shoot at it. Fei Hu and I will hold them off on the ridge." Yingzi was as cold as ice, and Fei Hu felt a chill run down his spine. Even though a plane was coming to rescue them, he couldn't imagine the consequences if they were ambushed. He glanced at Ye Xiaofei; her face looked just as grim.
