Fei Hu and Ye Cheng had been discussing for a long time, from the afternoon until late at night. The three of them finally reached a consensus, and Fei Hu hurried back to Shanghang overnight.
After a night of rushing, which was both exhausting and mentally draining, Fei Hu was sleeping soundly when he suddenly felt his nose blocked. He opened his eyes to see Xiao Lan standing at the foot of his bed with a smile, one hand pinching his nose.
Seeing that Fei Hu was awake, Xiao Lan released her grip and teased, "Come on, honestly tell me what you were up to last night. You slept like a pig and didn't even check the time." As she spoke, she naturally sat down in the chair by Fei Hu's bed.
Rubbing his sleepy eyes, Fei Hu looked up at the clock on the wall. Oh my, it was already eleven in the morning! He quickly got up, dressing as he smiled at Xiao Lan, "Hey, what are you doing in a sleeping man's room? Aren't you afraid of what others might say?"
"You're so full of yourself. If it weren't for Tang Zong asking me to come wake you up, I wouldn't have bothered," Xiao Lan replied, rolling her eyes at Fei Hu before turning her face away since he was getting dressed.
Summer clothes were few, and Fei Hu quickly got ready. While washing up in the bathroom, he asked Xiao Lan, "Didn't you say you would be out for three or four days? Why are you back so soon? Did something happen?"
Xiao Lan sneered and said, "What? Did we come back too early and interrupt your good time? If that's the case, you should have told me earlier; I could have figured out a way to keep Tang Zong away for another day or two." Her strange expression left Fei Hu puzzled.
"What are you talking about? Whether you come back or not doesn't affect me much. It's not like my freedom is controlled by you," Fei Hu said, deliberately making a funny face at Xiao Lan.
Xiao Lan gave Fei Hu a thumbs-up and said, "Impressive! You're really just like Tang Zong said—a heartbreaker. Let me tell you the truth: without you around this time, things were really not enjoyable. So Tang Zong decided to head back in frustration, saying next time he goes out, he must bring you along. I wonder if you'll have another chance to be charming."
The two laughed as they went downstairs. Tang Lan was sitting on the sofa in the living room reading a newspaper. As she read, she suddenly exclaimed, "Oh my gosh! That's terrifying! We're so lucky we didn't take that train!"
"What happened, Tang Zong?" Xiao Lan asked in surprise.
Tang Lan adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses and said with a trembling voice, "Yesterday you mentioned taking the train from Nangang to Shanghang, right? Good thing I didn't go along; otherwise, we might have ended up in another world."
Fei Hu picked up a teacup from the coffee table and asked in surprise, "What is Tang Zong talking about? I don't understand at all."
"Two trains collided, and no one survived in the front section," Tang Lan said, raising the newspaper in her hand with a slight gasp.
Fei Hu's heart sank at the news. Chen Hui and Wang Yun were on a train last night, and he wondered if it was the same train they were working on. As this thought crossed his mind, he stepped forward and snatched the newspaper from Tang Lan's hands. Trembling, he slowly read the bold headline: "T85 from Shanghang to Nangang collided with a freight train that had just started moving at Nangang Station, resulting in significant casualties; no one in the sleeper car escaped unharmed."
T85—wasn't Wang Yun on that train last night? Fei Hu clearly remembered Wang Yun telling him she would be on that sleeper car for duty. Oh my God, Fei Hu felt dizzy; his hand went limp, and the teacup he was holding fell to the floor with a crash, shattering into pieces.
Xiao Lan quickly stepped forward to support Fei Hu. She hesitantly asked, "What's wrong? Do you have a family member on that train?" Tang Lan also realized the severity of the situation and signaled for Xiao Lan to help Fei Hu sit down on the sofa.
The atmosphere in the living room was extremely tense. Fei Hu felt as if the world was spinning. How could this be possible? Just yesterday they were together, and now this was the outcome—it was simply unbearable. He closed his eyes tightly, leaning quietly against the sofa without saying a word. The housekeeper, who had come in to ask if it was time for dinner, saw the scene and quietly retreated in fear.
"Don't panic, Fei Hu," Tang Lan said softly. "Make a call; maybe your friends are fine. Just stay calm. Besides, this is just a report; reports can be inaccurate—you know that."
Fei Hu took a deep breath to steady his emotions before pulling out his phone.
His hands shook as he found Wang Yun's number. Things weren't going as hoped; each time he dialed, he heard, "The number you have dialed cannot be connected." Once, twice—he called five times in total, and each time it was the same.
Xiao Lan gently reminded him, "Why not ask someone else? Who else might know her situation?"
Her words made Fei Hu shudder. He thought of Chen Hui; she should know about Wang Yun's situation since they were in the same system. With that thought in mind, he quickly searched for Chen Hui's number and dialed it. The call connected quickly, but before Fei Hu could speak, he heard Chen Hui's sobbing voice on the other end: "Fei Hu, you don't need to doubt it; it's true—Wang Yun has indeed had an accident. She was in the sleeper car on last night's train... she's gone..." The call ended abruptly, and tears streamed down Fei Hu's face.
This was the first time Fei Hu cried publicly. He couldn't believe how fragile life could be—just yesterday they were laughing together, but today she had vanished without a word. What could possibly cause this? Fei Hu had never experienced such loss before; Wang Yun's sudden departure left him—a strong man—at a complete loss.
Tang Lan and Xiao Lan both remained silent; they didn't know what kind of relationship Fei Hu had with the person who had been involved in the accident, so they didn't know how to comfort him. The atmosphere in the hall became unbearably heavy.
Suddenly, Fei Hu's phone rang at an inappropriate moment. Annoyed, he glanced at it and saw an unfamiliar number—one from Shanghang. He angrily pressed the hang-up button and fell back into painful memories. The phone rang again; it was still that same number. He hung up once more, but the caller persisted and dialed again.
Seeing this repeated attempt infuriated him further. When he finally answered the call, he shouted into the receiver, "Are you trying to die? Why are you calling me?"
The phone paused for a moment, and a woman's voice came through: "Hello, Fei Hu, this is Li Xiaoran, Wang Yun's classmate."
Fei Hu realized that Wang Yun had a classmate, Li Xiaoran. He felt a bit embarrassed and said, "I'm sorry, I was reading the newspaper, so my emotions got a bit out of control."
"It's okay. You can hit me; I understand. This is just too hard to accept. I wanted to ask if you have some time. Why don't we go to Wang Yun's house together to pay our respects? I'm not sure if it's convenient for you," Li Xiaoran cautiously asked Fei Hu.
That was not a problem. Fei Hu paused for a moment and said, "Sure, we can go together. I just don't know when her family will hold the ceremony. We need to find out which day is suitable; otherwise, going separately wouldn't be appropriate." Fei Hu slowly began to accept this reality and started to worry about Wang Yun's family.
"You are very considerate. Let me find out and I'll call you back," Li Xiaoran said in a low voice, clearly very sad.
After hanging up the phone, Fei Hu let out a sigh and said to Tang Lan and Xiao Lan, "I'm sorry my emotions affected you. There was indeed a friend of mine on this train; she happened to be one of the sleeping car attendants. It's such bad luck."
Tang Lan stood up and walked over to Fei Hu. She gently patted his shoulder and said, "Take care; this is fate, something we can't control. Although your friend has passed away, she would be happy knowing that you care so much for her."
Since the situation was as it was, acceptance was necessary—whether one liked it or not. There was truly nothing one could do about such matters. Fei Hu glanced at the clock on the wall; it pointed to one o'clock. He hurriedly called out to the cook in the kitchen, "Sister, it's time to eat." After calling out, he glanced at Tang Lan with some embarrassment; she usually ate on time, but today was indeed an exception.
Since it was already more than an hour past mealtime, it was unclear whether Fei Hu was really hungry or just feeling down. He ate as if he were mad, consuming several bowls of rice in quick succession. Xiao Lan couldn't bear to watch any longer; she snatched the bowl from Fei Hu's hands and angrily said, "Are you even a man? A man should act like one! In life, everyone goes through such things; it's just a matter of when. Can't you understand that?"
Xiao Lan's words struck heavily on Fei Hu's heart. He realized he couldn't continue like this; he needed to pull himself together and show some strength as a man. Otherwise, he truly didn't deserve the title of 'man.' Although saying it was easy, doing it was not so simple. Thus, Fei Hu's emotions fluctuated between good and bad. Fortunately, Tang Lan and Xiao Lan were very patient; they stayed by his side and offered comforting words.
Around three o'clock in the afternoon, Fei Hu's phone rang again. He frowned slightly and looked at his phone with displeasure. Seeing that it was Chen Hui calling, he answered it. On the other end of the line, Chen Hui spoke hoarsely: "The memorial service for Wang Yun is the day after tomorrow; you should come." After saying that, the call ended abruptly.
